Info on the "adult" editions of these great books . . . .
By K. Sudhakar
Let me start by saying that I loved these stories as a child. I read "The Lion, the With and the Wardrobe" in fourth grade as a part of class. I was reluctant to read it and had no interest (school kids are like that) but I was sucked into the story very quickly. I had my parents buy me the boxed set and I believe I ended up reading 5 of the 7 books. I absolutely love this story.

After at least 40 minutes of Googling, I finally found out what the difference between the "adult" version and the regular version is. Apparently the "adult" version includes some essay material about the literature and each book contains a synopsis of information you'd need to know from the other books to read the one you're holding. Other than that, only the packaging is different. The stories all remain the same. I only wish Amazon.com would have provided me this information and saved me the time.

Some orderly observations about ordering Narnia.
By Godly Gadfly
The order in which the Narnia Chronicles should be read and published is a matter of great controversy. In my view, the answer to this question lies in a proper understanding of the deeper level of Narnia. When read on an adult level, the Narnia Chronicles function as a powerful medium used by Lewis to impart powerful spiritual truths about Christianity and theology. But these spiritual truths are conveyed more by Biblical allusions than by rigid allegory. This also has implications for the order of the volumes in this series.
The publishers of this edition have elected to follow the chronological order of the series: 1. The Magician's Nephew; 2. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe; 3. The Horse and His Boy; 4. Prince Caspian; 5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; 6. The Silver Chair; 7. The Last Battle. The chronological order makes the books more strictly allegorical than they really were intended to be, and gives the impression that they are an extended allegory rather than incidental allusions, an incorrect impression in my view. Despite all the talk about allegory, it seems to me that Lewis is more fond of incorporating Biblical allusions where and when he pleases, rather than working with a strict and rigid allegory that tightly binds the plot. Certainly the central Biblical themes of creation, fall, redemption and consummation are present, and form the broad chronological coat-hanger on which the series rests. But ultimately Lewis does not want us to become obsessed with chronology, but with content.
Thus there is something to the vehemence with which so many readers argue that the books must be read in the order in which they were first published, namely: 1. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe; 2. Prince Caspian; 3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; 4. The Silver Chair; 5. The Horse and His Boy; 6. The Magician's Nephew; 7. The Last Battle. While it is true that this originally published order is not chronological, it does enhance the process of discovery about the magical world of Narnia, and slowly uncovers various aspects of its history.
It must be conceded that in a letter written in 1957 (published in "Letters to Children"), Lewis did appear to state a mild preference for the chronological order. But in that same letter Lewis concluded: "So perhaps it does not matter very much in which order anyone read them." Surely Lewis' own conclusion is correct. Although my personal thoughts are that the originally published order is perhaps to be marginally preferred, in the end each book is a separate story and an independent glimpse into the exciting world of Narnia. It is the understanding of the allusions that deserves our attention, not an artificial reconstruction of a complicated allegory. These allusions do not need to be artificially joined together in a strict chronological sequence to be enjoyed - they are equally profound and enjoyable as they were read by the first readers, namely, in the originally published order.

Still amazing, after decades... but read LWW first!
By A Customer
What can I add to the discussion of the Narnia books themselves? They're fantastic, and, as a long-time reader of Lewis's work, all I can say is that it's heartening to see that new generations are continuing to discover how wonderful the Chronicles of Narnia are, just as I did about 20 years ago. It's also great to see how many adults continue to treasure them, just as I do today.
The only thing I would say to first-time readers is the same thing that a lot of other reviewers are saying: DON'T READ THE BOOKS IN THE ORDER THAT U.S. PUBLISHERS ARE PUTTING THEM OUT THESE DAYS! Lewis always intended the Narnia books to be published and read in the order in which he wrote them: LWW, PC, VDT, SC, HHB, MN, and LB. It's true that, near the end of his life, Lewis pondered the notion of having the books published and read in chronological order -- but only after an extensive set of internal revisions.
As it turned out, Lewis never had the chance to complete those revisions. So, as they stand now, the books really should be read in the original sequence. For one thing, that's the only way for new readers to discover Narnia in the way that Lewis himself discovered it. Since Lewis never got around to his intended rewriting, the overall story unfolds much more meaningfully -- and much more dramatically -- when it's read OUT of order. For instance, part of the enjoyment of reading The Magician's Nephew is realizing just how a land that the reader has already fallen in love with actually came into being; there's an almost archaeological ("oh, NOW I understand") feel to it. If you read MN first, you miss completely that very important -- and very rich -- subtext.
I could go on: about why The Horse and His Boy should be Book #5, why The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is THE only real gateway into Narnia, and so forth. But the point is clear. I have a strong suspicion that publishers have changed the order of the books not to adhere to any wishes that Lewis himself may or may not have had, but because some corporate executive decided that less complexity would result in more sales. Publishers should have more faith in the ability of readers to appreciate complicated textual issues, even if (or especially if!) those readers are children. To read the Narnia Chronicles in the order they're in now is to deprive oneself of the most meaningful reading of the story as a whole. So read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe first -- and, while you're at it, maybe let the publishers know that you'd like to see future editions appear in the original order. But whatever sequence you follow, enjoy the books themselves!

A most attractive portrait of J.M.Keynes
By Ralph Blumenau
J.M.Keynes is best known as an economist; but he had many other accomplishments, and this beautifully-written and affectionate biography brings all of them out; and, though of course there is a good deal of economics in the book, the treatment is (mostly) not too technical. It also brings out Keynes’ character: he was not only one of the most brilliant intellects of his time, beautifully articulate and persuasive, but was also kind, generous, affectionate, happy, confident, a man “of joyous vitality”, gregarious, a foe to all pessimism, and “the least envious of men”. (All this according to the author; but he also quotes people who had a more negative view of him.) He was casually and inconsistently antisemitic until the advent of the Nazis cured him of this (and Wikipedia tells me that he was a supporter of Zionism).

Keynes had many homosexual relationships with members of the Apostles and of the Bloomsbury set, but he also had pick-ups in London. But, unlike many others, he was not tortured by this aspect of his nature - nor, for that matter, did it prevent him from being happily in love with his wife, the Russian-born ballerina Lydia Lopokova whom he married in 1925 when he was 43. There is a long and detailed chapter about all this in the middle of the book.

His parents (excellent portraits of both of them) adored him. He sailed through Eton (exceptionally, because quite unathletic, a member of Pop). He went on to King’s College Cambridge where he read Mathematics, and was a member of the Apostles. The atmosphere at Eton, at King’s and at the meetings of Apostles is again masterfully conveyed. The Apostles repudiated “customary morals, conventions and traditional wisdom”: they strengthened Keynes’ already independent thinking, and their belief that the prime objects of life were “love, the creation and enjoyment of aesthetic experience, and the pursuit of knowledge” also spoke to what was already in him. Their attitude was élitist, and this, too, would be an aspect of Keynes’ views.

It was also the view of the Bloomsbury Group to which Keynes later belonged. (When he was in London, Keynes would live in Bloomsbury.) Again the author gives us a brilliant little summery of the group. Perhaps through them Keynes became a connoisseur of the arts. In 1918 he attended an auction in Paris and came back spent £500 to start his collection of mainly modern French paintings. In 1941 he became a trustee of the National Gallery and in 1946 the first Chairman of the Arts Council. He was instrumental in creating the Cambridge Arts Theatre and preventing the demolition of the Covent Garden Theatre and made it into the Royal Opera House.

By then, of course, he had long made his name as an economist. In 1906, after graduation, he had a 20-month spell at the India Office before returning to Cambridge to lecture on Economics (he had himself studied Economics for only one term, informally, under Alfred Marshall) and to become a Fellow of King’s. In due course he would become the College Bursar and made brilliant investments for the College, increasing its wealth twelve-fold while he held that post. (The fortunes of the investments he made for himself fluctuated wildly.)

In 1913 he was asked to sit on a Royal Commission on Indian Finance, and when, on the outbreak of the First World War there was a banking crisis, it was a memorandum he sent to Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, that deterred him from suspending gold payments for the duration, and shortly afterwards he was recruited to the Treasury. In 1917 he was put in charge of a new Treasury department managing Britain’s external finances, and was of course much concerned with the enormous drain on Britain’s gold reserve. When the war ended, Keynes agreed that German reparations should make up for this drain; but he insisted that the sum fixed should be an amount that the Germans could pay without wrecking their industry which would have to produce the amount, and he calculated that the most she could afford to pay was £3,000 million. In fact the Allies demanded £6,600 million. Keynes was the principal Treasury representative at the Paris Peace Conference, and there is a fascinating account of the human side of his interactions with the Germans and with the members of his own side who “thought only in terms of seizing booty or of placating voters”. Keynes was in despair and resigned from the Treasury in June 1919 and wrote his famous scathing, eloquent and prophetic “The Economic Consequences of the Peace” - striking excerpts of which are quoted. Davenport-Hines judiciously examines the influence of this book.

Keynes always took a low view of politicians, though he was a life-long supporter, advisor and campaigner of the Liberal Party. But, though generally opposed to a nationalist approach to economics, during the crisis of the Great Depression he abandoned the Liberal creed of Free Trade in favour of tariff protection (1930).

Though his economic ideas became increasingly radical, they were not anti-capitalist. He wanted to improve capitalism, making it work more efficiently by ironing out the oscillations between booms and slumps, but also contributing to the general happiness and stability of society: he always thought that “economics ... is a side of ethics”. The main obstacles he saw in the governments cutting back expenditure during slumps, when they ought to be doing the opposite: they should reduce unemployment by investing in public works. This would have a “multiplier effect”. Lloyd George’s Liberals adopted this idea for the General Election of 1929. The fullest statement of Keynes’ ideas came in his General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money, published in 1936.

In 1940, during the Second World War broke out, he again began to work as an advisor in the Treasury, and his ideas influenced the budgets of the time. He was sent to the United States in 1941 to try to improve the Lend-Lease arrangements: he was unsuccessful in this, as he would be in later discussions: the Americans were determined to reduce London’s role in the post-war economy; and the two sides were also badly at odds in their working methods, to their mutual resentment. But he played a key role at Bretton Woods, in 1944, where the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank were created to stabilize the post-war world economy.

Keynes’ General Theory had not mentioned the Welfare State, but when Sir William Beveridge produced his famous report in 1942, Keynes (ennobled that year) would be a strong supporter of it. But he believed in balanced budgets and was opposed to deficit finance. When the Labour government of 1945 enacted the Welfare State, Keynes warned that, once Lend-Lease ended, this would plunge Britain into bankruptcy. When Lease-Lend was in fact brought to an abrupt end in August 1945, Keynes was sent to America again to secure a huge loan at 2% interest, in return for which he had to agree to sterling convertibility. This saved not only the Welfare State but even the Labour Government. But back in England he had to defend the agreement against those who regarded it as “an economic Munich”. He exerted prodigious energy on all this, although ever since 1937 he had been in poor health, a nd overwork was almost certainly responsible for the heart attack that killed him in April 1946, at the age of 62.

This is a most attractive portrait of Keynes, and the quotations of him are a delight and full of wisdom.

Meeting Mr Keynes

This is the first biography to bring Keynes the man to life. Skidelsky's mammoth work is compendious but a plodding affair. I am most grateful to Mr Daveneport-Hines and find myself wanting more.

Review
'This new exam preparation course takes a 'flipped' learning approach, which means students receive language input before their face-to-face class. This pre-class preparation can be done online or using the excellent 112-page workbook. Class time is then spent developing language skills and exam strategies. The teacher's book is essential, providing spot checks to clarify students' understanding of language points, and extension activities. Each of the twelve units finishes with exam practice tasks, which can be done for homework. The book is full of useful exam tips.' Book of the month, EL Gazette, April 2016, p. 19

‘This is the original game of thrones’ George R.R. Martin

From the publishers that brought you A Game of Thrones comes the series that inspired George R.R. Martin’s epic work.

“Accursed! Accursed! You shall be accursed to the thirteenth generation!”

The Iron King – Philip the Fair – is as cold and silent, as handsome and unblinking as a statue. He governs his realm with an iron hand, but he cannot rule his own family: his sons are weak and their wives adulterous; while his red-blooded daughter Isabella is unhappily married to an English king who prefers the company of men.

A web of scandal, murder and intrigue is weaving itself around the Iron King; but his downfall will come from an unexpected quarter. Bent on the persecution of the rich and powerful Knights Templar, Philip sentences Grand Master Jacques Molay to be burned at the stake, thus drawing down upon himself a curse that will destroy his entire dynasty…

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Sporting an enthusiastic introduction by George R. R. Martin (in which he calls the book “the original game of thrones”), this is the first U.S. publication of the first volume of French novelist Druon’s seven-volume historical saga, collectively known as The Accursed Kings. Originally published in 1955, the novel is set in the year 1314. Philip IV, the king of France, has disbanded the Knights Templar, arresting, torturing, and executing most of them. Relations between France and England are as strained as they have ever been. Philip’s increasingly desperate search for money to pay his massive debts has virtually bankrupted the country. Against this sprawling backdrop, Druon tells the story of Robert of Artois, a French lord whose lands have been taken from him by his greedy aunt and whose efforts to reclaim his birthright will lead to all-out war between France and England. Unlike Martin’s multivolume Song of Fire and Ice, Druon’s saga is based on real history and features real people as its central characters. It’s historical fiction on a grand scale, full of political intrigue, family drama, and characters who, while drawn from life, are larger than it. Fans of historical epics who have not yet discovered Druon’s saga will be thrilled with this one. --David Pitt

Review

‘Iron kings and strangled queens, battles and betrayals, lies and lust, the curse of the Templars, the doom of a great dynasty – and all of it (well, most of it) straight from the pages of history, and believe me, the Starks and the Lannisters have nothing on the Capets and Plantagenets. Whether you are a history buff or a fantasy fan, Druon's epic will keep you turning pages. This was the original game of thrones’ George R.R. Martin

‘Blood-curdling tale of intrigue, murder, corruption and sexual passion’ The Sunday Times

‘Dramatic and colourful as a Dumas romance but stiffened by historical accuracy and political insight’ The Sunday Times

‘Barbaric, sensual, teeming with life, based in wide reading and sound scholarship…among the best historical novels’ The Times Literary Supplement

One of the best historical novels ever written.
By Tanya
This is the first (and probably, the best) in Druon's excellent series, Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings), dealing with the demise of the Kapetian dynasty and the beginning of the 100-year War. The legend has it that after King Philippe the Fair (Philippe Le Beau) disbanded (and destroyed) the Order of the Templars, their Master, Jacques Molais, cursed Philippe and his seed as he was burned at the stake. At the time of the curse, Philippe was in great health and had three grown sons. Less than a quarter of a century later, the Kapetians ceded the throne to their cousins Valois--for the lack of male issue to take up the throne and the inability of female issue to do so (prior to Philippe's death, a woman could techincally rule France). What happened? That is precisely the subject of Les Rois Maudits--and the first book deals with the family from the last months of Philippe's reign and until the ascention of his oldest son, Louis X.
I read this book in one day. I was awed by the characters, particularly Philippe and his gorgeous daughter Isabelle, Queen of England (remember Braveheart--the pretty French princess?), and of course, Robert D'Artois and his evil cousin Magot. The only problem with it is that it definitely leaves you hanging in the end, simply making you go and read the second book--the Prisoner of Chateau Gayard.
I would highly recommend it--it is gripping, well-written, historically accurate.

the iron king
By Alla S.
"The Iron King" by Maurice Druon follows the intrigues, passions, murders, and backstabbing within the French dynasty in the 1300s. It was originally published in French in the 1950s, and is the first book in the Accursed Kings series (there are seven in all, and they follow the story of the dynasty after it's--you guessed it, cursed--in the first book, by the unfairly executed Grand Master Jacques de Molay).

I like historical fiction novels, and Druon's series was very popular when it was initially published. Though I've heard of it, it was my first time actually reading it. The title of the book, "The Iron King" refers to Philip IV (Philip the Fair), the King of France who has a fiery temper. After he is unable to overtake Jacques de Molay's Order of the Knights of Templar organization, the King gets his vengeance by sentencing Jacques and the rest of the senior participants of this organization to a lengthy jail sentence, and ultimately to burn at the stake. Jacques, whose organization was dismantled and life ruined, vows revenge. He curses the people who did this to him--the King of France (the Iron King), the Pope, and the King's Minister Guillame de Nogaret. As the story starts unfolding further, the curse begins to work--and, reminiscent to Agatha Christies "And then there were none," -the recipients of the curse start to die one by one.

Meanwhile, the Iron King's sons--Louis, King of Navarre and Charles, are being cuckolded by their cheating wives--Marguerite and Blanche. Worst of all, the cheating scandal is revealed to Isabella, the Iron King's daughter and sister to the cuckolded husbands. The informer, Robert III of Artois, seeks to fulfill his own agenda after losing a long battle over inheritance with the mother and aunt of the unfaithful wives, Mahaut, who also happens to be Robert's own aunt. If her daughters and niece lose favor with the Iron King, Mahaut's power will substantially weaken and Robert might be able to wrench away the inheritance.

Even though Isabella is married to a homosexual husband, the King of England Edward II and scarcely happy in her private life herself, she seeks Robert's help in getting evidence of their affairs and providing it to the King of France, her father. If the scandal gets revealed, then both the lives of the unfaithful wives and those of their lovers, the Aunay brothers, Gautier and Philippe, will be in danger.

Not everything gets wrapped up neatly (this is a series after all), and as the book ends, France's kingdom is left in turmoil. Though the writing style isn't easy on the eyes, the interesting storyline more than makes up for it. Looking forward to reading the second book, which will hopefully come out.

This is Not The Original Game of Thrones… It’s Even Better
By Charlie Brown
The Middle Ages are called the dark ages for a reason: there are often difficult to study, understand and to be able to grasp its impact on the shaping of the modern world. They are confusing, there are not that many reliable sources of research and those existing need a real expert on the field to bring us within reach of what it meant to be royalty at that time or to gravitate around royalty, to be Catholic, to be a Jew, to be rich or to be like the 99% of the rest of Europe: poor, hungry, sick, ignorant and surrounded by death as part of life, often more present than not. Maurice Druon accomplishes it, bringing us a superb work of fiction using non-fiction history as a framework. You must read the Iron King, as well as the other six books that complete the series of the Accursed Kings. This is not an option, it is something you should put in your bucket list and try to accomplish as soon as possible

The English translation has a foreword from George R. R. Martin, who will tell you he used Maurice’s work as inspiration for its A Song of Ice and Fire and for its TV version, Game of Thrones. Even if it says it there in the cover and may seem like a plot from the publishers to try to sell you a 1950’s forgotten literary jewel, it is not a marketing plot or a favor from George R.R, it is true: If you watched Game of Thrones, you will see that it is nothing more than a repetition, I would even say a censored and watered down repetition of the constant plots, conspiracies, treasons and betrayals that are an integral part of the Accursed Kings and this period of European history. There is no Games of Thrones without the Accursed Kings, and they are even worse because all these terrible things and events not only happened for real and repeated over and over, but also mostly happened amongst members of the same family! There are no inviolable principles, or better yet, there are no principles at all, everything is valid and things are often done without any remorse.

The only problem is that only three of the books have been translated to English (from its original French): The Iron King, the Strangled Queen and the Poisoned Crown. The 4th book, The Royal Succession is due on November 4th, and the 5th book, the She Wolf, will only come out in late 2015. There is no release date for the 6th and 7th books, which is a shame because you need to read the entire series to become full circle on the plot and see the full consequences of Philippe the Fair decisions and the Templar’s Curse. If you are lucky enough like me, who happens to be fully fluent in Spanish, you can finish the series sooner as the Spanish translation has been around for many years now. But worse case you do the A Song of Ice and Fire thing and wait a few years to read it all, it is worth it
