Speaking Volumes Christian Book of the Year 2016

In 1992, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow was enjoying a pint with his brother when he got an idea that would change his life – and radically change the lives of others.

After watching a news bulletin about war-torn Bosnia, the two brothers agreed to take a week’s hiatus from work to help.

What neither of them expected is that what began as a one-time road trip in a beaten-up Landrover rapidly grew to become Magnus’s life’s work – leading him to leave his job, sell his house and direct all his efforts to feeding thousands of the world’s poorest children.

Magnus retells how a series of miraculous circumstances and an overwhelming display of love from those around him led to the creation of Mary’s Meals; an organisation that could hold the key to eradicating child hunger altogether. This humble, heart-warming yet powerful story has never been more relevant in our society of plenty and privilege. It will open your eyes to the extraordinary impact that one person can make.

About the Author

Magnus started his career as a Salmon farmer in rural Argyll, but when the Balkan conflict began, he and his brother were so moved by the scenes on television that they gathered a jeep-load of aid and joined a convoy travelling to Bosnia to distribute it. On his return home, Magnus expected to resume his job, however, he came back to discover that the public had carried on donating and instead he continued organising and distributing aid. In 2002 his work led him to Malawi, where he met a family whose situation would alter the course of his work, and Mary’s Meals was born.

Mandatory Reading For Politicians in Washington!
By T. E. Salapatek
I read many books, but it is a rare one that I can’t put down. I intended to read only the Prologue of this one, but upon reading it --- and after my tears stopped --- I had to continue it to the end.
Magnus Barrow writes this book in his company office, a 100-year old, lopsided, corrugated-iron shed at the back of his dad’s house. The story of his charity, Mary’s Meals, starts when as a young man he sees the news about a war in Yugoslavia, the slaughter of men, raping of their wives and kids, and their impending starvation. His reaction is to buy a used Land Rover, load it with food, and drive from Scotland across Europe to feed those war refugees. His next trip is with a convoy of trucks. Over time he delivers needed supplies to hospitals, as bombs fall around him. And he hears of starvation in Malawi, Africa. Visiting there he meets a woman whose husband died of Aids, as she soon will, and her six starving children. He takes their picture. It hangs on his office wall. It’s in this book. And he begins delivering food to Malawi, with two stipulations: 1) the kids will be fed, for most their only meal of the day, in school, and 2) the villagers must prepare it.
Today 25% of the school children in Malawi (and in many other countries) get their only meal, in school, from Mary’s Meals --- Mary being the name given to one of their large food-hauling trucks. Mary’s Meals feeds over one million children, each day! Much of this book resonated with me, including the author’s visit to Medjugorje, and his commitment there which later motivated his actions, as mine did me.
I recently a story read about a very rich man who said: “Despite all my money, there’s nothing I can do.” I read about a very intelligent woman who said: “Despite all my wisdom, there’s nothing I can do.” In fact, there were dozens of these men and women pictured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, sitting on the House of Representative’s floor --- for this great photo op. Woe is us! Give us more power so we can do something!
And I thought of Magnus, who saw something that needed to be done, and he went out and got a used truck ---- and did it.

The Art of the Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the publication of The Lord of the Rings, a sumptuous full-colour art book containing the complete collection of almost 200 sketches, drawings, paintings and maps by J.R.R. Tolkien.

As he wrote The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien’s mental pictures often found expression in drawing, from rough sketches made within the manuscript to more finished illustrations. Only a few of these were meant for publication; most were aids to help Tolkien conceive his complex story and keep it consistent. Many do not illustrate the final text, but represent moments of creation, illuminating Tolkien’s process of writing and design. In addition to pictorial sketches, numerous maps follow the development of the Shire and the larger landscape of Middle-earth, while inscriptions in runes and Elvish script, and ‘facsimile’ leaves from the burned and blood-stained Book of Mazarbul, support Tolkien’s pose as an ‘editor’ or ‘translator’ of ancient records.

The Art of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien collects these drawings, inscriptions, maps, and plans in one deluxe volume. More than 180 images are included, all of them printed in colour from high-quality scans and photographs, more than half not previously published. Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, two of the world’s leading Tolkien scholars, have edited the book and provide an expert introduction and comments. Readers who have enjoyed The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, with which the new book is uniform, will find much of interest also in The Art of The Lord of the Rings.

Wonderful and Charming
By Apple
This book is excellent for a true Tolkien fan! If you want a deeper look into the mind of our favorite author, this book presents that.
The images are indeed all high quality - unlike some books who promise quality but deliver certain pages full of pixels and disappointment.

This book is not as artistic as it is descriptive; the images which are true illustrations are sparse when compared with the drawings of maps, drafts of typography, and so on. There are some gorgeous pencil and watercolor sketches, but overall this book presents many maps that allow us to get a clearer grasp of Middle Earth. Every image is discussed at some length and gives the reader an understanding of its context and timing in the writing process.

There are also some stunning little doodles described - my favorite is the rune used on the box Galadriel gave to Sam - though small, it is a joy to see these types of images.

I would highly recommend this book to any map enthusiast and anyone who would like a coffee table book to rival the nerdiest of coffee book tables!

I might not recommend this book to someone looking for a scenic art book of Middle Earth, however! It is more analytical than artistic, in my opinion.

Envisioning A Masterpiece
By John D. Cofield
J.R.R. Tolkien was a talented artist as well as a writer, and throughout his life he produced dozens of drawings and paintings, many of which display the same sense of wonder and delight that make his books so enjoyable. In the 1970s a collection of his finished work dealing with Middle-earth was published as Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien. Wayne G.Hammond and Christina Scull, who are among the most authoritative of Tolkien scholars, have already edited J.R.R. Tolkien Artist and Illustrator, which contains a wide range of his work from throughout his life; as well as The Art of The Hobbit, concentrating on the paintings and drawings he produced for his first book. The Art of the Lord of the Rings is a beautiful companion to these earlier publications and is especially valuable in that it contains many heretofore unpublished sketches and drawings that allow us to better understand how Tolkien came to create his best loved tale.

A major difference between The Art of the Lord of the Rings and earlier collections of Tolkien's art is that it contains many pieces which were never intended to be published, and indeed were meant only as aids to Tolkien's imagination as he analyzed the appropriate settings for his characters.Other works were drawn and finished by Tolkien for his own private amusement, while still others, usually rune transcriptions, were eventually to be included in the published text. Other pieces, including "pages" from the Book of Mazarbul and the "King's Letter" from the abandoned Epilogue, Tolkien also meant to include in the finished book, but were eventually left out for cost reasons. Perhaps the most important of the pieces which Tolkien never meant to be published are the many maps he produced as his story developed. Ever the reviser and perfectionist, Tolkien was always writing and rewriting his story, changing names and adding and dropping characters over many years. He realized right away that maps were essential, and he added on to and continually revised what had originally been a fairly small map until it became a cartographic giant. Then as his story expanded further more maps were needed, and they also came in for extensive editing and review. All of these maps are included here, and it is fascinating to examine them and see where Tolkien changed names, added new details, and sometimes erased. Similarly fascinating are the small sketches, some very detailed while others almost doodled, which he scribbled between the lines and along the margins of the pages of his manuscript (for which he often used discarded student papers and other ordinary communications. These were meant to help him envision his story and work out what his characters were to do next.

Some of the more finished works included here have already been published in the collections I mentioned earlier and in some of the calendars produced over the years, but "Old Man Willow," "Lothlorien in Spring," Barad-dur," "The Hill of Hobbiton" and "Rivendell" are enhanced by Hammond and Scull's careful discussions. Throughout the book Tolkien's relentless perfectionism is always on display. He created version after version of the Ring inscription, for example, before he finally developed one which was exactly right. It's that careful attention to detail that helps give Tolkien's writings their enormous appeal, and Hammond and Scull's similar dedication is evident on every page of this work. The Art of the Lord of the Rings is doubly a labor of love, first by Tolkien himself, and then by the editors. This work will immediately become an essential part of the libraries of all of us who love Middle-earth.

The long awaited companion to The Art of the Hobbit
By Stuart Dunn
The Art of The Lord of the Rings is the long-awaited companion volume to The Art of the Hobbit. The publisher kept the size of the hardcover the same (10" x 10"), which I always appreciate. There is nothing worse than having a book that belongs with another and them being different sizes! The length of this book is almost 250 pages, which is 100 pages more than The Art of the Hobbit. 250 pages is a generous plenty, but greedy Tolkien fan that I am I was hoping for close to 500 pages, since this is a trilogy after all! Also unlike its companion book, there are no fold-out pages, which I greatly appreciate, as I always felt like I was going to end up getting those pages even more folded up or worse ripping them.

Upon picking up this book, I was expecting many illustrations of Frodo, Gandalf, and Aragorn. Instead, I would say this book is more maps and runes/inscriptions than anything. That is not a complaint, merely an observation. There are images of castles and keeps and towers. But one notices that there are numerous illustrations of the inscription on the One Ring and so many maps and revisions of maps. At times, it feels like looking through a time lapsed atlas where you see the changes and evolutions of a specific area. Other times, it feels like you are flipping through a travel log and tracing the journey of the Fellowship. Pair all of these illustration with the masterful commentary by editors Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, and you have a book that makes the perfect gift for any serious Tolkien fan. Be sure to check out other books edited by them including J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator.

Our hero Ben is bored beyond belief after he is made to stay at his grandma's house. She's the boringest grandma ever: all she wants to do is to play Scrabble, and eat cabbage soup. fun and engrossing book
By Elango R
this review is by my 9 year old as this is his buy. it was a good book though the beginning is a bit boring, it has a good plot and it is also funny. if i had to rate it on 10 i would say 9, as in the middle of the book i found a very unclear part.I also don't get a part where the boys grandma gets many fake diamonds. But it was a good book which keeps your eyes glued to it throughout. An example of this is his parents love ballroom dancing but he hates it [i mean the boy] but he acts as if he likes it so that he can go to his grandmas house [he hates her in the beginning] but then his parents sign him up for a ballroom dancing competition where he wears a suit with heart designs all around it and dances like a monkey with his tail on fire. So rounding it of the boy hated his grandma and she tries to make him spend more time with her by doing a great robbery which they cannot fail. A good way to spend a sunday afternoon.

Humorous, compelling, and nicely written.
By S. Gould
My 7 year old son thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, which is funny but also touches on serious life issues around relationships and loved ones passing. In some ways it is very British (which is of particular interest to my son because he was born in England) but it should entertain and interest most children. The development of the relationship between Ben and his grandmother, and with his parents, can be enthralling for kids, and is skillfully articulated for the target age.

Great reading for a 9 year old.
By KK
My son and I absolutely loved this book. It tells the story of a boy who thinks his old Granny is boring with her smelly Cabbage soup and Scrabble play and how their relationship develops throughout the story. The story covers many issues which are sometimes uncomfortable but good learning for children who may otherwise come from great upbringings. One of which is his somewhat dysfunctional parents who are more interested in their obsession with ballroom dancing then their son. Later you see this relationship improve. The other being the relationship between a young child and his grandmother and how age inevitable leads to the topic of dying.
The boy dreads Friday nights at Grannys house until one day when trying to get himself a treat from the biscuit tin high on the shelf he discovers it holds diamonds. Granny then makes up stories about her jewel heists. From there you follow the hilarious adventure as the two of them plan an attempt to steal the Crown Jewels. The ending is brilliant and having never cried in a kid’s book before I was pausing many times to gain composure as I read on with my son.

See How Small, by Scott Blackwood

A riveting novel about the aftermath of a brutal murder of three teenage girls, written in incantatory prose 'that's as fine as any being written by an American author today' (Ben Fountain) One late autumn evening in a Texas town, two strangers walk into an ice cream shop shortly before closing time. They bind up the three teenage girls who are working the counter, set fire to the shop, and disappear. 'See How Small' tells the stories of the survivors - family, witnesses, and suspects - who must endure in the wake of atrocity. Justice remains elusive in their world, human connection tenuous. Hovering above the aftermath of their deaths are the three girls. They watch over the town and make occasional visitations, trying to connect with and prod to life those they left behind. "See how small a thing it is that keeps us apart," they say. A master of compression and lyrical precision, Scott Blackwood has surpassed himself with this haunting, beautiful, and enormously powerful new novel.

Review
'A brutal, necessary and near perfect novel' NPR 'Mesmerizing ... In lyrical, often dreamlike prose, Blackwood illuminates the nature of grief and the connections among the living and the dead' People 'See How Small is superb. In prose that's as fine as any being written today, Scott Blackwood plumbs the depths of a story that is alternately haunting, terrifying, and achingly tragic. Blackwood illuminates the human condition even as he breaks our hearts.' Ben Fountain, author of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk 'A genre-defying novel of powerful emotion, intrigue, and truth ... Reminiscent of Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones and based on a similar, still-unsolved 1991 case in Austin, Tex., Blackwood explores the effects of senseless crime on an innocent, tightly knit community, using deft prose to mine the essence of human grief and compassion' Publishers Weekly (starred) 'Blackwood's short, shard-like chapters cleverly reflect the jagged emotional fragmentation of his characters' Daily Mail 'Blackwood's novel has a delicate lyricism' Sunday Times 'Haunted and haunting ... with characters rendered so convincingly you think about sending cards of condolence or calling with advice on the investigation' Daniel Woodrell, author of Winter's Bone and The Maid's Version 'Scott Blackwood is a wizard, and in See How Small he puts his skills to dazzling use as he anatomizes a town and a crime. Best of all is the deep empathy he brings to his characters, innocent and guilty, wise and confused; all of them are given the grace of his understanding. A vivid and astonishing novel.' Margot Livesey, author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy

All the Days And Nights, by Niven Govinden

From the author of ‘Black Bread White Beer’.

The East Coast of America, 1980.

Anna Brown, a dying artist, works on her final portrait. Obsessive and secretive, it is a righting of her past failures; her final statement.

John Brown, her husband and life-long muse, has left; walked out of their home one morning to travel cross-country in search of the paintings he has sat for.

As their stories unfold – independently, for the first time in many years – a passionate unconventional relationship is revealed, between two people living through the most tumultuous decades of modern history.

All the Days and Nights is the story of an art hunt during a twilight period of painting. It lays bare two relationships that are ever changing and incomparable: of the artist and the muse, and of lovers. It is an exploration of what it means to create, what it means to inspire, what it means to live.
