A fun and relatable novel for 30-somethings
By Z. de Ruiter
Lindsey already writes two very successful rom-com series and so it's always equal measures exciting and nerve-wrecking when a favourite author releases a book that is a stand-alone. Exciting because it's a new book from a favourite author, period, nerve-wrecking because what if I don't like the new characters or storyline? Luckily for her fans, Lindsey has written another hilarious read filled with brilliant characters you'll want to be friends with.

As this delightful rom-com's title may give away, the story focuses on a girl, Maddie, who feels like she is always the bridesmaid; second best to her friends, sister and even at work she just muddles along without any real ambition. It has worked well for her so far, but she does start to wonder if there's more to aim for in life. This changes when one of her best friends is getting married and she's roped in, once more, to be the bridesmaid and basically be the person organising everything behind the scenes. It's not that she doesn't want to help her friend, she does, but Maddie starts to realise that perhaps the people around her take her too much for granted and she can be far more than just a bridesmaid in the background.

While I want to party with I Heart's Angela and Jenny Lopez, and go on an exotic holiday with About A Girl's Tess, Maddie is the character by Lindsey's hand I feel is most relatable to me personally. Sure, she ended in some ridiculous slapstick moments at times, but that was hugely enjoyable to read and underneath the laugh-out-loud moments there were some real issues dealing with someone being unappreciated at work, among friends and trying to find that magical one true love (something which most people can relate to at one point or another in their lives!).

Lindsey has always had a flair for writing characters that feel like real people dealing with similar things that are happening in my own life, and in Always the Bridesmaid in particular it has been spot on. Though perhaps the situations the fictional characters end up in are heightened for comedy purposes, they are still fellow 30-somethings struggling with love, work and finding their place among their friends and in life, which really resonates with me. Yes, her books are brilliantly written, a hoot from start to finish and a brilliant escape from my own hectic life, but they also confirm that my worries and struggles are similar to those of other (fictional) people my age and that is incredibly reassuring.

I'm not sure if Always the Bridesmaid was intended as a standalone or more books with Maddie will follow, but I for one would love to read more about her and her friends Lauren and Sarah! My only (minor) niggle with this novel was that it felt too short as didn't want to leave these characters just yet. While there is a Christmas title in the works for the About a Girl series first (yay!) I really hope we haven't seen the last of Maddie and the gang. Always the Babysitter, anyone?!

Everything I hoped it would be!

Somehow, Always the Bridesmaid is the first book I’ve read of Lindsey’s, although I’ve been aware of her work, and the fact that she’s a much-loved and popular author for a few years now. When the opportunity came along to review her latest novel I was like ‘pick me!’ and I was excited to finally see what her writing was like for myself.

It didn’t disappoint. Lindsey’s writing is as witty and engaging as I hoped it would be. Maddie is one of the most likeable characters I’ve spent time with recently as she felt very realistic. Whilst on paper she’s a bit naïve and a bit of a pushover at times, it's never in a ‘wet’ way which has you shouting at the book, which you sometimes get. She’s also very strong, hard-working, a very good friend, and a bit of a romantic. She won’t rock the boat until absolutely necessary. The way Maddie internalises things until she’s about to burst leads to some great scenes in the novel which had me laughing out loud and also feeling her pain at times.

I wondered whether the book would be all about the wedding, and I wondered whether that would hold my interest, but I needn’t have worried. There’s a lot more to this book than being the bridesmaid and it could very well have had a different title. Maddie’s work-life is a key story line as she works as an events assistant to a dragon of a boss who tries her best to undermine her at every opportunity; a great character to hate. When there is an opportunity for promotion I was rooting for Maddie all the way and there are some great scenes surrounding this.

A key part of the story is Maddie having to contend with the contrasting love-lives of her two best friends. There’s Lauren who has just announced she’s getting married, and soon. Oh, and she’s expecting Maddie to plan her wedding free-of-charge, of course. Then there’s Sarah who has just announced she’s getting divorced. The last thing she wants is to be surrounded by someone else’s wedding plans, their plans for their happy ever after. Maddie is very much "piggy in the middle" between these two at times, and again there are some great scenes between these friends: funny ones, sad ones, ones that wind you up and ones that make you go ‘yay!’ for best friends.

Then, of course, there’s the romance...well that’s what Maddie wants and deserves but is she going to get it? There are male characters in this novel who give Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver a good run for their money. I loved the twists and turns in this part of the story.

As a newcomer to Lindsey’s writing, this book was everything that I hoped it would be; I’m sure Lindsey’s long-standing fans will also love this stand-alone book.

Another winner from Lindsey Kelk!

Lindsey Kelk has done it again: created a new heroine for us to cheer for and adore!

Always the Bridesmaid focuses on Maddie, an assistant at an events planning agency who longs to be taken seriously by...well, everyone. Her family don't think her job is a proper one and treat her like she's wasting her life. Her best friend Lauren takes advantage of Maddie's event-planning skills and coerces her into planning a huge wedding in just three months--free of charge, of course. Her other best friend is going through a divorce and decides that she wants the newly open position that's come up at Maddie's office--a position that Matilda in HR is convinced would be perfect for Maddie. And then there's Shona, her evil boss, who goes our of her way to make *everyone* miserable. Throw in a cad, an extremely tall lawyer who knows how to waltz and a pink-dyed rabbit or two and you've got a perfet rom-com.

Lindsey makes you care about Maddie from the first page and, when she catches the eye of Will, the fit best man from a wedding she's helped plan, you know he's going to be trouble, but you hope he won't break Maddie's heart. Because Maddie's already had her heart broken by Seb, who left her and then married and started a family with someone else.

With wacky scenarios, best friends bonding, and Maddie trying to figure out what she really wants, we get a story that makes you smile and sometimes even makes you want to slap some sense into Maddie. Such a fun read! Loved it!
