Beautiful and inspiring
By John Fish
Kate Gross's memoir is a book about how to live and when you read this it will leave a mark on you that you will carry like a torch to guide you through your own life. ‘’Late Fragments’ is a book that is poetic and beautiful.
Kate lived a life that many can only dream of joining the Civil Service and entering Downing Street through the Black Door of No. 10 working for two Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and then setting up a Charity with Tony Blair (African Governance Initiative) travelling the World meeting Presidents and Prime Ministers raising Money and awareness for AGI and for Peace and Reconciliation in parts of Africa torn apart by War. Awarded the OBE in 2014 for her work.
As you read through the book Kate shares her life with you, as she starts out on life's journey, how she met the love of her life Billy Boyle (The best looking man she's has ever kissed), entering the World of the Civil Service and life as aide to two Prime Ministers and then setting up the Charity alongside Tony Blair who is Patron Kate would then become CEO at the age of thirty and her twin boys Oscar and Isaac. Ultimately this book is a memoir, as Kate was diagnosed with advanced Colon Cancer in October 2012, and set about writing a daily blog kateelizabethgross.wordpress.com as a gift to herself and prove she could still 'create'. The last entry is titled 'The Last Post' entered by Kate's Mother.
What Kate gives to the World is a book that is a brave, frank and honest, as well as moving, there is humour here that comes through. How to live for everyday and find beauty and wonder in everything how we live our lives and how to love, she talks to the reader as if you are sat with her, talking about the importance of work in each of our lives, parents and relationships with Children.
As you read through ‘Late Fragments’ Kate's love of literature and Poetry come through as well as her amazing character and love of life. Kate deep love for her twin boys she calls her 'Knights' and Kate should have been granted many years to see them grow and travel the World as she did. This outstanding memoir is filled with love and a celebration of life, but also a deeply heart-wrenching book. A book that should be read by everyone as a celebration of life and to keep Kate's legacy alive.
‘Late Fragment’ by Raymond Carver
And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

Philosophical, deeply, deeply moving chronicle of one life and of life itself.
By A. I. McCulloch
Books like this are never an easy read; Kate Gross metaphorically follows in the footsteps of UK journalists John Diamond and the Picardie sisters, Ruth and Justine, in producing an account of the last months of her life with cancer.

John Diamond lived long enough to see his book in print, but both Ruth Picardie and Kate have the end of their story told by others as they died before the book could be published.

Ruth's differed slightly in that, pre internet blogs, it was a collection of pieces from her newspaper column - it's staggering to think it refers to events of nearly twenty years ago now, and that the toddlers she left behind are now adults. Kate formed the bones of her book on her blog at kateelizabethgross@wordpress.com, and many of her followers will no doubt treasure this book as a collected reminder of what they have lost.

Late Fragments shares some of the random but planned nature of the Picardie book, written when her cancer was rapidly advancing and her days were definitely numbered, entries are fragmented in one sense - often padded out with the contributions of others.

But what contributions they are. Deeply philosophical and reflective, Kate took much from the writing of Raymond Carver, whose writing features here, alongside the writing of Viktor Frankl, which features towards the end of the book. 'Late Fragment' is also the title of one of Carver's best known poems (misnamed on the back of the book as 'Late Fragments', the title of Kate's book).

It isn't a heavy read as such - in her thirty six brief years Kate Gross led a fascinating, unusual and extremely useful life, before the bowel troubles that had dogged her for years were finally, tragically belatedly, diagnosed as an aggressive cancer. The book celebrates Kate's deep love for her husband, Billy, and for her 'Knights', her twin sons Oscar and Isaac, born in May 2009.

There is also a quote from Rohana Mistry which echoes a much anthologised quote from the much loved humorist Erma Bombeck, who died of breast cancer. "Bring out your good dishes.. your good clothes, no sense hoarding them... bring them all out Roxana and enjoy them.' Bombeck's was 'If I had my time to live over again - I would have burned the pink candle, sculptured like a rose, that melted in storage.' Kate burned her pink rose candles, brought out her dishes and wore the clothes. Her book thrums with the celebration of what makes life really worth living.

As the flyleaf says, Kate should have been granted decades to say all this. It's a massive tragedy that she wasn't, but this is a powerful legacy to leave.

Well written, touching and perceptive
By Sid Nuncius
This is a good book. It is well written, thoughtful and well worth reading by anyone involved in any way with terminal disease. Kate Gross manages to talk honestly about aspects of her life, her cancer ("The Nuisance") and her impending death largely without sentimentality and sometimes with great perceptiveness.

I find it almost impossible to review this book in any great depth for two reasons. One is that it seems almost unbearably inhuman to criticise anything at all about such a sincere and un-self-pitying account. The other is that I have had far, far too much experience of this sort of thing, including my beloved sister dying of cancer in very similar circumstances. Objective analysis is therefore very difficult and, to be honest, far too painful, but as a brief personal perspective:

A lot of the book is readable, thoughtful and touching. I didn't find all of it brilliant - having terminal cancer does not automatically grant someone superhuman wisdom - but Kate Gross was already a thoughtful, intelligent woman before her cancer and she offers some very good reflections and insights. One section that I thought was especially good was the brief passage about what Kate wanted from people supporting her. She acknowledges that people often don't know what to do and lays out very frank and sensible rules and advice. Examples include: offer help, then "offer again in six months time because the chances are that that is the point at which everyone else will have stopped offering help", or "Remember this is not about *you*. The point is not to burnish your halo, but to help." Oh, yes.

She also says things I don't agree with, like "There's really nothing you can say that will make things worse, after all." Kate plainly didn't hear some of the presumably well-intentioned but crass, stupid and deeply upsetting things which were said to my sister, but there is a good deal of very good stuff here about a variety of things in life and in death and there's bound to be a difference of view occasionally.

My overall verdict is that this is well worth reading. It's nothing like some of the self-indulgent misery memoirs which have been published: it's well written, thoughtful and offers some important insights. Recommended.
