About the Author

Holly Smale is the author of Geek Girl, Model Misfit and Picture Perfect. I think this is one of my favourite series so whe I hear a fourth book was coming out I was delighted.

Firstly,why I love this series:
· I think Harriet has a really unique voice
·I love all the terrible situations she finds herself in,and how easily she resolves them in the end,with the help of a kind family member/friend
·I love Annabel and Richard,they are hilarious

Secondly,what happens in the book?*SPOILER ALERT*
First off,Harriet is still settling in with her little sister Tabitha.She starts high school(spoiler:it goes disastrously wrong on the first day).
After a while she notices that Nat and Toby are ignoring her,to the point of being rude.Alexa is being characteristically nasty but soon the tables turn.......
Harriet is pressurized into throwing a party,at which there is many shocks and Harriet eventually accepts herself.

Thirdly,what I thought:
I thought it was a little boring but overall a good book.. can't wait for the next one!

A story full of heart and sorrow

I'd had 'Grace' sitting on my Kindle for ages, watching all the raving reviews and awards come rolling in! I knew it was going to be good - and I knew it was going to be sad - so sort of in the way I absolutely can't wait for and simultaneously dread reading John Green books, I waited for the 'optimum time' to start reading. Happy to report that the optimum time to read Beyond Grace's Rainbow is any damn time at all!

We follow the eponymous Grace - a single mother of a toddler due to her ex-boyfriend's alcoholism - in her battle with leukaemia. Grace is flanked with an amazing cast of supporting characters. Grace is the heart of the story, but each of the supporting cast has its own story arc that you can't help but get involved in. And on top of the sob-fest, there's also a rather gripping mystery sub-plot as Grace's friends rush to discover the identity of her biological father in the hopes that he will be a bone marrow donor match and save their friend's life.

It's a story of extremes - but not in the way that you should be put off by fear that the cancer storyline makes it heavy-handed or mawkish. At times the book is genuinely funny! I particularly loved Abby's attempts at speed dating - it's a little Sex & the City (but where the city is Dublin!).

A story full of heart and sorrow.

This is only the first half of book 5 of A Song of Ice and Fire

Unfortunately I was too hasty in ordering this book and didn't realize it was only the first half of Book 5 of A Song of Ice and Fire. Other than that the book was great...maybe a little pricey considering this cost almost twice as much as the mass market paperback version of the book that has both halves.

Stars Reflect the Author's Work

While Book 5, Part 1 of The Song of Ice and Fire series continues the stories of characters that readers who have stuck with the series have come to care about, the author seems to have lost his way a bit. New characters? Do we care? We want to again embrace the stories of the characters with whom we are familiar. The world in which they live has been thoroughly and colorfully imagined, described at great length throughout the books. Great length, however, is becoming a handicap. Another part of Book 5 follows this one and a Book 6 is promised. All this verbage could be self-defeating. Martin is a fabulous and engaging writer, no question, but he seemed to care less in Book 4 about the tautness of his tales and has only partially recovered in this book. The task he set himself in creating a complete fantasy world seems to have begun to overwhelm him and his solution of choice has been to produce more words than are really needed. I have also been disappointed with his inclusion of common modern expressions that seem out of place in his world, e.g., "are we there yet?" I noticed this little idiosyncracy in Book 4 as well. Such slips are jarring and out of place in a fantasy epic. I have not finished reading this book and may be rewarded at the end with improvement in the author's style and plot choices, but I'm not holding my breath. Reading the book has become a slog through mud, really quite tiring. I'm hoping for better in the future books.

This was misrepresented as the complete 5th book in series. Unaware UK split volume and not made clear. It was in perfect condition at least and arrived on time, but only later realized not what I expected.

In SAINT ODD, our hero again returns to his hometown, Pico Mundo. Unfortunately for that town, however, the satanic cult, overcome so recently, has also returned in force. This time, the satanists are ready to wreak havoc on the town's inhabitants in an even more violent way.

Like the other books in the series, SAINT ODD involves evil forces versus good. In SAINT ODD, our hero makes a return to the carnival setup at Pico Mundo, where he and Stormy first got the fortune teller card. You might recall that it was the "gypsy mommy" who handed them that very special card--a card that would change both their lives forever. Now standing at that same place again, Odd chooses to receive another card from the same gypsy mommy. But the message he receives is not at all what he expected.

SAINT ODD completes the Odd Thomas series. SAINT ODD reprises some of the curious characters who appeared in the prior books. Do you remember Edie Fischer, the rich lady driving the limo? (Recall that she hired Odd briefly as her chauffeur.) Edie again makes a timely appearance, and we learn a lot more about her--as well as her connection to Stormy. Also, Odd's best friend, the rotund author, Ozzie Boone, makes his appearance. You might also remember the mysterious, perpetually 8-months pregnant Annamaria from the prior installment. She's quite a mysterious figure, and we will learn more about her. And of course, what would a Dean Koontz book be without a special passage regarding a beloved dog? This touching encounters takes place near the very end of the book. (I should mention, if you haven't read the author's precious, true story about his "Golden," check out, A Big Little Life.)

In all of modern literature, I think Odd Thomas might be the most endearing, likeable character. Odd is a modest fellow, as he again declares, "I'm a fry cook, at my best when working the griddle, master of the spatula, maker of pancakes so light they seem about the float off your plate." Of course, we readers know very well that Odd Thomas is anything except JUST a fry cook. We all know by now that Thomas can see the spirits of the recently dead, and that he has an assortment of very unusual psychic/spiritual abilities. Most of his encounters with the newly dead are peaceful encounters. He reminds us, however, that sometimes a vengeful ghost can create havoc: "I had lost a perfectly good stereo system to a poltergeist when I was 17."

In SAINT ODD, the reader is again treated to imaginative descriptions of unusual situations. Here's one: Odd Thomas finds himself in a bit of a bind, and he worries about being bitten by a vampire bat. He notes that "people were rarely bitten by vampire bats." And then, "I didn't find the word RARELY as comforting as the word NEVER." Likewise, when Odd admits he is afraid that he might get eaten by beetles, he remarks: "It was not my fate to be BEETLED to death." [my caps]

√ All in all, SAINT ODD is an outstanding work, a fitting cap to this wonderful, endearing series. Of all the books written by this master author, this book might just be one of his best. If you have not yet read the other books in the series, I strongly encourage you to stop--do not read this book yet. You will thank me for it later. Much of the intricacy of this book depends upon readers understanding what has come before.

Like all of the other Odd Thomas books in the series, SAINT ODD is a pleasure to read--so don't rush it. Especially as you near the finish of this book, slow down, and savor every word. The second to last chapter, Chapter 52, is one of the finest, most meaningful chapters in all of Koontz' books. All I can say is, the author is a wonderfully gifted writer, and this review does not do justice to this work.

TRIVIA FOR LOVERS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
As many readers probably already know, the author was an English teacher before he achieved fame as an author. Thus, the author is a master of the English language. For example, I was delighted to see that the author knew precisely how to use the word "balustrade." Many writers do not use this word properly, but of course Dean Koontz gets it exactly right when he uses the word in chapter 2. Yes, I admit this is a rather slight observation, but it shows you how careful the author is when he constructs his narratives--he is a master of DETAIL.

NEW VOCABULARY WORDS
I frequently read books by Dean Koontz with a dictionary close by. Then, I like to make a list of all the new vocabulary words I have learned. In SAINT ODD, I learned 14 new words. Here they are: PURLING, ASPERGILLUM, RECONDITE, TAINTER, GREENSWARD, CRENELLATED, MELANGE, VOLPLANED, CELADON, JACARANDA (tree), FINIAL, ANTIMACASSAR, AMARANTH, TRAVERTINE.

SERIES NOTE
Depending upon how you count the books, this is actually the 7th or 8th book in the series. Some fans consider
Odd Interlude: A Special Odd Thomas Adventure not really part of the main series, and refer to that book as book #4.5. Using that numbering system, this is the seventh book. If you include ODD INTERLUDE as a separate book in the series, then this is actually #8 in the series. In the last chapter, Odd Thomas himself notes that he penned seven memoirs before this book, thus making SAINT ODD number eight.

Almost--But Not Quite--There.

Odd Thomas is, without a doubt, one of the most endearing and enduring characters in the modern horro/thriller/para-normal genre--and Dean Koontz has carried Odd's tale as beautifully in this book as he did in the earlier books in the series. I did notice there were fewer "jewels" in this one--those surprising snippets and turns of phrase that catch you unawares when you reach them. There are fewer jewels in this book--but those there are glow all the brighter for their rarity.

Koontz is a word smith with very little (if any) true competition in his genre--in fact, for his use of rich subtext and complex emotional landscapes, the only writers who come close in my opinion would be Sparks (particularly The Wedding) who is NOT in this genre-- and Stephen King on his more coherent and less sanguinary days :-).

Like all of Koontz's work, the characters in this book shine--beyond that, they glow. They have grown through the course of the series, and though the ending was on the macro scale absolutely set in stone, the circumstances surrounding it were fluid enough to allow for some rather inventive details. Even though I knew how it would end, I was still almost surprised when it ended as expected. I wished for something--more. I'm not even entirely sure what was "missing" from this ending--it is something so subtle I really can't name it. But--I know it's there.

This in my opinion is an excellent finale to Dean Koontz's "Odd Thomas" series. I'd already read a hardback copy from my local library, but wanted my own copy. :)
When my new paperback copy of "Saint Odd" arrived, I re-read it 'cause it'd been a little while since I'd read the library-copy. It was still good. And it was delivered on time, too. :)

About the Author

Outstanding Writer

Matthew Plampin is an outstanding writer. His book was well researched and his use of the English language is wonderful. It has been many years since I have read a book so very well done. For people who like biographies and writing with depth this is a book for you. I ordered all of his books that are available I enjoyed this one sooo much.
