My Daughter's Favorite Book by Dr. Seuss

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.
To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish was her pick as the best of the books by Dr. Seuss.
One of the appeals of this book is that it is relatively easy to learn to read, yet has much more variety than most other early readers. So your child will feel like she or he has accomplished a lot with reading this book, which is correct.
The title gives the key to why this book works well as an early reader. One word is changed at a time, with a clear illustration next to it. There is another reward for you and your child: The book also previews many of the wonderful characters and rhyming schemes that appear in other Dr. Seuss books. As a result, it will be easier to get started reading those books. You will feel like you are seeing an old friend again.
You can also use each rhyme to take off on your own speculations. Our daughter used to love to come up with alternative rhymes that fit the pictures.
Books like this one make it great fun to be either a parent or a child. In some cases, this book will be there for you in both roles over 20 to 40 years!

A great book that doesn't drive parents nuts

The thing I like most about this book is it survives the perpetual-reading test, that is, neither my daughter nor I am tired of reading it after two years.
"One Fish..." is really composed of several "short" sections that can be read in any order, so for a toddler, it's perfectly fine to skip around. In fact, this is conducive to a toddler's randomness - one day it's "Hop hop hop, I am a Yop"; another day it's "From there to here."

Allright ya little PUNKS. You go read your Tom Clancys and your sappy Danielle Steel romance novels and your "Bridges of Madison County"s and we can even go back time to your Mark Twains and your "Catcher In The Rye"s, you go read ALL of that. Then read THIS book, and YOU tell me which one is better. Because NONE of that can match the emotional intensity of reading to your kids at bedtime: "Once there was a little Nook. On his hat he had a hook. On his hook he had a book. On his book was "How to Cook". But a Nook can't read and a Nook can't cook, so what good to a Nook is a hook cook book?" AWESOME!

The Looting Machine is an (often painfully) eye opening account of the systematic tearing-apart of some of Africa's most naturally resource rice countries. It offers an in depth - but gripping - expose of the corrupt kleptocratic regimes in power and the insidious impact of China - as well as pretty important assertions about the complicity of the West. Fascinating. Especially for someone who teaches Geography and Economics - this should be compulsory reading for any course about or discussion of the 'resource curse'.

Interesting, but a bit repetitive after a few chapters

One cannot fault the author for the sickening parade of graft and embezzlement that he describes. Unfortunately, most of the stories he tells were not news to me and after a while they end up being repetitive. The story is however very well told and the authors has clearly done a great deal of detective work investigating them.

About the Author
Clive Anthony Stace BSc, PhD, DSc graduated from the University of London in 1959 and gained his doctorate at the Natural History Museum, London in 1963. For the next 41 years he carried out research and teaching at the Universities of Manchester and Leicester, where he is now Emeritus Professor of Plant Taxonomy. He was President of the Botanical Society of the British Isles from 1987 to 1989. He has produced about 200 scientific papers and books, including the New Flora of the British Isles (1991). He was elected Honorary Fellow of the Linnean Society in 2004. Michael John Crawley FRS is an ecologist and Emeritus Professor of Biology at Imperial College London. His research focuses on plant ecology, with particular emphasis on the relationship between plants and their herbivores, and on the way that alien plants modify plant community dynamics. He serves as BSBI vice county recorder for Berkshire and for East Sutherland.

It seemed like a rough draft

I related to a lot of the writing, but I'm going to be honest -- I'm not sure how this book got published as it is. It seemed like a rough draft.

It was a short book that should have been much longer. It was just bizarre. The blog posts made no sense whatsoever and contributed nothing at all to the book. I couldn't keep the professional notes together because she didn't even use fake names -- just Dr. XXXX and so on. You couldn't keep that straight at all. I could relate to a lot of the reflective pieces of writing, actually, but as I went through the book more, the reflections became less and less. Then suddenly she's recovered. Doesn't say HOW, or her thoughts, or anything. She was good at explaining her disordered mind and then just said she was better. Huh? HOW HOW HOW? She apparently did it without professional help, too, which makes me even more curious how she got better. That's super impressive, so why did she not share any of this experience or insight?

If you ask me, this book shouldn't have been published 'as is.' It's missing so much, especially a decent conclusion. Yes, it will tell you what it's like to be a sufferer but it will not give you anything else at all. It really goes nowhere. And that was disappointing. No idea how this book was published...

About the Author
Eric Rucker Eddison was born in Adel, England, in 1882. His parents encouraged his spirited imagination. Boyhood days spent reading and adventuring in the northern English countryside with his constant companion, Arthur Ransome, provided rich material for his novels. Eddison was twice honoured, receiving the Order of St. Michael and St. George (1924) and the Order of the Bath (1929) for public service with the Board of Trade. His writings include the first complete translation of the Icelandic epic, Egil's Saga; the novels The Worm Oroboros and Stybiorn the Strong; and the trilogy Zimiamvia, including Mistress of Mistresses, A Fish Dinner in Memison, and the final book, The Mezentian Gate, which was left unfinished when he died suddenly of a stroke in 1945.

Read Book #3 first, then #2 and finally #1

A great series. Suggest you start, however with Book #3 of the Trilogy, The Mezentian Gate and then this book, A Fish Dinner in Memison, and then finally Book #1, Mistress of Mistresses last. This order is how the books progress #3,2,1, but not how they were written.

Even better is to read The Worm Ouroboros first a couple of times before the Zimiamvian Triology.

What's for Dinner?

F. Scott Fitzgerald once said he included no love scene between Nick and his paramour in "The Great Gatsby" because it was beyond his talent to write such a scene. This beautiful novel contains such scenes from start to finish and should be revered as a classic even if for no other reason. The women in this novel are goddesses, and the men so regard them. One even shape-shifts into a lynx on occasion. The men are swashbucklers; see the chapter "Seven Against the King" for a stirring example.
Eddison has a rich and arcane vocabulary. It would be good to have a dictionary at your side as you read. He writes in 17th century English prose, the prose of Shakespeare, Marlowe and Browne, though, unlike Shakespeare, he inserts no neologisms for you to stumble over. The book is a marvel, and I'm sure its companion volumes are likewise. I look forward to reading them in my old age, which is now. I had no idea anyone in this age could write so well. This is the exquisite beauty the renowned James Joyce so often strives for and misses. I give this my highest recommendation.

NLP explained in a Memorable, Humorous and Engaging way

I've been reading the latest book on NLP, penned in part by the co-founder of NLP, Dr Richard Bandler. The book is called The Ultimate Introduction NLP and is sub-titled How to Build a Successful Life. It is co-authored by NLP Master Trainers Owen Fitzpatrick and Alessio Roberti.

This is an interesting book that has an unusual structure. It uses the story of one man's personal change and discovery to help readers understand the principles of NLP.

It's the story of a man named Joe who attends a one-day introductory course given by Dr Bandler. Joe joins the other participants who are attending the course and learns with them how to apply the techniques in their personal and professional lives.

When you read the book you too become a participant on the course, in that you see what the others see, hear what they hear and learn what they learn. Dr Bandler's lectures are interspersed with the observations, thoughts and insights of Joe and the other participants.

Dr Bandler explains NLP in a memorable, humorous and engaging manner. I've read a lot of his work but I found some original material in this book. His way of teaching is direct and very accessible, making what can seem like difficult concepts easy to absorb and put into practice.

Among the techniques covered in this book are:
* Getting rid of bad memories
* Triggering a positive feeling with the skill of anchoring
* Amplifying positive feelings
* Eliminating negative feelings
* Building a better future

You will also learn about the power of non-verbal communication and how to ask powerful questions. But, above all, you will get useful insights into getting over the things that may be holding you back - phobias, bad habits, learning disorders and other drawbacks.

NLP - The Most Expensive Solution - Only for Professionals.

The book is well written and the exercises described during the seminar seem to work. This is a good introduction to NLP. Don't expect more than that because to actually learn NLP you will need to take several very expensive courses. NLP is really geared for the professional and not for someone looking to improve their life, career, finances, etc. The only way NLP can help you do that is if you take all the training yourself or you pay a certified practitioner or master practitioner and have them assist you in making the changes. Tony Robbins has been making a fortune with NLP(NAC) tools and he paid a hefty price to learn them. If you are interested in finding out a bit about NLP this book can help. If you are interested in actually learning NLP - you can find home study courses, with no support, starting at about $2,000.00. There are far less expensive or complex ways to make personal changes. NLP is geared and taught for professionals or an elite group of practitioners. NLP can only be learned by actually experiencing the exercises during a live training and continuously practicing what has been learned. Richard Bandler is releasing a prequel to this book (Feb. 2015). I didn't think you could get more basic than what he has done with the Ultimate Introduction to NLP. This book is an enjoyable read, but there is not much here in the way of usable NLP. Try Unlimited Power or NLP the New Technology. You will get more value for your time and money.

Short, Sweet, and Unique Introduction

This is a short (141pp.) introduction to neurolinguistic programming (NLP). NLP, in my opinion, is essentially a basket of diverse, practical psychological tools for self-improvement and helping others. Some of these tools are meditation, hypnosis, Pavlovian conditioning, and ways to better listen to and communicate with others. As the name suggests, this basket is normally held together by an extensive net of high-falutin' jargon. For instance, Pavlovian conditioning is called "anchoring." Asking specific interrogative questions is "meta-modeling."

This book is written by one of NLP's co-founders and two acolytes. While an introduction, it may well clarify some areas for people already familiar with NLP. I have read a number of NLP books and found this one unique and unusually readable.

This book is readable in that it is set up as a story involving several people going to one of the author's seminars and shows them practicing the techniques, having questions, and applying the techniques to their lives. This makes the concepts more comprehensible than in a straight-up explanatory book. Especially helpful are the last two chapters (18pp.) which beautifully summarize and reinforce the book's key points.

It is unique in that it explains what NLP does without the mind-numbing extensive jargon of most NLP books. Still, the main elements of the jargon are there, but so easily and naturally defined and explained that this book might be helpful for those with more experience, and confusion, with NLP.

One warning: to get the most out of NLP you need to develop your powers of visualization, both for sound and feeling as well as sight. Some of NLP's elements may sound goofy, and are regularly attacked by establishment psychologists. But NLP has a lot of loyal followers, so why not try some of its techniques? This book is a good start.

Why only 4 stars? The book is short and at the end advertises Bandler's "products" to an extent I find annoying.
