This story of the abduction of a free Negro adult from the North and his enslavement in the South--provides a sensational element which cannot be matched in any of the dozens of narratives written by former slaves. 'Think of it: For thirty years a man, wit all man's hopes, fears and aspirations--with a wife and children to call him by the endearing names of husband and father--with a home, humble it may be, but still a home...then for twelve years a thing, a chattel personal, classed with mules and horses....Oh! it is horrible. It chills the blood to think that such are.'

About the Author
Solomon Northup was born a free man in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1808. He lived as such until 1841 when, attracted by a job offer, he travelled to Washington, DC, where he was drugged and sold into slavery by his supposed employers. Northup was enslaved for twelve years before he regained his freedom and returned to New York. There, he became an advocate for abolitionism and in the 1860s began helping fugitive slaves via the Underground Railroad. Northup is believed to have died between 1863 and 1875, but both the date and circumstances of his death are unknown.

Extraordinary book, but there are better versions on Kindle

As slave stories go, this one is, in my view, without peer. Northup's s captivating tale -- which has gained attention because of the movie that shares the book's title -- is told in exacting detail with an easy prose. He sets the stage masterfully, describing people and places before proceeding into the narrative. Unlike works of fiction, this book is so compelling because, by all accounts, it is true. There is no polemical axe to grind, as with Uncle Tom (a novel at one point wryly referenced by Northup). Here you see both the brutality of slavery and the moments of kindness by slaves and even some slave owners. Solomon tells the story with clarity and intelligence.

The free versions on other sites I found were pretty poorly formatted, so spending a dollar for a polished version on Amazon is worthwhile, but this one is not the best of them. Granted, the book is formatted adequately, and any typographical errors in this version seem to be simple reproductions of the original.

However, the supporting material is a letdown. I read the version that includes the introduction by novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez. That introduction is borderline insulting, as it makes only a weak attempt to separate accounts with fictional elements like Roots from an authentic account like this one. Worse still, Perkins-Valdez can't resist indulging in repeatedly referencing her own recently released slave novel, even going so far as to quote herself. There are almost no historical elements to this version beyond the main book -- no mention of Northup after the book, no mention of he writer who helped him pen the book, nothing. There is more information on the writer of the introduction than there is the author. One other oddity worth mentioning: the original book's preface -- the one done by the man who helped Northup write the book -- has been curiously excised from this version too. That makes this version something less than complete.

For those looking for a better version, you might consider Twelve Years a Slave - Enhanced Edition by Dr. Sue Eakin Based on a Lifetime Project. New Info, Images, Maps, which contains a robust amount of supporting material and, better still, is right now the same cost as this version.

The Truth Shall Set You Free of Lies

Growing up in the North,I had always found it hard to imagine that slavery not only existed in this country,but flourished.Through the years,I have read many an autobiography or history book concerning slavery and thought I knew it all. And yet I was blind.
Until I read Solomon Northrup's "12 Years a Slave." Where has this book been? It is a masterpiece of history,of one man,one free man's life. A true picture of 'The Old South'.
Mr. Northrup was a free black man with a beautiful wife and two daughters living in Saratoga,NY. He was lured from his home by slave traders who specialized in the awful practice of kidnapping free black citizens and selling them into slavery. Torn from his home and family,Mr.Northrup endured the worst that can happen to a human being,and still live.
And yet,he remained fair and honest,never stooping to the level some of his white masters did.
I am not going to rewrite the book in this review because I recommend reading it for yourself. Slavery was and is a vile institution.
Solomon Northrup is my new inspiration.
This book will shock you. But you will be the better for having read it.

Excellent book, terrible edition.

This is an excellent book that is, unfortunately, terribly edited. I refer exclusively to the Kindle edition. It is replete with typos and missing words that frequently interrupt comprehension and that testify to an overall sloppiness that is difficult to excuse. If I had to guess, this was mechanically transformed from a paper to a kindle edition, with little or no human oversight. This lack of oversight shows on almost a page by page basis - and speaks extremely poorly of the overall quality. This is a real shame, because the book itself is indispensable reading for anyone who wants to *begin* to confront the trauma of slavery - a trauma that continues to inflect American and global affairs to this day.

Frustrating and Disappointing

Your enjoyment of You Had Me at Hello will depend sorely on how much Ben you can tolerate. Sadly, I couldn’t tolerate much.

This saddens me so much, because the premise for this book is wonderful. We’ve all had that one person who’s “got away”, so it is supposed to be easy to relate to this story.

It starts off pretty strong too! We see Rachel & Ben in college, where it all started. Ben jokingly (and so cutely!!!) proposes to Rachel and then we’re thrust into present day, 13 years later. Rachel is unhappily engaged to someone else, and hasn’t heard from Ben in over a decade.

For the most part, this book is told in past and present POV’s. The past POV shows us Rachel’s life with Ben in college, while the present POV tells shows us how Rachel has been dealing with her life after her fallout with Ben.

What motivated me to keep reading was the fact that I wanted to know why they stopped speaking to each other.

After I actually found out, I was left feeling so disappointed. It made me hate the situation even more and frankly removed an overall star from my rating.

Rachel seems like a very put-together girl, and I value her honesty at the beginning and her courage to have broken off her engagement because she wasn’t happy. After this, when Ben comes into the picture she turns into this lovesick, indecisive, girl who is suddenly unable to speak her mind and decides to settle for whatever it is Ben can offer her.

Which, let’s get this out of the way first: Ben is married. Yes, you heard me correctly. He is not only married, but also happily married. So now begins the constant hot/cold back and forth game between Ben & Rachel.

I hate Ben. I seriously do. Ben is like this annoying rock in your shoe. You think it’ll stop annoying you eventually, but then it’s midday and the rock is really digging into your foot and you feel as if the only solution is to either cut off your foot or set the rock on fire (just me…?). Point is, whenever you thought you couldn’t get any more annoyed by Ben, there he went, annoying you even more!

He said he loved his wife, he said he was happily married, he said he didn’t give a crap about Rachel’s love life, except that’s what it all was. Words. Whenever Rachel did as much as look at someone who wasn’t Ben, he would go all possessive and weird. And then everyone tries to make Rachel feel bad as if she were trying to break apart a marriage or something! I really couldn’t deal with something that was so clearly Ben’s fault.

Something else that really bothered me was the ending. So much angst and drama! I really could’ve done without it. It left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, and a scowl for the rest of the week.

What I did like was Rachel’s group of friends. They were all so quirky and fun! I wanted to be friends with them in real life. I also liked the college scenes because Rachel & Ben were much more tolerable then. There’s no doubt that Mhairi McFarlane is a great author, however this book needed much more editing and revision.

Overall, this book could have been something really great, but due to my strong dislike for the main characters, and the lack of real story, I really could not bring myself to rate it something more than 2 stars.

Too much sad, not enough happy

I guess I went in with the wrong expectations. Just too much sad and not enough happy. The writing is fine, and I liked the characters. The best part of the book for me was the interaction between the heroine and her friends. Her friends are hilarious and unique and just so cleverly written. I found their stories much more interesting than Rachel's. I just can't get into a romantic story where the "hero" is married for 98% of the story.

If the answer's yes, then You Had Me At Hello answers some of the questions and explores the inevitable complications that arise when one of the protagonists involved isn't free to follow their heart. Seductively straddling two parallel timelines, McFarlane's debut novel follows the present day travails of Rachel and Ben while regularly dipping back into the past to show how the two met and first fell in love. It's a deceptively simple device that lends the central romance genuine poignancy and draws the reader ever closer to the two would-be lovers, giving them a warmth and vitality that keeps you rooting for them even when an eventual reunion seems impossible.

There's a refreshing adult edge to the dialogue, which often fizzes with enough citric spritz to fuel a screwball comedy. An attractive cast of friends cajole, sympathize with and complicate Rachel's stumbling pursuit of rekindled romance, adding a rich and humorous backdrop made all the more appealing by the story being grounded in the trendy and distinctly contemporary Northern Quarter of Manchester.

This admirably assured novel marks Mhairi McFarlane as an exciting talent to look out for in the future. Witty, engaging and romantic, You Had Me At Hello will keep you enthralled until the final reveal, by which time you will have grown so close to Rachel and Ben that you'll hope against all expectations that true love will find a way, no matter what adversaries are sent to thwart it. If we didn't know already, McFarlane successfully proves the truism you never know what a good thing you've got until it's gone.

A heartwarming and somewhat true story

“It’s hard to fight a dream,” Homer answered. “And maybe harder to lose one.”

Two words that don't seem natural to go together, alligator and pet. At least, not in my world! Yet, this somewhat true story (according to Homer Hickam) is his quirky and humourous family legend in which his mother Elsie returns her pet alligator Albert to its home ground in Florida. Tagging along are his father Homer and a rooster, which shall remain nameless throughout the story. They encounter a few notable figures like John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway, end up in a bank robbery and even star in a movie during their trip through several states.

“It seems anytime I am close to happiness, it is snatched away from me."

His mother seemed a bit hard on his father, slightly spoiled and demanding. Homer just wants to lead a simple life with his beautiful wife and steady job as a coalminer. I felt she treated him as if he would never be good enough for her, like she imagined her great love Buddy Ebsen would have been. Yes, the one and only. He was also the one who gifted Albert to the couple on their wedding day.

".. when loss wakes you up in the morning and puts you to sleep at night.” Her hazel eyes turned a bit misty. “You never get used to it.”

When finally having found Albert a new home, they are ready to start a new life together without him. Both their characters have developed over time. They have grown together. By the end of the adventure, Elsie seemed happier and more satisfied with the here and now instead of focusing on the past. Homer stands up more for himself and understands and accepts more of Elsie's quirks.

Hickam writes in a very engaging way. Even though you have to stretch your imagination a little bit at certain parts, it all felt exciting and adventurous and you'd wish you could tag along. Maybe take a swim together with Albert. Or maybe not.

This is one of those books you will remember for a long time.

WOW! What a book! This is not the sort of book I would normally pick up BUT I absolutely adored it, loved Albert and the rooster and the twists along the way.

Surreal, yet wise, funny, perceptive and beautifully written. A really incredible journey, both physically and spiritually.

"This is a tale where everything is true, except the bits that are made up." What a tale it is. Superficially it's the tale of an eight hundred mile journey by a husband, Homer Hickam Sr. and his wife, Elsie Lavender Hickam, from the coalfields of West Virginia to Key West, Florida with the intention of returning the wife's four foot pet alligator, Albert, to the wild. However, the depth of incident and emotion in this story, real or imaginary, lifts this in to another league.
How that state of affairs came to be is described remarkably objectively by the writer, given that Elsie and Homer were his parents. Their marriage had a rocky start to say the least.
Elsie returns to West Virginia from Florida following the departure of the man she loves for New York (the then rookie actor, Buddy Ebsen). Back in the coalfields she hates, Elsie finds that Homer has been waiting for her. With Elsie back on the scene but not apparently interested in him, the spark goes out of Homer; his boss, anxious about the welfare of one of his best workers, effectively arranges their marriage. Buddy Ebsen's wedding gift to Elsie is a five inch alligator, whom she names Albert.

Albert becomes a cherished pet. Adored by Elsie, he takes liberties with Homer who eventually issues an 'Albert or me' ultimatum. With suitable foster homes in short supply in West Virginia, Albert has to travel home. By car, with an unexpected rooster as his companion.

The journey was never going to be mundane, but it becomes surreal beyond belief. Albert possibly saves Homer's life during a bank robbery, they meet John Steinbeck, researching his next novel, who becomes their passenger. They are mistakenly identified as enemies of the state, their car requires repair and they are forced to halt for a while, before continuing in a very unexpected fashion. There are moments of great peril, further bizarre coincidences - if there is any such thing as coincidence - and Ernest Hemingway drops by, not to mention Buddy Ebsen.

Both Homer and Elsie embark on a remarkable inner journey too. Having married knowing little of each other and with the spectre of a former love continually over them, the time they spend together forces them to re-evaluate, to examine what they know not just about themselves but about life.
From the first word to the last, this is a beautifully written, wise, funny and perceptive book. It just has so much. It doesn't really matter if most of the book's physical action is fiction. It's what happens between Homer, Elsie and Albert that really counts. A book you will want to keep and read again.

Better editing, maybe?

This is a really good book, and I wanted to give it five stars. I paused on a top rating because I got so distracted by the decline in grammar near the end of the book. I think it might be interesting to count the number of times the word "ain't" was used in the last third of the book. Still, a really good story!
