Vintage Recipes

Since no one has taken the time to review this lovely book, I will. I picked this up recently at a secondhand shop and I'm so happy I did.
I tend to prefer real food versus the instant, convenient foods we eat these days. This cook book is perfectly suited to my lifestyle and preferences. You will find unusual recipes in here like gurkas dulisas, tea eggs, cumin seed wafers, olive canape spread, pate beau monde, crab mousse ring, cucumber aspic, lobster potage, rogan jaush, sweetbreads in mushroom sauce, greek walnut cake and more.
The difference here is the terrific use of spices you may already have sitting in your kitchen cupboard. What a great way to use them! I'm making the greek walnut cake (it's more like a torte) as we speak!

spice islands cook book

First tried this cookbook in 1965, and have since found nothing not to my liking. Have made the Vichysoisse cold, it was smooth and a delightful addition to the meal. The addition of Beau Monde to the Eggs Benedict has to be tried to appreciate. Finally the Greek Walnut Cake which turns out like a Angel Food,with the recommended Ginger Whipped Cream with vanilla brandy must have been stolen from the Greek pantheon. Only the most strict self control will prevent it from being consumed at first sitting.

Charming and Informative

This is a lovely cookbook from the early 1960's. It starts off with a history of of the spice trade, has a brief "how to use" section and is then followed by a wide variety of recipes. Each page has a whimsical drawing on it, so the pages are as fun to look at as the recipes are to read. The last sections of the book include a description for each herb or spice, and the suggested uses to best showcase it, followed by an herb chart for quick and easy reference. This is the kind of book I can imagine my grandma or mom having and using when they were in their cooking heyday!
