Lesson learned....never assume

It's not so much the product itself that I have a problem with. It is more the fact that because this was presented as a 9 book set pack from a "collection" it led me to believe I would be receiving the first 9 books of the series or at least 9 books in chronological order, not the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, then the 8th and 9th, then the 12th, then the 17th and 18th, and lastly the 20th. Now I'm stuck trying to buy separately all the ones that fall in between those.

1st Dr. Seuss Book for Children -- Imaginative Directions!

When you first open this book, you will be struck that it's not quite like any other Dr. Seuss book. The first drawings are smaller and simpler. The poetry is a little more restrained. You'll wonder why it's different, and then you will realize that this was his very first book for children. Like most of us, he was a little restrained at first. But, before long, the full gamut of Dr. Seuss is loose!
Marco is a small boy who walks to school along Mulberry Street. His father likes to encourage him. "'Marco, keep your eyelids up and see what you can see.'" Marco's father is looking for the eye of a scientist or a reporter. But Marco has the eye of a poet. So when Marco tells what he has imagined he has seen, his father sternly says, "'Your eyesight's much too keen. Stop telling such outlandish tales. Stop turning minnows into whales.'"
The story then takes you through one day when Marco only sees a horse pulling a man on a broken-down wagon on Mulberry Street. But Marco soon imagines something much grander. If you change a horse for a zebra, that's better. Or you could change that zebra for a large reindeer. Or better yet, how about an elephant with a Rajah wearing rubies on a throne on top? And on it goes.
When Marco gets home, he's elated. "I ran up the steps and I felt simply GREAT!" The reason for his excitement is because "I HAD A STORY THAT NO ONE COULD BEAT!" I think you'll agree.
So what does he tell his father? You'll be amazed!
I found that this book worked well at several levels. First, it captures the kind of miscommunication between parent and child that can set up barriers that exclude what could be much shared joy. Marco's father needs to learn to enjoy his son's imagination, as long as Marco isn't confused about what is real and what is imagination.
Second, many people have trouble understanding how to be creative. Substitution of elements is a classic technique. Here, the structure of that process is elegantly displayed. First, you replace one element. Then you see if that helps you see a way to create a related replacement of another element. Then what does that suggest? And on it goes. Soon, there is no obvious link back to the beginning, but you have created something wonderful that would have been hard to do from a blank sheet of paper. Fiction writers, pay attention!
Third, most children these days complain that they are bored all of the time if they don't have someone putting on a world class act for them. Here is a good role model for how they can create an exciting set of thoughts out of something very mundane. Wow! Is this needed, or what?
To take advantage of this potential, I suggest that you and your child go out for a walk and play this imagination game together. Then, come back and make a book out of the experience that recounts how you went from one step to another. That's a wonderful way to ensure that your child's natural brilliance has a chance to develop even further, and she or he will realize that you want to enter into play with him or her. Wonderful bonding will result!

The very first Seuss book

This is a fine book. It appeals to everyone I know, from a bright young sprite to an old grump. I especially love to read it aloud because it has great rhythm and rhyme and a refrain, that everybody likes to join in on. I also recommend it for purchase for your own small child, grandchild, neighbor or friend, because even non-readers will pull it off the shelf over and over again. Seuss's pictures are completely engaging. I'll close with one piece of trivia: This was the first children's book Seuss ever wrote. At the time, he was making his living drawing cartoons for magazines, newspapers, and advertising campaigns. I've read his own account of how he got started on it. He was on a cruise during a storm, listening to his ship's engines pound out a rhythm and he came up with the refrain. Started to make notes as to just what his narrator might see, worked on the text and added drawings at home, and sent it out to editors only to have it rejected umpteen times. Finally he just happened to bump into a editor he knew who liked it and he was off on a new career. What a genius.

Mulberry Street

The main character in this book is named Marco, and he has a slight problem with an over-active imagination. Every morning when Marco leaves home to walk to school, 'Dad always says to me, "Marco, keep your eyelids up and see what you can see."' We meet Marco when he is on the way back from school and all he's noticed 'was a horse and a wagon on Mulberry Street.' Marco isn't too proud of this observation, "That can't be my story. That's only a start. I'll say that a ZEBRA was pulling that cart!"
Slowly and surely the story changes, now the zebra is pulling a chariot, now it's a reindeer, next it's pulling a sled and before you know it, he's got two giraffes and an elephant pulling a big brass band with a trailer attached on behind going through town escorted by the police. Marco gets so excited about this 'story that no one could beat! And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street!' But when Dad asks him what he sees he replies '"Nothing" I said, growing red as a beat, "but a plain horse and wagon on Mulberry street."'
The story is told in rhyme, as you might be able to see from some of the quotes I used. The story flows wonderfully, just like all of Dr. Seuss' works. The pictures are wonderful as well. The way all the animals are smiling and seem pleased that they get to pull these things is just really cute. The colors used are really nice, and the pictures are really bold and bright.
Personally, this is one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books because I really like Marco's imagination and how he is always telling 'such outlandish tales... turning minnows into whales'.

A Satisfying Read

Somewhere in the 4-5 range. I really liked this book and can't wait for the next.

If you are expecting something like GAME OF THRONES you can go ahead and kill that expectation or put it on a shelf to languish. This book is delightfully different. In fact it reminds me of the historical classics like THE BLACK ARROW and IVANHOE. And if it wasn't for a handful of instances with naughty language the story would be suitable for 6th Graders on up. However it does use the C-word for lady bits and a few other choice words I can't recall at the moment, so it's not a book I'd hand to a youngster. (Editors, come out with a kid's version! You'll make more money)

When I first began reading I wasn't sure what I thought but it wasn't long until I got caught up in Dunk and Egg's meanderings through the kingdoms. Dunk is a huge young man that is as close to an honest, chivalrous knight as you can come. Egg is a prince in hiding and then a prince in training as a Dunk's squire.

As Dunk is a 'Hedge Knight', which is to say he freelances, they meander from job to job taking in the occasional tourney. They, of course, run across fair maids and evil doers. Adventures spring from politics, jealousy and greed, and the fact that Dunk is still learning his trade and finding his own way in the world.

What makes the story so engrossing is that Martin knows his medieval stuff. He knows about the tournaments of the times, the weaponry, the garments, and even the food. All this serves to bring the story alive.

And as I sit here typing this review I find myself wondering what Dunk and Egg are doing today. Which means that Martin has done his job admirable. He's made me like the setting and characters so much that I not only care about what great adventures they are working up to, but also about what they are doing when absolutely nothing much is going on.

Great book, hardcover didnt fulfill my expectations!

I'll go short on the book. GRRM did an awesome job. The book is full of draws.

My comment go straight to the 4 stars. I was disappointed with the physical cover. The hard cover is leathered red and plain. The image you see in display, is a paper wrapping the hard cover, its well ended, but the thing is that this paper aint as strong as a hardcover itself, and probably wont last as long.

I was expecting a cover as "a world of ice and fire" book, which is great and durable, and didnt get it. book 5 stars, shell 2 stars. apart from that hard cover looks good.

A fine distraction while waiting for _The Winds of Winter_, but not of the caliber or quality of his other work

I am a big fan of GRR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire and while waiting for _The Winds of Winter_ to be published, I picked up _A Knight of Seven Kingdoms_. Its a breezy read containing 3 short stories set some 100 years prior to the events in GoT. The unlikely duo Dunc and Egg are well written (Dunc, a hedge knight is a hot mess - powerfully built but still learning his trade, earnest, sweet but not too bright, Egg the youngest son of the youngest son of the ruling family is a little snotty and a little hot-tempered but with a big heart) - but its the rest of the characters and the plot of the short stories themselves that fall flat.

Among the many things that have endeared the series to me is the vivid description of place and people. Aside from the protagonists, the other characters are one-sided and too much emphasis is placed on heraldry and ancillary action prior to the main plot to really engage readers. The action sequences are well written (one of Martin's strengths as a writer), but the direction of the short stories is missing - taken individually they are fine vignettes, but some broader direction or unifying theme would have made the collection here stronger.

Undoubtedly fans of Martin will find much to enjoy here - and there is quite a lot to recommend here. Unfortunately, however, the story falls a little flat in comparison to the depth and complexity of characters and places in the main series.

A Mystery Why He Wrote This

I admire Straub's writing and intelligence, or I never would have finished this book. I have to agree with some few other reviewers that this book promised paranormal elements, then went into whole different directions, would insert another paranormal-tinged scene, only to veer off again with more and more characters. His descriptions were excellent, but it was as if he didn't have his mind fully on what he was writing. Still, I'd buy and read his other works.

Like a good wine ...

In my childhood -- when summers lasted forever -- I enjoyed reading some books annually at our isolated northern cottage. Now retired, I still do.

Straub's "Mystery" is a good read. It might not rank up there with the so-called "classics" I studied in universities, but I still re-read it because it's a fascinating story about the mysteries in dying, loving, hating, growing up, and living in multiple worlds. It focuses on hope. Definitely not a fantasy or ghost story.

The AUDIO version, unfortunately, left out a lot of the "meat" that makes the book a good read, and is not worth listening to more than once.
