About the Author
Maurice Druon was a French resistance hero, a Knight of the British Empire and a holder of the Grand Croix de la Légion d'Honneur. He was also a member of the Académie française and a celebrated novelist, best known for his series of seven historical novels under the title of The Accursed Kings, which were twice adapted for television. A passionate Anglophile, he was a great expert on all things English, including its medieval history, which provides great inspiration for the series. His many and diverse fans include George RR Martin, Nicolas Sarkozy and Vladimir Putin.

Huge disappointment

Huge disappointment of a book after looking forward to its release for so long. All of the predecessors in this series are stellar, but this is simply horrible. As other reviewers have mentioned, the style and format are a complete departure from previous books in this series. This "first person ramblings of a dottering old man" style is a complete miss. So badly written and poorly edited that I put it down before finishing it. What a shame.

I found the writing much weaker and the plot harder to follow than in the previous books, which were excellent. This one was written sometime after the first six, and the stylistic differences are very jarring. I don't regret reading it to complete the series,and I slogged through to the end. Luckily, this is not the first book in the series - otherwise I would've abandoned it and missed on the rest of these otherwise great books.

Maurice Druon's masterly series of the French side of the early stages of the Hundred Year's' War ends in this train-wreck. In the penultimate book, his favorite protagonist died and this nook feels like his publishers insisted he write another book, so he scribbled off some stream-of-consciousness drivel then his editor tidied it up to make it readable.
It's set well after the others and puts a capstone on the early Crecy period French effort, and the miseries of the common folk at that tome. It's delivered in an unsympathetic way that guarantees you will be bored throughout.
Really really bad. Avoid.
