BORDERLINES - and much more
By Nina Pedersen
BORDERLINES - when I chanced on the novel by Michela Wrong, having been an avid fan of her past writings about Africa, "In the Footsteps of Mr. Kurtz", "I didn't do it for you" and her last, "Our Turn to Eat", I was intrigued by the title. I was curious about its definition even before I got a hold of the book. What is a "borderline?", something imprecise, flexible, moveable, yes indeed, all these definitions could be applied to the book when I finally read it. Having attended a presentation recently by David Morrell, whose book "First Blood" became the Rambo series, I was reminded about his observation that anger is good motivation for a book. In Wrong's book I would add pain. The two combined, pain and anger, are forces when cooled and fused become powerful incentives to produce a story well crafted. Wrong has indeed done that. By framing the story of the struggle to define borderlines between two countries, Darrar and North Darrar and its political implications around the personal love story of Paula Shackleton, she has indeed created a masterpiece of story telling.

Her description of the country Darrar so closely resembles Eritrea that it most likely served as its model where nothing much change nor will it ever as long as humans draw on the will to live from fighting. The French poet Arthur Rimbaud lived in Eritrea over a hundred years ago. Sadly he returned to France to die. The result of the justice sought in the arbitration of the case of the two countries by the International Justice Court at the Hague is equally sad and unsatisfactory with its impotence and political manipulations.

Michela Wrong not only offers a terrifically well spun story, she also shares with us the insight of a razor sharp mind into human frailties and its vagaries, warts and all, as well as the delicacies of relationships formed under the most unusual and difficult circumstances. Along the way she drops nuggets of words of wisdom, pearls as it were, that a life lived to the fullest has the capacity to share with us, the reader. In the end she narrates the triumph of the human spirit to overcome challenges that life throws at us.

BORDERLINES - indeed, an apt definition of the delicate impreciseness of life and relationships, and not only geographical borders, clearly drawn or not, come to mind. I need not add that she is a very skillful writer. Grab the book - you will be absorbed from start to finish once you open the first page. Enjoy

A border conflict in the Horn of Africa
By Roel D.
For someone with a weak spot for international law and who has spent many years in the region, Borderlines by Michela Wrong was a wonderful present. I had very much enjoyed Wrong's damning account of corruption in Kenya in It's our turn to eat. This is her first work of fiction, but the topic looked very exciting indeed.

Borderlines is a well written legal thriller, providing a fictional account of the works of the arbitration commission assessing the border between Darrar and North Darrar. The narrator, Paula Shackleton, is a lawyer working for the small team working for the government of North Darrar. The descriptions of the harsh reality of a young police state, of the case preparations and of the proceedings in The Hague are all very clear and realistic. There are also some funny and recognisable accounts, borderline cliché, of expat life in a small African country (e.g. how to find out if your US embassy contact is a CIA agent).

The book is a good and inviting read, but suffers from a few flaws. If the book is so obviously about Eritrea, why not simply use the real place names? This could have made the context so much more interesting for the non-initiated. Also, the ease of her career shift, from corporate lawyer to border litigation, is not very convincing, nor is the link with the story within the story, on a previous affair with a married lawyer in the States. There is a vague connection with her later life in North Darrar, but it all feels rather unnecessary.

Overall a very good read, also recommended for those readers with no personal history in the Horn of Africa or on international law.

A great first novel
By Laurie Fry
A great novel for a veteran Africa hand like myself, but Borderlines deserves attention from a much wider audience. Paula Shackleton's story, told through skilfully interwoven plots, takes the reader to the dark places of personal and professional morality. Detailed historical reference points are more than timely for the current migration crisis, but themes of law, justice, morality and diaspora culture are universal. The literary comparison brought to mind is, unexpectedly, Arthur Miller ( who also used the medium of a fictional lawyer, Alfieri). Personally, I find few writers who can challenge us on the timeless issues of humanity with this power.
