a heartwarming festive read. Really enjoyable

If you are looking for a quick, festive, enjoyable read over the holiday period then this one will tick the boxes. The Kiss Before Christmas was the first book I have read by this author and I really liked her style. I'll definitely be looking at her other books.
Dory was a spunky character, a Brit in New York, working for a douche of a boss, who bribes her with the promise of a ticket home to see her family, if she pretends to be his girlfriend in front of his family for 3 days. When Dory meets Lucas, Tyler's brother, she realises that this plan may not be as easy as she first thought.
Dory was someone you could easily relate to and I admired the way she stood up to Tyler and also how she coped with his parents and their trappings. Lucas was so different from his brother and I really fell for Lucas from the beginning. There was just something about him that made you feel drawn to him. He was easy-going and charming, personable and alluring. I loved how the romance of their relationship developed, a slow burn, smoldering amongst lies and family drama.
Even though this was a short novella, I didn't want to put it down. I found that I easily slotted into the characters story and was able to form opinions about the characters straight away. At no time did I feel rushed and we were given enough about the characters for the story to flow easily and effortlessly. The story was well written and I really liked how the author tied everything up at the end. It was perfect for me and I would love to read a sequel to see where these characters went next. Sometimes novellas can seem like a sampler but I didn't ever get this feeling. I was engaged from start to finish.

When Dory McKenzie left her family and her life in Liverpool behind for New York, she thought that she was going to be living the dream. With a high-powered job, a gorgeous fiance and a lifestyle that would have made Carrie Bradshaw green with envy, Dory thought that life couldn’t possible get any better for her – until she lost everything in one fell swoop. The fabulous job had fallen through, her fiance had broken her heart and she had been reduced to living in a dreary shoe box of a flat and working as a lowly PA for Tyler Alexander, one of the richest and most successful men in New York. As if coping with loneliness and heartbreak wasn’t bad enough, Dory has to cope with the knowledge that she’s about to spend the festive season all by herself, as she doesn’t have the money to make the journey back home to Liverpool to spend Christmas with her family, whom she’s missing like mad. With no other option but to walk away from it all, Lucas had severed all ties with his old life and now spends his time living a fulfilling life on his farm. The last thing he feels like doing is going back to the family home and spending Christmas gritting his teeth and trying not to let his mother’s wicked barbs get to him. Like him, Dory is an outsider. She’s outspoken, feisty, funny and has managed to breach the walls he had built around himself. The Kiss Before Christmas is a fantastic story that I devoured in a single sitting. Sophie Pembroke creates characters that are impossible not to love and care about. Dory and Lucas are terrific characters. I loved spunky, no-nonsense Dory, who had a heart of gold and a wicked sense of humour and Lucas was an intelligent, smart and sexy hero I defy anyone not to fall madly in love with.
Heart-warming, hilarious and simply irresistible, The Kiss Before Christmas continues to affirm Sophie Pembroke’s standing as one of romantic fiction’s fastest rising stars!

Perfect Hallmark-esque Christmas story!

What a wonderful story! I’m always a bit hesitant about novellas, I think that it is often hard for authors to produce a high quality, full story in just a few pages, but Miss Pembroke did an amazing job! I did not want to put this book down for a second!
I loved Dory, and how wonderfully she handled herself with the illustrious Alexander family in all of their snobbery. I also appreciated how she did not hesitate to put her boss in his place, and followed her conscience, and heart, even when difficult ultimatums were placed on the table.
If you love a good Hallmark Christmas movie, and are looking for a quick read that will warm you up as deliciously as a cup of hot cocoa, give The Kiss Before Christmas a try!
