A treat to read!

If Mario Andretti and Studs Terkel had a baby, he would be Eugene Salomon. Perched like a parrot on Mr. Salomon's shoulder, we enter the world of the short-term personal chauffeur. Mr. Salomon's job provides him a lively livelihood. The city is a teeming conglomerate of characters as he flawlessly drives and focuses on his passengers. For years he has been observing human beings in our vast variety - and he has been taking notes! Tell him where you want to go and he'll get you there and, if you choose, he'll chat along the way. He's genuinely interested in who you are and where you've been. Your time together gives him the chance to gain an insight into how you live and what you think about life in general or something specific. You choose a topic or he will. If you prefer Silence, that's fine too, but it's a missed opportunity to charm and be charmed by this savvy, delightful designated driver.
Mr. Salomon's heart beats to the pulse of his true love, Manhattan. He flows through the city like blood through an artery. He knows who lives here and who comes and goes. What matters is that we're all fellow travelers, going somewhere, being somewhere here and now, with the chance to connect and enjoy the ride on our way. Adventures and insights abound. Here is a guy who pays attention, with stories to glean and stories to tell. No one celebrates people like Mr. Salomon. And no one suffers fools less gladly. Fame and fortune do not buy you his respect but he'll give it freely if it's warranted. Tolerant, patient, curious and cheerful, Mr. Salomon has his limits and it's "OUT!!! ... GET OUT OF MY CAB!!!" if you cross the line. Oh! The places he goes and the people he meets!
Diogenes, the guy you've been looking for has his eyes and ears wide open and he's behind the wheel of a bright yellow taxi in New York City.

The work life of a New York taxi driver

There have been lots of books written about Taxi driving. This is one of the better ones. Mr. Salomon's "confessions" are a series of anecdotal vignettes written in an easy going style that is sure to captivate the average reader whose curiosity about the work life of a taxi driver would provide some insight. If a reader knows New York City, the revelations in this book will not be a surprise, because one can witness at least some of the behavior he describes, just simply, by living in the City. Taxi drivers are a special breed. They may not start out that way. That is something which is gradually imposed on them by society, and by the nature of the experience. It is a truism that if a person drives a taxi long enough--and it seems Mr. Salomon has--a driver can, and often will, see or directly experience nearly every kind of human behavior and social interaction. Mr. Salomon succeeds with his articulate interpretation, laced with humor and bit of taxi driver philosophy, of an experience most people would find a bit off-putting, but nonetheless appealing. If one is expecting to read the revelations of a Travis Bickel-like character, this book is not for you. This is about an average guy just trying to do his job. I think he has done a pretty good job.

less than i hoped for

i heard the author on a radio show, and he sounded interesting, and had a nice manner. the book ,however, is dull. just lots of page and a half little stories that dont at all tie together, there is no overall narrative, or " vibe". each story is a page and a half chapter, and i keep reading a chapter at a time, hoping the next one has real interest. most times, it doesnt. its was only a couple of bucks, certainly not the worst money i ever spent, but i was hopeful for much more.
