An achingly funny story from the author of the bestselling YOU HAD ME AT HELLO

What’s the one thing you do at a wedding? Kiss your groom. What’s the one thing you DON’T do at a wedding? Kiss someone else’s groom.

When Edie is caught in a compromising position at her colleagues’ wedding, all the blame falls on her – turns out that personal popularity in the office is not that different from your schooldays. Ostracised by everyone she knows, shamed online, her boss suggests an extended sabbatical. He has the perfect project to fill it – ghostwriting an autobiography for hot new acting talent, Elliot Owen. All she has to do is keep her head down and get on with the star. Easy, right?

Wrong. Banished back to her home town of Nottingham, Edie is not only dealing with a celebrity megabrat of epic proportions but also facing the ghosts of her past as she moves back in with her widowed father and layabout sister. As she questions the woman she has become, Edie realises that turning to look at her past is not just painful – it could potentially change her future.

funny, poignant, and oh so good!
By Jo Blogs
I love Mhairi's writing, and this one was no exception. It was book full of well developed characters, impeccable writing, and real life situations, and I didn't want it to end. In fact when it did end, I found myself staring at the final page in the book, flipping it back and forth looking for more words. I was screaming NOOOO! I NEED MORE! (in my head, because it was nearly 1am and I didn't want to wake the kids!)

I really empathised with Edie, who suddenly found herself the villain of the show, and became a pariah that no one would speak to. No one, except for her gay BFF at work, (who really wasn't a BFF, he was as fake as my designer handbag picked up at a market in Greece.) He had more faces than the town clock, but I thought he was also hilarious. I kind of pictured him like 'Kenneth from Benidorm' (the TV show) and could just imagine him keeping the office up to date with all the goings on.
Yes, she had been caught in a compromising position with the groom, on his wedding day, but it really wasn't her fault. It didn't matter though, she had been tried, convicted, and then hung out to dry. She couldn't possibly go back to work after that, because the bride and groom worked in the same office. Luckily for her, her boss gives her some breathing space and sends her back to her home town of Nottingham to ghost write the autobiography of an up & coming actor - a local boy done good.
I loved the adventures of Edie in Nottingham, her resentful sister, her dad with his head buried in the sand, her eccentric neighbour Margot, her 2 oldest friends from school, and of course, Elliot Owen - the actor she is forced to work with.
This was a humorous, and sometimes poignant look at how much influence social media has these days. Edie is the subject of cyber bullying, and an internet hate campaign, she becomes infamous and complete strangers know who she is. Edie handles it all with grace and tries to ignore it as much as possible.

I loved Elliot, he came across as rude to start with, but he soon won me (and Edie) over. They had a lovely friendship going on, and I adored how protective he was with Edie when he discovered the extent of the abuse she had been enduring. He was perfect book boyfriend material!

My only complaint with this book, is that I felt robbed at the end. I know that may seem strange for a book that was over 500 pages long, but I would have loved just a little bit more, because I wasn't ready to let them go.

Another 5Star Read from Mhairi McFarlane
By Belinda Missen
Ask any reader and I’m sure they’ll agree: we all have our favourites that we’ll pick up without exception. Along with Cecelia Ahern, and Lindsey Kelk, Mhairi McFarlane is on that list for me. With money tight the last few months, I was incredibly grateful to HarperCollins for the chance to review this. It’s already written on next week’s shopping list. I must own this book, and so should you.

Who’s That Girl? follows the story of Edie Thompson, unlucky in love and embroiled in a rather unfortunate scandal. She’s hated, the red woman, hounded out of town and back to her native Nottingham to live with her father and mad-cap sister. As part of her exodus, she’s charged by her employer with ghost-writing the autobiography of Elliot Owen (who I couldn’t help but picture as Kit Harrington – not at all offended, if I do say so).

We catch Edie’s life story, the ups and downs, and struggles of re-joining a family home she’s long since fled. There is humour with every page turn, just one of the things I love about McFarlane’s writing. Edie is an engaging, warm, and honest character, and I adored her. Her troubles could be any of our troubles, and so can her successes. It’s always wonderful to read characters that are true to life.

Make no mistake, though. This is not just a romance. This is a story about finding yourself and your place in the world. It is about loving yourself enough to give yourself the things you need, and demanding the things that you want. It’s about friendships, it’s about family, and acceptance. It’s about finding out exactly Who’s That Girl?

I only hope that at some stage, some of the books I write may be this good.

Wonderful

Edie is at the wedding of two colleagues when something unexpected happens that ruins her reputation completely. She’s forced to stay away from the office, to take a job as the ghostwriter of Elliot Owen’s biography. Elliot is a famous actor and at first he isn't easy to get along with. Which is another problem Edie can add to her long list. She and her sister Meg don’t get on very well and moving back into her father’s home is harder than she thought it would be.

Who’s That Girl? is a fun story about what happens when something unexpected ruins your entire life. Edie is a likeable main character and even though she has her flaws she’s strong and she’s resilient. I loved reading about her adventures with her difficult sister, her eccentric neighbour and the famous actor she’s writing about. I often had a smile on my face while I was reading this book. I think a lot of readers will recognize themselves in Edie which makes her approachable and it feels like she’s your friend. It’s brilliant when a writer manages to achieve that.

Mhairi McFarlane’s easy to read writing style and sense of humour are fantastic. Her stories have a wonderful flow and they are fast-paced. I found this story entertaining and sweet. I highly recommend this book, especially to people who are looking for a relaxing read with gorgeous main characters.
