Brilliant as usual :)

This book was a great addition to the Skulduggery Pleasant series that helped me understand and learn more about the world the books are set in. Landy's writing is, as usual, amazing, witty and humorous. The stories were all hugely entertaining and some were truly scary, such as Get Behind Thee, Bubba Moon. The stories also filled in so much background information for the books. 5 Stars.

This book is a masterpiece! A true finish to an incredible series! I was hanging on for more at the end, I can't wait to see where he takes with after this! This is one of those novels that you cannot spoil, the reader has to experience it for themselves!

Really, the best way to read The Hobbit

Okay, so I say that this is the best way to read The Hobbit. And I am dead serious.
I know that annotated books can be difficult to navigate, filled with useless, pointless, or just plain boring information, and can be grossly oversized. That is not the case here.
So - here's the scoop.
The original story is very nicely presented, with all original illustrations in color when possible, and in black and white elsewhere. The type is nice and clear, very easy to read. (Many cheaper editions are also rather hard on the eyes. Check the print before you buy, folks!)
The illustrations are printed very clearly, and with very good notes on what they are.
And then the annotations - useful, engaging, and very well done. You will WANT to read these. We discover how the book was written, and what was changed between editions. (There were many changes made so that The Hobbit would conform more easily to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.) There are fascinating tidbits about Tolkien's life and the experiences that made their way into the story.
The forward tells about the writing of the novel, and the appedices give additional details about the text.
There are also many illustrations from other editions of the book. These are varied, from thought-provoking to not-provoking.
And the book is not too big. Some editions are simply too big to be read, but this book is reasonably sized so that you can actually READ IT! In fact, I have not read any other edition of The Hobbit for years, since the original annotated version came out.
The new edition is very much worthwhile. Enjoy!

The Hobbit Jemima Catlin

I just wanted to take the time to update anyone who is interested in purchasing this illustrated edition of The Hobbit. As you probably know, there aren't many illustrated editions of the hobbit and most that are illustrated aren't all that incredible. So far, my favorite edition has been the one by Alan Lee. I must say, it's hard to top his work. Alan Lee really helped bring the story to life for me when I first read this incredible adventure by Tolkien. However, because I believe that The Hobbit is a tale directed at the hearts of children and adults that are young at heart, I believe that Jemima Catlin's illustrated edition has topped even the great Alan Lee's. First off, the quality of this book is excellent. The book has been wrapped in cloth so the book feels high quality and soft to the touch. Also, the cover has a beautiful illustration from the book that includes carefully placed gold etching on the leaves, title, and author's name. This really gives the book a nice luster and shine. The book doesn't come with a book jacket and honestly I think that was smart based off of how high quality the book feels and looks. It just doesn't need a cheap paper jacket to cover such a beautiful looking book.

The illustrations that are presented in the book are a thing of beauty. Not only are there a great many (every two or three pages or so) but they are incredibly colorful and really pop when you look at them. I do think the illustrator's style is to appear more colorful and simple at first glance, but at the same time you will look at the illustrations carefully and see the amount of time and effort that she put into this work. I love this style of simplicity and use of color. Though not the exact same style, I feel like it reminds me of illustrators like William Steig who just have this incredible knack for bringing out amazing details with small illustrations. In fact, I truly and desperately hope that Jemima Catlin will be commissioned for Lord of the Rings. If you happen to read this Jemima, I just wanted to say thanks for putting so much passion and hard work into this book. I look forward to reading this to my children someday and plan on using your version when I do! As a side note, I should mention that some of Tolkien's original maps are included in the front and back of the book.

Lastly, it wouldn't be an appropriate review of The Hobbit without mentioning how amazing this story really is. If there is any part of you that believes in things like magic, risk-taking, adventure, friendship to the end, finding faith in the smallest of people or things, and good triumphing over evil, this is the book for you. I fell in love with the characters of this story and am thankful for authors like J.R.R Tolkien for having that God-given ability to captivate readers through these characters and the adventures they set out on. Every time I read this book I feel like I'm a kid again and that in itself is a great thing in my eyes. However, as an adult this book not only brings about those childhood feelings, but also strengthens my personal faith, and leads me to believe that those who truly live life to the fullest are those who go against the flow, take risks despite the fears or consequences when they know that it's in the name of doing what they feel is right inside of there hearts. I think there really is some of Bilbo Baggins in all of us and we learn a great deal from his adventure.

If you cannot tell, I love this book. It is saying a lot for me that this is my favorite edition of the book so far. This truly is a high-quality, gift edition that you will be very proud to own. Don't hesitate to purchase! Thank you J.R.R Tolkien and Jemima Catlin!

Finally a "real" unabridged recording of LOTR

I am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!

This is the fourth installment of the Foxworth family, Bart Jory and Cindy are early thirties, twenty five and sixteen. He's the younger son of their grandmother Olivia and their grandfather Malcolm, he was missing and presumed dead as a young man of eighteen. He moves to the restored home that burned down. Family Reunion From Hell Is Boring

`Seeds of Yesterday' features the return of Cathy and Chris, the greatest lovers in the history of literature. Now middle aged they're having a family reunion. You'd think by now they'd be hiding in a cave in Tibet trying to avoid their family like the plague they are. The signs of doom are obvious.

They are meeting at the now rebuilt haunted mansion Foxworth Hall. (Doom) Their eldest son Jory had a promising career as a dancer but has been rendered a paraplegic. (Doom) Jory's wife Melodie is not supporting him and she's pregnant. (Doom) Their second son Bart has been released from an asylum and now has total control of the family's billions. (Doom) Their promiscuous 16 year old daughter Cindy is bringing home a new boyfriend. (Doom) Joel, presumed dead 60 years ago has reemerged with sinister motives. (Doom) They call him "Uncle Joel" although the Foxworth family tree is so bent I think technically he's more a cousin.

Has fate ever been so tempted? Everything imaginable goes wrong, mostly Bart reverting to his psychotic behavior. Joel also goes on lengthy fire and brimstone sermons about all the incest going on, blah blah blah, we've been listening to this for the last 4 books, get over it. NONE of this is interesting. Essentially these characters have the same argument about how much they hate each other for 380 pages of the 400 page book. This is not an exaggeration but an exact figure.

At one point Cathy comments "This cannot go on any longer." But it does. This one argument just drags on and on. She also states, "Nothing that has happened in our lives has been coincidence." She's right; it's a result of her stupidity. Why is the family putting up with Bart's psychotic violence?

After Cathy and Chris's first adventures in `Flowers in the Attic' and `Pedals On the Wind' anything that could happen afterwards seems passé. A nuclear holocaust? Alien invasion? A comet on a collision course with earth? Cathy and Chris have faired far worse.

Like most fans of VC Andrews' Dollanganger saga I felt an obligation to finish the series, and after all `Seeds of Yesterday' does star two of literature's most interesting characters Cathy and Chris. I want to relieve you of this burden, YOU ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO READ THIS BOOK.

As much as we love Cathy and Chris, we do not need to follow their lives to the last breath. We are only interested in the exciting elements of their life. All that happens in `Seeds of Yesterday' is their deaths. They die, everybody dies of something someday. Fans agree that their story should have concluded with the ending of `Pedals On the Wind'. They lived happily ever after.

About the Author

Jack Kerley spent years as an advertising agency writer and producer before his wife demanded he quit work and write a novel, which he thought a fine idea. The result was The Hundredth Man, the first in the Carson Ryder series. An avid angler, canoeist and hiker, Kerley has traveled extensively throughout the South, especially coastal regions such as Mobile, Alabama, the setting for many of his novels, and the Florida Keys. He has a cabin in the Kentucky mountains, which appeared as a setting in Buried Alive. He lives in Newport, Kentucky, where he enjoys sitting on the levee and watching the barges rumble up and down the Ohio River.

Another fantastic book in the Carson Ryder Series.

One of my all-time favourite crime writers happens to be J.A Kerley, so of course when his new Carson Ryder book was released. I knew I just had to read it and I knew that I would love it also, as I have yet to find one of his books which I didn't love. It's hard to believe that we are up to #11 in the Carson Ryder series. Carson has left his previous job and his best friend and partner on the force and moved away to Key West, where he had hoped to live a semi-quiet life but it seems that two things always follow Carson know matter where he tries to disappear too - out of the box murders that no-one else can solve and of course his brother Jeremy Ridgecliff who in his own right is a serial killer . In the Memory Killer , someone is out there targeting the gay community and then giving them something to have the nightmare of their life and if that wasn't enough - he is removing something that is of importance to the victims, the worst thing for Carson though is that this killer is so good , that none of the victims when they come to it can identify or even give Carson something to go on in order to catch him. If this wasn't enough on Carson's plate , it seems he has bigger problems as his psycho brother Jeremy has gone off the grid and Carson can't get hold of him and when this happens - it normally means trouble. What has Jeremy got planned and up his sleeve and what will it mean for Carson Ryder ? Also Carson gets a blast from the past with the newcomer to the force.
Another fabulous book by J.A Kerley and if you love your mysteries and murder , then Carson Ryder is the guy for you.

Martha Collison is the youngest ever baker on The Great British Bake Off – she made it all the way to the quarter finals whilst studying for her AS Levels! Martha is a self-taught baker who started cooking at the age of eight – the result of her brave parents letting her loose in the kitchen and enjoying the (sometimes mixed) results. Since then her baking repertoire has grown no end, and she now balances studying part-time for her A Levels with writing and testing recipes for various purposes, including a monthly column in Waitrose Weekend as well as her own blog. An Interesting Twist

All the American word-check books that I could find were too expensive, so we got the British version. It's actually added fun, as it is full of words from Wales & Scotland that I'm not too sure would be found in the American version! We've also found it to be fun to allow unlimited checking rather than enforce the challenge rule. If someone takes a long time checking words, we usually dump all his/her letters out for everyone to try their hand at it. Then it's not boring to wait while an effort is made to find those elusive 7-letter masterpieces.

Tom Jones, ThemLife, was great. The hardships of growing up poor and then sick all worked to drive Tom to greatness. The story of the evolution of Tom to the man he is today is fascinating. Also his desire to be relevant keeps him, at 75, in the limelight as long as he wants. He will go out on his own terms.
