Updated version of the best general purpose atlas

This remains the atlas with the most detail about the most places on Earth. I still like a printed atlas to show details with some context that you miss on a screen displayed map that requires you to zoom in to see text and thus lose the big picture of how things relate to each other.
This new edition has numerous updated place names and includes changes to reflect the disputed regions in Ukraine including Crimea "administered by Russia." There are 132 map plates. Most are a larger scale than any other general purpose atlas. They are beautifully drawn with colored shading representing elevations. There are no significant new map plates from other recent editions - just updates to mostly the same maps.
This is a large hard cover book, but it is not clothbound. It does come in a slipcase. There is a large bookmark with a key to map symbols and a ribbon bookmark. The maps are by Bartholomew and it is printed and bound in Germany.
I would like to have seen larger scale area maps for major world cities. New York, Tokyo, London are on 1:1,000,000 scale; Beijing and Seoul are at 1:2,500,000 and Mumbai, Delhi and Mexico City are at only 1:5,000,000. There are only 3 plates of the ocean floor with limited detail.
I was disappointed in the physical condition of the copy I received. The book had been dropped and the bottom corner was damaged but the slipcase was not damaged so this was not a shipping problem. Also the ribbon apparently had glue on the free end folded into the book so that removing it damaged one of the map plates. I also found an insect pressed and preserved in the index portion of the book. There is also a mistake on the map key in the front endpaper - Western Russia is shown as plate 44 but it is plate 47.

Excellent Atlas, Terrible Quality Control

I'm now on my FIFTH attempt to get a copy of this atlas in perfect condition. And I don't think perfection is asking too much when a book costs $200. Every copy I've received thus far has been defective in some way - Ripped covers, bent corners, uncut, misprinted and bent pages. Absolutely unacceptable. The atlas itself is excellent, which is why I keep trying.

Big pages, lots of detail

This is a beautiful large atlas. About half of the book is an index, where you can look up names of countries, continents, cities, rivers, etc and find out what page they are on. It's sad for me that so many pages go to the index, but it's great for finding anywhere. Even tiny little cities and landmarks are noted.
The maps are about half the book. Because the pages are big, you can look at a nice big spread on each page. Each continent breaks across several pages, and you can cut the pages out and tapes them together along the edges to make a giant wall poster map. This is great for continents, like Africa, where there are limited options for wall posters.
Overall, if you want a big, heavy, comprehensive atlas, then this is a good option. This is especially good if you will look up names of places that you see mentioned in the news or elsewhere. It's less good if you will just browse, because so many pages go to the index, but still the maps are big, beautiful, and have lots of detail. It's expensive, but you get a lot of book for the price.
