I received some sample Busy Ant materials and was very impressed, yet again the resources were of high quality and supports children's understanding in an engaging way. The resources matched the national curriculum really well and have clear progression across units of work. The lessons have opportunities to be differentiated in 5 ways and the units are flexible and give teachers the opportunities to be creative. I am extremely impressed with the online planning tool and am really looking forward to implementing this scheme of work across years 3 and 4 and then into years 1 and 5 next year. About the Author
Dr Jeanette A. Mumford is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Trained in biostatistics, her research has focused on the development and characterisation of new methods for statistical modeling and analysis of fMRI data. Her work has examined the impact of different group modeling strategies and developed new tools for modeling network structure in resting-state fMRI data. She is the developer of the fmriPower software package, which provides power analysis tools for fMRI data.

Peter Clarke specialises in medieval religious history, in particular the papacy and canon law. He is author of the monograph The Interdict in the Thirteenth Century: A Question of Collective Guilt (2007) and of numerous articles. His most recent key publication (co-edited with Patrick N. R. Zutshi) is Supplications from England and Wales in the Registers of the Apostolic Penitentiary, 1410 1503, 3 volumes, Canterbury and York Society Series 103-105 (2013 15). He has also co-edited volumes 45-49 in the series Studies in Church History and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Not for the faint of heart...

George R. R. Martin crafted a bone-chilling, high fantasy story; I'm angry with myself for hopping on the bandwagon so late.
To pretty much give you the general idea about what these books are about:

"'Always keep your foes confused. If they are never certain who you are or what you want, they cannot know what you are like to do next. Sometimes the best way to baffle them is to make moves that have no purpose, or even seem to work against you. Remember that when you come to play the game.'
'What...what game?'
'The only game. The game of thrones.'"

The books — at times — are not a nice read: there’s rape, incest, prostitution, slavery and gore in here. Yes, not a very nice series… but it’s realistic in a way like the middle ages. A Song of Ice and Fire has that atmosphere.

There are also daring knights with shinning amour and swords and hilarious banters; there are winters too cold and wars too heart-wrenching. The books may be terribly long and sometimes a slow read, but they're really fun as well as adventurous ones. Fantasy is the best genre to read to get lost in another world entirely different from our own — especially the long fantasies since one could savour it a little more… A Song of Ice and Fire is one of those long fantasies people should read.

Cost-effective, but a stupid idea putting 5 entire novels into one eBook

I wanted to read the Song of Ice and Fire series as an eBook on my iPad, and this set was the most cost-effective means of getting the 5 books, so I bought it. I won't comment on the books themselves at this stage because I'm only 10% of the way through the second book, except to say that I was inspired to buy the novels after watching Seasons 1 and 2 of HBO's Game of Thrones television series.

The blurb for this ebook does not tell you that what you will receive (unless it has since been changed) is the content of 5 books packaged into one single eBook file. This has got to be one of the most most bone-headed decisions I have come across in a long while. I see one icon in my kindle reader that encompasses all five books. So I don't see the covers of the individual books as depicted on the paperbacks.

Secondly, when you have an ebook that is nearly 5,000 pages long, things like trying to scroll to a particular page is not very accurate, and so on. It also means that if I want the eBook on my iPhone, I have to have the entire 5,000 pages on the phone etc.

I realise on the one hand my gripe is not that big a deal, but on the other hand it was very frustrating to expect one thing and receive another. The reality is that the publisher has specifically had to go to the trouble of concatenating these books into one eBook rather than just supplying the ebooks separately as you would get if you bought them separately. And I can think of no good reason for doing this.

In the end, I discovered by chance that Amazon allows you to get a refund on your ebooks within 7 days of purchase, so I refunded the combined set and bought the eBooks individually. Yes it cost a little more but at least I now have a more manageable collection.

Wow. Got this outstanding book as a gift for a grandson about to turn 13. I may just keep it for myself! Excellent photographs of cars that fascinate are complemented by equally good narratives about the vehicles. An excellent value.

Great book, disgusting title.

My 1.5 year old daughter loves cars and loves this book. We keep flipping through pages and looking at all the awesome cars. Thankfully she is not at the age yet where she can read and get the message that somehow this book is not meant for her.

If you haven't seen the video of the "Like a girl" campaign you should. [...] Girls start out equal. Over the years they grow up, the imbibe the message that is bombarded at them from society via all angles that somehow girls are weaker and cannot have interests in things like "car" which is obviously a boy thing. Due to such messages, we have very low number of women in STEM professions like engineering. This book's title directly feeds into such stereotypes that impact our future generations.

Coco Moodysson was born in Stockholm in 1970. For many years she studied to become a sign language interpreter but in 1998 she dropped out and started drawing comics. Coco lives in Malmö with her husband and their three children.

Someone Out There

When successful divorce lawyer Laura Maxwell suffers a couple of strange, seemingly unconnected accidents she starts to believe that someone is out to kill her. Who could it be? She is a success at her job and is bound to have ruffled more than a few feathers there over the years, but enough for someone to try and kill her? There are a number of suspects in this page turner of a tense psychological thriller which I found quite hard to put down.

I was thoroughly enjoying this book and had it pegged as a solid four star read until about two thirds of the way through when I hit the “OMG moment” which ramped it all the way up to five stars. I love it when you get a good jaw dropping moment that opens up a whole avenue of possibilities that you had never even considered before.

I really liked Laura. She is successful, shows integrity and compassion. She is just an all round nice person who I could really get behind. I desperately wanted to know more about her and what was going to happen to her.

This is a book stuffed with tension, drama, betrayals, obsession and revenge which moves at a really good pace. Despite the darkness of the story, it is extremely easy to read with the words just jumping off the page at you. I found it so hard to put down, the kindle went everywhere with me – and I really do mean “everywhere”. Thanks to the publisher for the review copy.

Laura is a top divorce lawyer working in a firm.
Sometimes she is used to conflict, but not this...

It starts off with a high pitch lead into something where Laura is in fear. The first chapter really takes off and takes your attention to the hilt.

My mind plays guessing games!!!

Laura's private life seems to have it all. A husband who adores her and she him, lovely home, good jobs, no money worries, communication great between them.
But is any marriage 'perfect'?
We all have our flaws.

Accidents start to happen, Laura feels she is being put in danger. But she cannot go to the police without firm evidence, she knows how things works.

Laura is in fear of her life, it takes over her work, her marriage.
Here starts the flaws, the cracks start to show, then they widen out.

Its a very intense read AND its a DEBUT novel.

I have to say, I have read some awesome DEBUT books this year and outstanding, this one is among them.

For debut novels this year so far [and bear in mind its only May!] this is in my top 5.

The twist in this came towards the end, Catherine Hunt really kept me guessing, I had the choice of 2 culprits.

Another angle on this is, how would like to work for a Boss who wants you to cover things up in paperwork?

Just a thought? as it happens within the workforce that Laura works at, how does she cope with that. You will have to find out.

A remarkable first book I cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next.
She will have to match this or excel

I read three books a week. I'm gleefully retired (not cause I'm old....I won the lotto) and I do two things I promised myself. I do NOT wake to an alarm and I read to my hearts content. My choices are usually DeMille, Silva, Baldacci but I took a flyer on this. It truly was great and couldn't put it down. Amazing twist I never saw coming. Genuinely well written...heckuva story...brilliant first book. Bravo

Fine verse

It is crazy that this book should be out of print. What are publishers thinking of? The verses are a delight, though they become increasingly tragic as the book progresses - "The Sea Bell" is a devastating account of something like clinical depression, yet like many of the rest it has a strange beauty. On the surface much is easy-to-read verse, but often has subtle allusions to deep matters. Many links with "The Lord of the Rings" for those who know where to look, and, I think, an unusually personal account of Tolkien's own struggles to find beauty, wonder and enchantment in the bleak modern world - it is only coincidence that "The Sea Bell" is the only one of his major works for publication written in the first person?

I was so sad to see that this book was out of print. I really wanted to read it! But, I think I've found it! It's in a book called "The Tolkien Reader". (here on Amazon they also call it "A Tolkien Reader") The book includes "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil", "Farmer Giles of Ham" and "On Fairy Stories". Enjoy! : )

Tolkien's Best Poetry

Not to many people regard Tolkien as a serious poet: No doubt this is largely the result of the fact that our culture is still gestating the enormous influence his work has had upon it. Another (obvious) reason is that critics, such as Edmund Wilson, simply don't like Tolkien and would like him permanently relegated to the realm of childhood literature.-This thin book of verse,in its spare sixteen poems, is evidence to the contrary. They owe a great deal to Shelley (whom many would also like to relegate to some not quite Literary with a capital "L" realm.) -In fact, parts of "The Sea Bell," by far the best poem in the book, can almost be transliterated line-by-line from a stanza in Shelley's "The Revolt of Islam." -To give an idea of the piquancy of the book's best poems, the last poem in this little book (not inappropriately titled "The Last Ship") concerns a fair maiden wishing to escape the bonds of mortality in an Elven boat passing in the early morning: "A sudden music came to her came, as she stood there gleaming." But, alas, of course,though she dares one step, her mortality bars her from such an escape, "...then deep in clay her feet sank and she halted staring."-Exquisite. Aside from the sheer beauty of such poems, there are obviously deeper themes here than those to be found in nursery rhymes. And, for Heaven's sake, compare it to the grating, nonsensical ranting that has come to pass for sophisticated poetry nowadays!-Why is this book not in print?!?

Compared to the Random House Crossword dictionary, Bradford's is a total disappointment. Could be because it was intended for a UK audience, a little detail I must have missed ordering it. Choose Random House instead!!

a heartwarming festive read. Really enjoyable

If you are looking for a quick, festive, enjoyable read over the holiday period then this one will tick the boxes. The Kiss Before Christmas was the first book I have read by this author and I really liked her style. I'll definitely be looking at her other books.

Dory was a spunky character, a Brit in New York, working for a douche of a boss, who bribes her with the promise of a ticket home to see her family, if she pretends to be his girlfriend in front of his family for 3 days. When Dory meets Lucas, Tyler's brother, she realises that this plan may not be as easy as she first thought.

Dory was someone you could easily relate to and I admired the way she stood up to Tyler and also how she coped with his parents and their trappings. Lucas was so different from his brother and I really fell for Lucas from the beginning. There was just something about him that made you feel drawn to him. He was easy-going and charming, personable and alluring. I loved how the romance of their relationship developed, a slow burn, smoldering amongst lies and family drama.

Even though this was a short novella, I didn't want to put it down. I found that I easily slotted into the characters story and was able to form opinions about the characters straight away. At no time did I feel rushed and we were given enough about the characters for the story to flow easily and effortlessly. The story was well written and I really liked how the author tied everything up at the end. It was perfect for me and I would love to read a sequel to see where these characters went next. Sometimes novellas can seem like a sampler but I didn't ever get this feeling. I was engaged from start to finish.

A heart-warming novella packed with warmth, magic and charm, The Kiss Before Christmas is a spellbinding contemporary romance that will tug at your heartstrings and make you laugh out loud from the talented Sophie Pembroke!

When Dory McKenzie left her family and her life in Liverpool behind for New York, she thought that she was going to be living the dream. With a high-powered job, a gorgeous fiance and a lifestyle that would have made Carrie Bradshaw green with envy, Dory thought that life couldn’t possible get any better for her – until she lost everything in one fell swoop. The fabulous job had fallen through, her fiance had broken her heart and she had been reduced to living in a dreary shoe box of a flat and working as a lowly PA for Tyler Alexander, one of the richest and most successful men in New York. As if coping with loneliness and heartbreak wasn’t bad enough, Dory has to cope with the knowledge that she’s about to spend the festive season all by herself, as she doesn’t have the money to make the journey back home to Liverpool to spend Christmas with her family, whom she’s missing like mad. Dory would do absolutely anything to spend Christmas with her nearest and dearest, so when her boss tells her that he’ll give her the money to spend New Year with her family, Dory is elated. However, there’s a catch: Tyler will give her the money, only if she pretends to be his girlfriend for the holidays. Dory accepts, but little does she realise that her life is about to get more complicated than she ever imagined….

Lucas Alexander is dreading Christmas. As the eldest son of the distinguished Alexander family, Lucas had been set to inherit the duties and responsibilities of running the Alexander estate. However, Lucas had found the shackles of running the high-powered international conglomerates that had made his family a fortune and all the posturing and pomposity of New York high society unbearable. With no other option but to walk away from it all, Lucas had severed all ties with his old life and now spends his time living a fulfilling life on his farm. The last thing he feels like doing is going back to the family home and spending Christmas gritting his teeth and trying not to let his mother’s wicked barbs get to him. But things begin to look up when he meets his brother’s intriguing fiancee, Dory Mackenzie…

Like him, Dory is an outsider. She’s outspoken, feisty, funny and has managed to breach the walls he had built around himself. She doesn’t belong in the claustrophobic environment of his parents’ mausoleum – and neither does she belong with Tyler. Lucas is not fooled by his brother’s relationship with Dory and he will not rest until he uncovers the secret that the two of them are hiding.

Thrown together by the magic of Christmas, Dory and Lucas soon find themselves getting closer. But not wanting to get rumbled about her deception by the man she has fallen madly in love with, will Dory end up losing Lucas because of her fake relationship with Tyler? Or will a Christmas miracle give her everything she has ever wanted?

The Kiss Before Christmas is a fantastic story that I devoured in a single sitting. Sophie Pembroke creates characters that are impossible not to love and care about. Dory and Lucas are terrific characters. I loved spunky, no-nonsense Dory, who had a heart of gold and a wicked sense of humour and Lucas was an intelligent, smart and sexy hero I defy anyone not to fall madly in love with.

Heart-warming, hilarious and simply irresistible, The Kiss Before Christmas continues to affirm Sophie Pembroke’s standing as one of romantic fiction’s fastest rising stars!

Perfect Hallmark-esque Christmas story!

What a wonderful story! I’m always a bit hesitant about novellas, I think that it is often hard for authors to produce a high quality, full story in just a few pages, but Miss Pembroke did an amazing job! I did not want to put this book down for a second!
I loved Dory, and how wonderfully she handled herself with the illustrious Alexander family in all of their snobbery. I also appreciated how she did not hesitate to put her boss in his place, and followed her conscience, and heart, even when difficult ultimatums were placed on the table.
If you love a good Hallmark Christmas movie, and are looking for a quick read that will warm you up as deliciously as a cup of hot cocoa, give The Kiss Before Christmas a try!

This book is helpful as a quick reference for some of the better known clans. I wouldn't consider it a great all around book but worth adding to your library if clan history is something you're interested in. It's a fun read and nice to have on hand.
