Solomon Creed, by Simon Toyne

It's a mystery thriller. A mysterious man arrives in a town via a crashed aircraft now threatened by the tinder dry landscape catching fire from the burning wreckage. Unable to remember who he is but with a vague recollection that he has to meet someone who just happens to have been buried that same day, he surprises himself that he knows about aeroplanes and various other things. That he is carrying a book written by the founder of the town and inscribed to him by the recently interred body only adds to the conundrum.

Crawling from the wreckage
By Quiverbow
This was from Amazon Vine UK.

This is a sort of Clint Eastwood's 'Man With No Name' in a contemporary setting.

Whilst Solomon Creed helps the town fight the fire, there is a second narrative involving a former cop, Mulcahy, who happens to be waiting for the same plane. You know their paths will cross at some point but not when or why. All we know is Mulcahy is up to no good. You also realise that Mayor Cassidy and Chief Morgan are also suspect characters.

What I did find strange is that the first couple of chapters has the mysterious Creed written in the first person but by chapter six (it's just 25 pages in as all the chapters are a few pages) he's third person. Maybe I missed something. It's a mystery thriller with a hint of supernatural that manifests itself in the scribblings of town founder Reverend Jack 'King' Cassidy, who we learn about at various junctures via his published biography and later private journals.

It's a decent read but isn't anything exceptional and I telegraphed what was going on and you might, too. Though the ending was rather weak and left a few questions unanswered, I suppose all might be revealed in the subsequent outings for Mr Creed.

Not having read Toyne Books before I didn't know what ...
By De (De's Cavern)
Not having read Toyne Books before I didn't know what to expect. The opening paragraph was sufficient to spark my interest and for me to keep reading. The story line was somewhat basic but, when interspersed with the excerpts from jack Cassidy's journal, the pot kept bubbling. It was not quite science fiction, of which I am not a fan, however, the main character was extremely interesting even to the clever twist at the end. I hope to read more of Simon Toyne books.

Solomon Creed #1
By That Book Guy
A plane crashes into the desert near the town of Redemption. An albino man with no memory and no shoes walks away from the wreckage - all he knows is that he must rescue a man that is already dead.

I've never heard of Simon Toyne before but the premise of Solomon Creed interested me so I gave it a shot and I am so glad I did as this was one of the best reads I've had this year! The story is full of mystery, suspense and action, with many complex layers that all came together well in the last quarter of the book. There were so many twists, it made my head spin. The characters are great, especially Solomon (who I look forward to reading about and learning more of in following novels in the future), as well as many of the town's residents, such as Holly, Morgan and Cassidy. The intro chapters for each part of the book which went into the history of Redemption and it's church from journal pages of the town founder Jack Cassidy, felt a little pointless and dragged out when first reading them but when it all came together at the end with the current day storyline, it was an excellent end and very well fit after all. It has a little bit of a supernatural element to the story too (not too much at this point) but I hope this is explored more in future novels in the series as this was something that I found particularly interesting.

Overall this was an absolutely brilliant read that I will definitely be recommending to anyone who will listen to me. If you enjoy reading the Jason Bourne and/or Jack Reacher series, with a (small) supernatural twist, then I guarantee you will love this one.
