ABRIDGED!!!!

Why would you abridge Richard Scarry? I was shocked to find this book much thinner than the version I remember from childhood, and the writing has been "updated" as well. Really a shame, and a shabby way to treat a wonderful children's classic.

Best Children's Book Ever

Wish I could give this 10 stars. I discovered this book as a preschooler in 1968. My mom would take me to the local library every week. I checked it out from the library and I was hooked. I wanted to check it out at every visit, so my mom had the library order a copy for me. I remember even before I could read the words, I completely understood the story from the illustrations. I still have that original edition. It is tatered but still intact. I bought another copy this year for my preschool sons. They absolutely love it as well as the other Scarry book I had as a child, Busy Busy World. The newer book is the abridged edition. The abridged edition has 63 pages as compared to the ~95 pages in the original. They removed 4 stories from the original: busy (stay at home) mom, water treatment plants, electricity and how we get it, and Sgt. Murphy the Busytown policeman. Why? Somebody at the publisher must have had a lobotomy. Anyway, we keep the original up in a closet to read only with adult supervision. The new one is on the shelf, readily accesible to the kids.
This book (even the abridged edition) is an absolute classic.

Still awesome.

I had this when I was 4 and gave it to my oldest daughter when she turned 4, some 15 years ago.
I got this one for my youngest and she's loving it as much as I and my oldest did. The only thing that bothers me is that it's abridged.
Not sure why there has to be an abridged version of this classic for little ones, but it's still awesome, just a little less so.

Typeset OK but illustrations all removed

The book contains the ful text and does not share the mis-scans and formatting problems of the e-book that were a constant distraction. However, this edition has NONE of the illustrations which existed in prior editions. To me that is a great disappointment. Not only do we miss drawings of Gorice, Juss, Brandoch Daha and others, but even the end-of-chapter illustrations are missing. The map of Mercury may be of marginal value but it cannot be found here either, though I recall seeing it in an Eddison volume back in the 1960s or 70s. I would look for an earlier printing if possible. This one is far better than the e-book, but worse than prior editions.
The story is of course a classic and well worth the read. (I would urge readers to check out at least the last chapter too of Styrbiorn the Strong also.)

Claire Douglas has worked as a journalist for fifteen years writing features for women's magazines and national newspapers, but she's dreamed of being a novelist since the age of seven. She finally got her wish after winning the Marie Claire Debut Novel Award, with her first novel, THE SISTERS. She lives in Bath with her husband and two children.

The Sisters I've often wondered what it would be like to be a twin

We recently received a complimentary copy of the book, "The Sisters" by Claire Douglas for our review. All opinions are our own.

The Sisters

I've often wondered what it would be like to be a twin. I could imagine the connection that twins have. Let alone the pain the other one would feel when the other one died.

There are two main sets of characters in this book, which also happen to be twins. Abi and Lucy and Bea and Ben.

Abi and Lucy are twin sisters, whose lives are changed forever due to a tragic accident.

Bea & Ben were twins who were separated when they were very young. They actually met in college and became involved without knowing they were siblings.

While reading this novel, you will go back and forth from current day to the past as the characters reflect on their pasts.

This was the first time I have read anything by this author. I thought the book read pretty fast. I thought I had figured out how the book would end, however, that changed the closer to the ending.

The only complaint that I have is that the consistent mentioning of the different brands of products.

Overall, it was a good book and I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Abi is trying to recover from a breakdown after her twin sister, Lucy's death. It's not easy because she "sees" Lucy everywhere she goes. One day while sitting in a cafe - she sees "Lucy" again and decides to face her. Thank goodness for her sanity it's not Lucy, but someone named Beatrice. Abi takes Beatrice up on her offer and attends the art show she is having at her house. It's not long before Abi & Beatrice becomes fast friends.

Beatrice is so smitten with Abi - she asks her to move in with her. (Pause)

Reread the sentence above... I'll wait!!

I knew my husband for two years before he suggested we move in together. It took me two weeks to give him my decision.

So when Beatrice asked Abi to live with her - I screamed - "Abi, Think about it." Then I put myself in Abi's shoes. Abi lives alone - works as a freelance reporter (when she wants to take assignments) - and spend most of her days reliving the events that led up to Lucy's death. Also, Beatrice said Abi can live with her rent free. That's a great incentive to move in with friends.

Beatrice doesn't live alone. Living with her is her twin brother, Ben, and a few of Bea's artist friends. Beatrice does have one rule - No fraternizing with roommates. That doesn't stop the sparks from flying between Abi & Beatrice's brother, Ben.

Once Abi moves in the house - the "games" begin. Friends become enemies - enemies becomes friends. Does Beatrice know more about Abi than she is letting on? What secrets is Beatrice hiding? What secrets is Abi hiding? The two of them have more in common than they know?

The Sisters is a riveting psychological thriller that will send chills up your spine. The plot is well-written, the characters are flawed, and the twists and turns will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about these characters. The suspense was oozing from the pages. You won't know who to trust. I do have to mention that story takes place in Bath, so I enjoyed adding new words to my vocabulary.

I received some sample Busy Ant materials and was very impressed, yet again the resources were of high quality and supports children's understanding in an engaging way. The resources matched the national curriculum really well and have clear progression across units of work. The lessons have opportunities to be differentiated in 5 ways and the units are flexible and give teachers the opportunities to be creative. I am extremely impressed with the online planning tool and am really looking forward to implementing this scheme of work across years 3 and 4 and then into years 1 and 5 next year. About the Author

Lucy Holliday’s first major work, a four-line poem called ‘The Postman is Very Good’, was completed shortly before her fifth birthday. It was such an enjoyable experience that she has wanted to be a writer ever since.

She is married with a daughter and lives in Wimbledon.

I had not read the first book bit Holliday gave enough (but not too much) of the back story so that I could enjoy this without f

This is light and it's silly (and totally preposterous) but it's a decent read. I had not read the first book but Holliday gave enough (but not too much) of the back story so that I could enjoy this without feeling as though I was missing something. Libby is an interesting character-more so than Marilyn Monroe, who should be more of a cautionary tale than a giver of advice. THanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. Try this if you'd like something a little different.

Hobbits and wizards and Sauron--oh, my! Mild-mannered Oxford scholar John Ronald Reuel Tolkien had little inkling when he published The Hobbit; Or, There and Back Again in 1937 that, once hobbits were unleashed upon the world, there would be no turning back. Hobbits are, of course, small, furry creatures who love nothing better than a leisurely life quite free from adventure. But in that first novel and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo and their elvish friends get swept up into a mighty conflict with the dragon Smaug, the dark lord Sauron (who owes much to proud Satan in Paradise Lost), the monstrous Gollum, the Cracks of Doom, and the awful power of the magical Ring. The four books' characters--good and evil--are recognizably human, and the realism is deepened by the magnificent detail of the vast parallel world Tolkien devised, inspired partly by his influential Anglo-Saxon scholarship and his Christian beliefs. (He disapproved of the relative sparseness of detail in the comparable allegorical fantasy his friend C.S. Lewis dreamed up in The Chronicles of Narnia, though he knew Lewis had spun a page-turning yarn.) It has been estimated that one-tenth of all paperbacks sold can trace their ancestry to J.R.R. A worthy addition to anyone's collection

Since at this point these books no longer need an introduction, I might as well go straight into the review of this edition, the Deluxe Pocked Boxed Set. It features leatherette covers, which are soft and very well made. The colors are less saturated than they are in Amazon's picture, but that is for the better. They are definitely nice and easy to hold, and the "stand" it comes with is sturdy and beautiful. I decided to put them in my desk, and they could not have gotten a better place. The only complaint that might arise is that the font is small, but that is to be expected from a "pocket" edition, and it is readable anyway. Overall, the quality of this edition is magnificent. If you are a fan, this relatively inexpensive set should definitely be added to your collection. If you haven't read the books, stop reading this and go buy them. Seriously. Now.

Very nice set of books for the price. Recommended. Read review and view pics for detail on font for pocket-sized "paperback."

Very nice books, binding seems nice. I love the covers although they are not "paperback" and are more of a fake leather material. These books are beautiful and very convenient. They are pocket-sized which is great for on the go, they aren't too small or too big (actually bigger than I anticipated which is a plus). The font size is readable, the only thing I would have to note is that the font size isn't the same throughout the different books. The font size seems to be based on the length of the books, the longer the books are, the smaller the font is (I suppose this was in order to keep them pocket-sized as well as consistent with the sizes of the other books throughout the set). If you have decent to good eyes, this set would be perfectly fine for you on the go but those people who don't have as good of eye sight, because I know some people who tend to get headaches while focusing on small font, this set may not be for you. I will upload some pics of the font comparisons, books, etc.

Great Book, *NOT* a leather binding

Only an balrog could object to an revised 50th anniversary edition, with corrections beyond those in the the standard revised version. BUT...

This is *not* a leather binding: it's a very ordinary hardcover edition with paper-thin faux leather glued over paper boards. The bookmark ribbon breaks the binding. Signatures glued rather than sewn together, not held together by the 'leather,' separated from paper spine. Poor production generally: end papers badly centered, more than a little random glue and rubber cement on the covers that really mars the appearance. Mine is the second printing, I do not see the poor type-setting complained of by other reviewers.

Look at Customer Image #18 to see for your self.

It's an OK one-volume edition, given the revisions and illustrations. *NOT* a 'collectible', barely worth the discounted $56 given the disappointment factor. *Don't* give this as a gift to a Tolkien fan, expecting rapture.

Calling this 'leather bound' is *serious* misrepresentation of the product.
