A potentially good story but too much space/time theoretical geekiness.

As an ardent sci-fi fan since my early reading days, I have a collection dating back from the birth of the genre in the 30's up to it's heyday in the 70's and early 80's. I lost touch a bit and wandered off in the realms of the fantasy genre but I still get an urge for some proper sci-fi and frequently revisit Azimov, Pohl, Harrison and other cosy old favourites.

Apart from Iain M. Banks' superb `Culture' series, I hadn't read any offerings from the new generation of authors so I though it was time I dipped a toe in the water. I had a post-Christmas Amazon research frenzy and decided to get `Time' along with a number of others from a variety of authors.

It certainly lives up to the `hard sci-fi' label with loads of mind-boggling cosmology and quantum mechanics but I personally found that the frequent, and detailed, meanderings into these areas detracted from the narrative flow of an otherwise excellently written book. The short, choppy chapters, each based around an individual character maintained the pace and, once you got used to it, didn't interfere with the story.

I must confess, though, that I got to the end and thought `Hmmm, did I enjoy that?' Well written and encompassing a truly vast subject area, I however felt that it was a treatise on the author's understanding of the more obscure theories of space/time and that he threw in some one-dimensional characters as a bit of an afterthought; it felt like a much bigger book by a very capable author had been ruthlessly edited by a mathematician.

This is what happens when Sci Fi tries to predict a future only ten years out from it's pubication date.

A just over a decade out from it's publication date and the story line has been caught up by the passage of time, and it hasn't aged well.

The "gum'ent did-it" plot line may have seemed fresh back in the late 90's, but it comes across today as fairly thin and well worn.

I really struggled to even finish this book, and there's no way I'll be back for seconds.

Baxter has written a very clever book, very enjoyable. I really liked the way he uses things like Feynman's radio in the story.

About the Author

J. G. Ballard was born in 1930 in Shanghai. After internment in a civilian prison camp, his family returned to England in 1946. His 1984 bestseller ‘Empire of the Sun’ won the Guardian Fiction Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. His controversial novel ‘Crash’ was made into a film by David Cronenberg. His autobiography ‘Miracles of Life’ was published in 2008, and a collection of interviews with the author, ‘Extreme Metaphors’, was published in 2012. J. G. Ballard passed away in 2009.

Well... Now I don't have to go see the movie.

So I decided to purchase this book because I saw Tom Hiddleston was in the movie coming out, if he was in it this book had to be good right? Ermm.... It was fascinating, I won't lie there. J.G. Ballard showed the breakdown of a society in an apartment building and reading it, it felt like it could in fact happen. It seemed to destroy the reader's faith in humanity, showing how quickly the people resorted to animalistic behaviors when the utilities started breaking down. I really liked how it was written, the idea of it was intriguing, but it left me with such a dark gut feeling... It's not one that I'd recommend to just anyone.

Ballard pulls his punches and censors himself throughout. It's as though he wants to write horror, but just barely alludes to the very worst crimes the characters can inflict on one another. The close is overly ambiguous, with no clear implications for the society outside the high-rises. I failed to detect any theme apart from "technology isolates and dehumanizes" and "men are animals". Aside from that there's the possibility of this being an extended piece of architectural criticism, but I doubt that was ever Ballard's intent - I give him much more credit than that.

Classic Sci-Fi for an Earthbound Age

High-Rise is a compelling, modern take on De Sade, taking a look at the darker sides of a humanity with too little room and too much time. The prose reminded me of some great Sci-Fi Golden Age writing, descriptive without being flowery, chilling without gratuitous language. The author pulls off quite a feat in never once stooping to the level of his characters, and in doing so leaves one able to sympathize with even the most barbaric of them.
Though I enjoyed the novel, I feel it goes on a bit farther than it should. Essentially, it is a take on the old 'worldship' stories, modified for an era that does not dream of the stars, all of which that I've read have been in a novella length, and well-served for it. While Ballard tries to fill every page with worthwhile words, one can almost see him straining to keep the work at novel length, rather than taking the pay cut that comes with short fiction. And, truly, a few repetitive scenes do little to distract from the overall story, and readers will get their money's worth with High-Rise.
WARNING: dog lovers, this novel contains several scenes, including one quite pivotal one, of violence towards dogs. As previously noted, the prose never becomes grotesque, but still be warned.
