Read This Review Before You Buy

I purchased The Subject Bible just last week, as part of my professional expense account through my church. My only advice to those of you who are pondering this type of purchase is to know exactly what you're getting before you buy. Upon receiving it you will discover that it weighs about 4 lbs and that its cover is not exactly durable - kind of a cross between bonded leather and the flimsy cardboard of a gift and award Bible. The font of the biblical text is a vision-friendly large print. But the word clarifications are not at all consistent throughout the text. For example, I have just finished reading through Genesis. Only about half of all the necessary word clarifications were provided in the text. The other half I had to look up on a KJV definitions website every single time I came to an archaic word that was not but should have been clarified. Some of my efforts yielded the following results: peradventure (perhaps); clave (clung); wit/wot (know/knew); issue (offspring); activity (diligence). All these clarifications were NOT provided in the actual text of the Subject Bible.
Physically, the Subject Bible is broken down into three sections: the complete text of the King James Version, A Complete Analysis of The Whole Bible Arranged in Subjects (which was compiled not by Power Publishing, nor by Dr. Everette Gaddy, but by Dr. Roswell Hitchcock, Late President of Union Theological Seminary in New York),and a Subject Index. The claim Dr. Gaddy makes that you can read exhaustively on any subject in the Bible is true, insofar as the Analysis divides its subjects. The subjects are divided into 27 categories: Scripture, God, Jesus, Idolatry/Superstition, Works of God, Miracles, Mediums and Methods of Revelation, Duties to God, Angels/Good and Evil, Genealogies and Catalogues, The Hebrews, Other Nations, The Outward Man, External Nature, Industrial Employments and Products, The Family, Masters and Servants, Civil and Social Life, War, Fallen Man, Man Redeemed, Sacred Seasons, Sacred Places, Sacred Persons and Offices, Sacred Rites and Forms, Trials and Persecution, and Eschatology. I have found these categories to challenge and stretch my thinking in terms of their organization. Also, subcategories are logically designated within each category.
I do not at all regret my purchase. I do much counseling in my ministry, and the subject Bible is a great aid in this way. But I caution you to know exactly what you are getting when you are buying this Bible. Primarily, a less than ideal cover, a complete King James Version, a virtually copied/pasted/published Subject Analysis from a late seminary president, a subject index, and inconsistent word clarifications. Is this Bible really worth $100? Maybe if the cover was genuine leather. Otherwise, if I had to do it over, I wouldn't pay more than $60 for it. At the same time, now that I have it, this has now become the Bible I use for my primary study and quiet times because of the large print and wide margins. Those are the upsides and those are the downsides. From this point, it's your call. Just know what you're getting before you give up a Benjamin for it.
