indescribably funny

I'm the wrong demographic for this book, but I do appreciate spectacularly witty and scintillating prose with unendurably hilarious dry irony, peppered with even funnier erudite irrelevancies, and if Douglas Adams had been engaged to write a book for teenage girls, this would have been it. I can bestow no higher praise. (I received this book from netgalley in exchange for nothing whatever. I am genuinely insanely enamoured of this author's wit, intellect, and infallibly pitch-perfect use of language.)

Time for the Geeks to Rise

Being a geek can be a burden sometimes and the worst thing is that we can't help it, that's who we are. We are the ones born with facts swirling around in our heads, the ones that were born without 20/20 vision, the ones that have no sense of style and we would rather sit and read a book and study than learn the techniques of make-up and beauty. The thing is that more often than not we are comfortable in being "The Geek" , it's how other people choose to use that stereotype to bully us that really gets our knickers in a twist and our smile turned upside down. With Holly Smale's new novel "Geek Girl" , it shows readers that it is time for the Geeks to stand up and stop being labelled as Meeks . Geek Girl tells the tale of 15 yr old Harriet Manners and how a fashion-trip in which she didn't even want to go on turned out to be the turning point of her life as she of all people is spotted by a modelling agency and asked to become the face of a major brand. Read in Geek Girl as Harriet's life is swooped up into the world of modelling, fashion and beauty . The one major thing that I loved about this novel is that they didn't go for the over pretty girl which was her best friend Nat and the author didn't change Harriet's personality at all even when she was doing the shows - she was still her geeky self with her knowledge of random facts blurting all over the place.
This is a fun teen read and fans of Kody Keplinger's The DUFF will enjoy this novel.

Choosey Choosers Choose Harriet Manners

Sly, cheerful and charmingly funny, the Geek Girl series fits in perfectly between Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicolson and Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones. Georgia Nicolson seems more like a "real" teenager and Bridget Jones is a more adult version of such teen characters, and both can be achingly funny and touching. But, for bigger than life antics and zesty good humor I'm happy to turn to Harriet Manners.
The plots turn more or less on Harriet's unlikely modeling career and are fine and entertaining, but that's not what attracts or holds the reader's interest. The plots are purely devices that allow us to travel along with Harriet as she navigates, in her own unique way, the minefield that is teen life. The drama, the exaggeration, the vulnerability, the hilarious complications - it's all there and it's all related with such unflappable spirit and enthusiasm for life that one can't help but be swept along.
"Geek Girl" was supposed to be the first book in a trilogy, but it was so wildly successful in the U,K, and so loaded up with awards, that the trilogy has now been expanded to a planned six volume series, (of which four have been published). The rave welcome is absolutely justified and Harriet Manners is, to my mind, the reigning queen of teen rom-com. A very happy find.
