indescribably funny

I'm the wrong demographic for this book, but I do appreciate spectacularly witty and scintillating prose with unendurably hilarious dry irony, peppered with even funnier erudite irrelevancies, and if Douglas Adams had been engaged to write a book for teenage girls, this would have been it. I can bestow no higher praise. (I received this book from netgalley in exchange for nothing whatever. I am genuinely insanely enamoured of this author's wit, intellect, and infallibly pitch-perfect use of language.)

Time for the Geeks to Rise

Being a geek can be a burden sometimes and the worst thing is that we can't help it, that's who we are. We are the ones born with facts swirling around in our heads, the ones that were born without 20/20 vision, the ones that have no sense of style and we would rather sit and read a book and study than learn the techniques of make-up and beauty. The thing is that more often than not we are comfortable in being "The Geek" , it's how other people choose to use that stereotype to bully us that really gets our knickers in a twist and our smile turned upside down. With Holly Smale's new novel "Geek Girl" , it shows readers that it is time for the Geeks to stand up and stop being labelled as Meeks . Geek Girl tells the tale of 15 yr old Harriet Manners and how a fashion-trip in which she didn't even want to go on turned out to be the turning point of her life as she of all people is spotted by a modelling agency and asked to become the face of a major brand. Read in Geek Girl as Harriet's life is swooped up into the world of modelling, fashion and beauty . The one major thing that I loved about this novel is that they didn't go for the over pretty girl which was her best friend Nat and the author didn't change Harriet's personality at all even when she was doing the shows - she was still her geeky self with her knowledge of random facts blurting all over the place.
This is a fun teen read and fans of Kody Keplinger's The DUFF will enjoy this novel.

Choosey Choosers Choose Harriet Manners

Sly, cheerful and charmingly funny, the Geek Girl series fits in perfectly between Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicolson and Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones. Georgia Nicolson seems more like a "real" teenager and Bridget Jones is a more adult version of such teen characters, and both can be achingly funny and touching. But, for bigger than life antics and zesty good humor I'm happy to turn to Harriet Manners.

The plots turn more or less on Harriet's unlikely modeling career and are fine and entertaining, but that's not what attracts or holds the reader's interest. The plots are purely devices that allow us to travel along with Harriet as she navigates, in her own unique way, the minefield that is teen life. The drama, the exaggeration, the vulnerability, the hilarious complications - it's all there and it's all related with such unflappable spirit and enthusiasm for life that one can't help but be swept along.

"Geek Girl" was supposed to be the first book in a trilogy, but it was so wildly successful in the U,K, and so loaded up with awards, that the trilogy has now been expanded to a planned six volume series, (of which four have been published). The rave welcome is absolutely justified and Harriet Manners is, to my mind, the reigning queen of teen rom-com. A very happy find.

A Dark Sexual Erotica that keeps you wanting more

I have really had a love/hate relationship with this series. I love how Primula Bond is a fabulous story teller she grabs you right from the beginning and hooks you for the rest of the book even if it isn't really something that you think is "real" life. This book was WAY out there for myself but I continued to read on and really enjoyed this book. I am looking forward to the final installment of the Unbreakable Trilogy now that I am fully invested in the story line and I want to know what happens to Gustav & Serena. Bond really makes you feel part of the action and you feel for the characters. Gustav in this book is opening up more to the relationship with Serena but still is very mysterious and handsome.

This book picks up from where we left off in book one learning about the Levi brothers dark secrets and is very dark and heavy. The beginning has a lot of dialog but you learn all about Gustav's brother Pierre who we met at the end of book #1. I did find this a bit long and was starting to think this book was going to be more dialog than story but it got moving and had me interested in seeing where it was heading.

Serena and Gustav take their relationship to a whole new level and learn about trusting each other while Gustav gave Serena the okay to explore her sexuality. It seemed like everywhere Serena turned she was met with temptation, exploration and lust. Pierre wasn't my favorite character in this book and I was hoping to see a happy ending for Gustav and Serena. This is definitely a roller coaster storyline but it is heavy on the sexual exploring, along with deception and manipulation. To be able to follow this storyline you do need to read the first book as they are not stand alone.

Excellent Prose, Great Story

This is the sequel to The Silver Chain and gives us more of the relationship between Serena and Gustav as they move from their London base to New York. New York is also where Pierre Levi, Gustav’s long estranged brother, lives and Gustav and Pierre make careful overtures to reestablish their relationship.

Serena and Gustav are great together. Serena continues with her voyeur tendencies and her instincts get her in trouble sometimes when she acts before thinking. She is in hot demand as a photographer and part of this story is about her experimenting as well as the developing relationship between the two brothers.

The start of this story was a bit jarring with several flashbacks, but once the action went back to real time my interest was engaged by the unfolding drama between the brothers and also Serena’s antics. Gustav’s past drove the plot in the first book and this continues in the sequel, although we learn new facts and move forward with the characters. The Levi past definitely comes back to bite Serena in the butt. I saw the end of the story coming, and it will be interesting to learn what happens next.

I like Serena as a character. She’s young and at times impulsive but her adventurous side makes me smile. In contrast Gustav is the strong man at her side who gives Serena room to explore. There is a part of the plot where Serena missteps in her thoughts, and I worried a little for her and Gustav. I’m thinking that the repercussions from this plot line will come out in the next book.

I enjoyed revisiting Serena and Gustav in The Golden Locket and recommend this series. Readers should note that the books should be read in order for maximum enjoyment. Like The Silver Chain, The Golden Locket ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

THE GOLDEN LOCKET is the second instalment in Primula Bond’s contemporary, adult erotica series focusing on twenty year old photographer Serena Folkes and billionaire recluse Gustav Levi. If you have ever watched the Tom Cruise movie-Eyes Wide Shut-there is a similarity to much of the storyline premise.

Following shortly after the events of The Silver Chain where Gustav comes face to face with the brother he has not seen in five years, Gustav will embark on a soul searching and revealing promise to reunite with his brother Pierre. Pierre and Gustav’s adult history together is fraught with betrayal, lies, accusations and misunderstanding which is dramatically different from their early years. Gustav is still a dark and tortured soul whose love for his brother is tempered by a betrayal he considers unforgivable but a betrayal where he believes his brother was used as a pawn in a game of deceit and revenge.

The relationship between Gustav and Serena is sensual, daring, dark and passionate but Gustav’s past life in the BDSM scene threatens the building relationship when friends and acquaintances want more from Serena than either she or Gustav are willing to accept. Gustav pulls Serena into a lifestyle she knew nothing about and in return will discover that he is having a hard time accepting that Serena is a willing participant in a different game. As Serena’s career begins to flourish she is drawn into a web of seduction and danger with every job opportunity.

Pierre Levi is a man possessed. He wants what his brother has-success, wealth and love- and he will go about capturing it all even the woman who is not his to possess.

The storyline is darker and more sexually erotic than The Silver Chain. Primula draws the reader into a world of domination and submission; betrayal and trust; manipulation and degradation. Although all of the people are willing participants, there are varying degrees of acceptance and in this a line was crossed on a couple of occasions.

The erotic and sexual content is sensual between Serena and Gustav but becomes aggressive and demanding when other people become involved. Our couple are willing to experiment and consider all of the options but it was uncomfortable at times when our heroine Serena appeared to be pushed into situations where she had very little control or say. This was not the fault of her lover but of other people taking advantage of her naivety, youth and connections to Gustav and his dark and dangerous world.

Primula Bond has written a storyline about two tortured souls-brothers-who have fallen victim to the same woman time and time again. There is an odd pull between Gustav and Pierre as it involves said woman, but the pull towards Serena may be the only thing that saves both men in the end. Serena is the woman to pull Gustav back from the edge but Pierre is a man looking for someone to pull him back.

Wallace has created an interesting world to set her story in and the political machinations make for a strong plot ... unique historical fantasy

A unique historical fantasy set in what appears to be an alternative early modern France, this novel concerns the travels of young Devin, a scholar-in-training who wants to collect the oral histories of the provinces despite the fact that they're banned from the official history of the land of Llise. Add to that the fact that Devin's the son of Llise's ruler, and you get a complicated political conspiracy as well as an interesting investigation of the power dynamics surrounding literacy v. oral culture. I liked the fact that Devin's a bookworm instead of a swashbuckling hero, and I appreciated how the author wove the oral materials through the story. Fantasy elements are kept fairly light until midway through the book, when there's a startling insertion that I don't want to give away. All in all, this was an original and surprising book, one that will appeal to readers of historical fantasy who prefer a somewhat quieter, more contemplative story than the norm.

This was an excellent book. I didn't want to put the book down the whole time I was reading it. The book was very well written. I especially enjoyed the suspense of the last couple chapters. Can not wait until the next book. Great work Nancy!!

About the Author
Eric Rucker Eddison was born in Adel, England, in 1882. His parents encouraged his spirited imagination. Boyhood days spent reading and adventuring in the northern English countryside with his constant companion, Arthur Ransome, provided rich material for his novels. Eddison was twice honoured, receiving the Order of St. Michael and St. George (1924) and the Order of the Bath (1929) for public service with the Board of Trade. His writings include the first complete translation of the Icelandic epic, Egil's Saga; the novels The Worm Oroboros and Stybiorn the Strong; and the trilogy Zimiamvia, including Mistress of Mistresses, A Fish Dinner in Memison, and the final book, The Mezentian Gate, which was left unfinished when he died suddenly of a stroke in 1945.

Re: what a great mini-series this would make

I read E.R. Eddison's books many years ago, but they are still vivid in my memory. I loved the way the author could write Elizabethan dialogue as if he had lunch with Shakespeare every day. The characters were so colorful, the scenes richly painted, and the strange, time-and-space-roving Lessingham had another life here in this other Europe, that seems to me now like something Tolkien might have wanted for his Fifth Age of Middle Earth.

I yearned for years that someone would make a film or films of The Lord of the Rings. I grew old waiting, but then it happened. Maybe someday there will be a Worm Ouroboros or a Mistress of Mistresses. I know the language would have to be made more simple and most of the philosophy dumped, but to see Lord Gro, of Ouroboros, doomed always to be a traitor, come to his end, or that grand villain of Mistresses, the Vicar of Rerek take time out from his plotting to be 'a washing of his cursed dogs' in his casstle yard, would be a mad treat.

Winston Chruchill once said that schoolboys should be allowed to study Latin as a reward, and Greek as a treat. Readers with imagination and an appreciation for language should be made lighter nad dizzy with the richness of Eddison's prose.

The arrogance of genius

king wolf offers a first review of this work with the kind of arrogance that may put off a potential reader. However, its an arrogance that Eddison himself would doubtless admire. The review, for all its naked boasts, simply tells the truth. Eddison is brilliant with a brilliance that shines from many angles, and with a light that at once terrifies and appalls

That Eddison is not studied at high levels of education, that he is barely read and marginalised, is a depressing condemnation of the literary world. I feel personally fortunate I was exposed to Eddison's work as a youth. Lucky old me.

Perfection in romantic fantasy

This is a book of unearthly beauty. While I felt that Eddison's THE WORM OUROBOROS was somewhat on the light side, MISTRESS OF MISTRESSES captures the vision of romantic heroism, both in its peaks of joyful experience and its dark ambiguity. It is almost impossible to describe rapture in such a way as to actually evoke it in the reader---Eddison does this not once but several times. Yet looming behind the pleasures of flesh and spirit is a wintry grandeur, a coldness of sheer height and a thanatosis that makes one shiver.
The book begins and ends with death and the plot is standard. There is no character development---the characters are (sometimes literally) archetypes. It is not really a story. It is a vision---a painting that one would gaze at for hours. The value of this book lies in the strength of that vision and the beauty with which it is portrayed.

It had it's moments - audiobook

So far, there is only one review on Audible's UK site - nothing on the US site. It looks like either the title is too off-putting, or no-one has the courage to admit having written/read/narrated/listened to this book. The author is hiding under the pseudonym of Rufus Lodge and the British narrator, Richard E Grant is actually Richard Esterhuysen from Swaziland (a small land-locked country in Southern Africa). Thank goodness my reviews are also under a nom-de-plume.

It was interesting and informative at times, peppered with amusing anecdotes and a fair amount of historical background. The origins of some of the F-bomb's more embellished cousins as well as how the "word" has become almost commonplace, particularly as part of the 60s counterculture, made it a good filler. Authors such as the elusive JD Salinger, Norman Mailer and notables like Allen Ginsberg and John Lennon were also included, among others. There was also a section on acronyms, some of which elicited a smile. No spoiler, but the title word itself is an acronym.

Where it failed was that it went off topic. In so doing, Rufus Lodge turned it into a tedious swear-fest by including almost every other obscenity. I skimmed these sections.

Narrator Richard E Grant is a joy to listen to. His timbre, pace and versatilty with numerous accents is absolutely delightful. In any one else's hands, I may not have stayed the distance. I wish he would spread his wings to include more diverse material, as the titles in his repertoire don't appeal. His narration of Roald Dahl short stories and Aesop's fables will captivate younger listeners.

At 200 pages/5 1/2 hours this is a quick, undemanding read which will provide a few "I didn't know that!" or "Did you know?" snippets for the useless-trivia junkie.

Overall I am giving it 3 stars - 2 for content and 5 for narration.

I am a 6-year old at heart. I saw this book and started giggling. Must possess! So even though I never use this word (well, once out loud, but it was soooo worth it!) I started reading. I didn't know that the word is centuries old. I didn't know that there were so many ways to use it.

If you have a silly sense of humor, or use this word a lot and want to know other ways to use it, this is fun. And brings out the inner grade-schooler.
