About the Author

Judith Kerr was born in Berlin, but left Germany with her family in 1933 to escape the Nazis. They arrived in England in 1936, having spent the intervening years in Switzerland and France. There she met her husband Nigel Kneale and they had two children together; Judith wrote her first picture ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ for them, which has gone on to become a much-loved classic, as well as many other titles including the timeless ‘Mog the Forgetful Cat’. She was awarded an OBE in 2012 for services to children’s literature and holocaust education, and celebrated her 92nd birthday in 2015.

Tom Graham left school at 14 without qualifications. He is a smoker, and says that writing the Life on Mars novels is the nearest thing he's had to a regular job since he got banned from driving. He part-owns a greyhound called Arthur and his ambition is to get fruity with Raquel Welch (to be clear about it, that's Tom's ambition, not Arthur's).

Sam Tyler grow a backbone!

I enjoyed both of the original TV series, the UK and US versions so when I found four tie in books, I bought them all on the strength of that previous enjoyment.
Unfortunately after reading this first one of the four I was sorry I did. Perhaps my memory failed me but I was sure the lead character of Sam was not such a whining and helpless baby as he is portrayed in this book.
The action takes place here after the original UK series ends with Sam having made his choice to remain in 1973 but his ability to function is constantly hampered by his 'visions' of the 'test pattern girl' who has taken on a much more menacing mien.
In the world he describes of 1973, and one I also remember, the character of Sam as written here would not have been tolerated in that environment.
Even a fantasy scenario has to ring true, and this book was rather disappointing. I doubt I would even bother reading the others I bought of the series.

The Gene Genie Returns!

I must say I was quite excited when I heard about the new book series coming out for Life on Mars. I'm a huge fan. After reading Blood, Bullets, and Blue Stratos, however, I found myself a little disappointed. The story line is okay, but I didn't feel that the author captured the characters very well. The dialogue seemed very stiff and unnatural, and a bit repetitive at times. One major pet peeve of mine, in regards to writing, is to never be repetitve with a character's name to whom the other character is addressing in the same line (i.e. "Frank, put that down. I don't want another incident like yesterday, Frank. Do you want me to lose my job, Frank?"), and the dialogue in this novel tended to be that way at times. I couldn't help but also notice several mechanical errors along the way as well, ones that could have been easy fixes. Overall, I'm not sure the author has captured the heart of the characters yet, but it's definitely a work in progress. I thought he did a superb job writing the descriptive portions of the text. He kept me glued to the pages during all other moments when the characters weren't speaking. I think he especially has the test card girl's creepiness factor captured perfectly.
I think die-hard Life on Mars fans will be eager to read Tom Graham's e-books, but like the finale of the show, I think it will leave fans wanting more.

Jorge Luis Borges, known as Georgie to his friends, married Elsa Astete Millán in 1967. Borges was sixty-eight years old at the time of the wedding; Elsa, a widow, with a son in his twenties, was eleven years younger.

It proved to be a tempestuous and eventful marriage that would leave an indelible mark on the remainder of Borges’ life, but their relationship has been largely glossed over by previous biographers. This is because the one person who knew all the details has refused to speak about it. Until now.

Norman Thomas di Giovanni worked with Borges in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in Buenos Aires from late 1967 to 1972 and thereafter sporadically until Borges’s death in 1986. During their first period together di Giovanni spent more time with the couple than did almost anyone else. He was privy to the private side of their relationship and to its sudden decline. It was di Giovanni who helped the demoralized Borges by organizing and arranging his divorce and at the same time rescuing his library and smuggling him out of Buenos Aires to avoid the wrath of Elsa and her lawyers.

The book is based on the author’s extensive collection of original material in the form of diaries, notebooks, letters, manuscripts, and photographs, most of which has never before been seen. It provides a unique insight into one of the few true geniuses of literature.

Oriah Mountain Dreamer is a workshop leader and writer.
