Wow! A great overview of world history

This is a great overview of world history, which at only 432 pages is not meant to discuss any topic in the depth. For instance, the US Civil War and the Reconstruction that followed are covered in only 2 pages. I mention this not because I consider it a deficiency, but rather to illustrate that since all of the history of all of the world is covered, any individual topic must, of necessity, be covered in a somewhat cursory manner. However, none of my many history books exceed this one in its scope or pictorial quality. Nor do they exceed the way it gives one a feeling for the flow of history and the forces that drive it.

The book begins with the pre-history (before any type of written record) of human origins and culture and ends with the state of the world at the beginning of the 21st century (up to 2006). The book covers the whole world, not just those facets of history that impact Europe and North America. There are sections on Asia, South East Asia, India, Africa, South America, Australia and the Middle East. The book is copiously illustrated and contains many maps and timelines. The maps are historical maps that not only show geographical features but also focus on topics such as historical boundaries, the migration of people, and military events. There are economic charts and graphs and photographs of historical artifacts. In addition to the typical bibliography and index, the book also contains a 38-page glossary, which is a mini-encyclopedia of sorts that provides one-paragraph entries on many people, places and events.

One question that should be addressed when assessing a book like this one is whether, given the Internet (especially Wikipedia), this book is necessary. I think that the answer is decidedly yes. The Internet is great at ferreting out facts about specific topics, whereas this book shows how they are related and points to people, places and events worthy of greater study. This is a great gift for a student at any level and for anyone interested in history.

Not for those of us who know little about history

First of all, I admit there is no one to blame but myself for my appalling lack of knowledge about world history. I wasn't required to take any history courses for my college degree, so I didn't. However, I thought that I might begin to remedy that by purchasing this book. Some reviewers said it would be an excellent resource for someone like me. I am about 1/3 through it and feel only a tiny bit more knowledgable. I think there's simply too much information, in too condensed a form, to help someone like me. I was hoping to get more a of a feel for various names (such as Hannibal and Charlemagne) and events that I have heard referenced through the years, but I'm simply not. I also think it's every bit as dry as the history books of my youth, so maybe that's why I'm not more engaged. I'll need to buckle down and read several books and/or take some college courses. I guess it's just not realistic to think that I can grasp world history by looking at one book.

I also find the format of the book to be frustrating. Places are mentioned in the text that aren't shown on the maps and vice versa. Much of the text and many of the maps go too deep into the crease of the book, forcing me to crane my neck sideways and push down hard on the spine of the book to try to see what's down in there. AND...even with my reading glasses, I strain to see much of the text; so much of the font is TINY...really teeny-tiny, so it's not so great for the over-Fifty crowd of which I am a proud member.

I suppose if you love history, or if you are currently taking world history courses, this book could help you refresh your memory and see things in a larger context, but it just doesn't seem to be helping me in my quest to become more history literate.

Excellent Atlas

This is what I was expecting from a historical atlas. While I would personally prefer to do away with some of the commentary, it is not overbearing in scope (compare to National Geographic Historical Atlas of the United States). The atlas starts with a 13p timeline of world history divided between Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and tech. The next 330pp are principally devoted to maps. The maps take up roughly 60% of the text. Generally a large map appears on the odd pages, periodically with some text. The even pages describe the historical significance of the map, with an additional 1 to 3 inset sized maps. Additionally, some room has been set aside for a period picture suitable to the subject. After a 5p essay upon reaching the present state of the world, the atlas concludes with a 36p glossary and a 28p index.

Out of a quick perusal of the text there were only a few maps I found wanting: the European Axis advances of WWII, and then the Allied advances of WWII. Considering the marks against only 2 maps, (not pages, just maps) I think that rates an excellent.

So why 4 stars? I find a minor issue with some of the large scale maps. In an effort to add geographical perspective, some maps are shown at oblique angles such that one sees the curvature of the Earth. In a few instances it leads to some interesting geometrical effects that affect the readability of the map. In some places it helps to show the global perspective, such as nuclear deterrence with the US vs. USSR. Others, such as the monarchies of Renaissance Europe or the English Industrial Revolution, leave me scratching my head.

In defense of another post, this books focus on wars and battles is balanced well and not overbearing. Further to the point, a focus on wars, battles, and "exploration" is quite important to the history of borders, demographics, and conquest as that is generally the mechanism by which the world changes (see Crimea, 2014; Yugoslavia, 1990-99). Overall, this is an excellent atlas and a great addition to my library.

About the Author
Peter Chasseaud is a historian of military cartography, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, the founder of the Historical Military Mapping Group of the British Cartographic Society, a member of the Defence Surveyors' Association, and the author of definitive works on trench mapping and toponymy. Imperial War Museums are a family of five museums in England that seek to provide for and encourage the study and understanding of the history of modern war and "wartime experience."

Another very good Great War book!

Another good book about the War to end all Wars. Probably a niche market for this book, especially for cartographers or geographers. I especially liked the section on airplanes and zeppelins. Also thought the submarine section was pretty decent. Overview of Russian Revolution and its impact on the war was very good. Some good photos. For those who may be planning a trip to locate and explore the sites of many of these famous battles. Or those who just want to put the battles into a geographical perspective. I gleaned more info than I possessed before reading the book, which for me is always a good indicator. Descriptions accompanying maps help put everything into perspective.

Useless Maps

I chose this book because of the maps which turned out to be useless. They are not readable and amount to no more than a selling point for online shoppers who don't have the luxury of physically inspecting the book. Otherwise the book is pretty good and I would have rated it higher had I not bought it primarily for the maps.

Great book - but don't buy the paperback!

My rating applies ONLY to the quality of the paperback edition I purchased; the book itself is wonderful and everyone should read it. However, I would strongly urge anyone considering buying the book to spring for a good used hard cover edition. The typography of the paperback is almost nauseatingly bad - the font is fairly small, about a 9 or 10, and the rough quality of the paper gives the printing a blurry appearance that actually made me a bit queasy after a couple of pages. Buy a used hard cover and you'll save your eyes - along with a few trees!

Great collective biography of a remarkable group

For years, a small number of Oxford dons and fellows, as well as some of their friends, met in a local pub on Tuesdays to drink beer, hold discussions on such matters as mythology, morality, and literature, and read aloud the things they had been writing. Perhaps more important than these meetings were the Thursday night gatherings in the rooms of CS Lewis at Magdalen college. This group, which included such intellectual giants as Lewis, JRR Tolkien, and Charles Williams, was known as "The Inklings."
Much of "The Hobbit," "The Lord of the Rings," and Lewis's Space Trilogy were read in these meetings. Lewis also read much of his apologetic work to the group. The Inklings have had an enormous effect on the world of fantasy and Christian apology, and this biography by Humphrey Carpenter attempts to examine, in detail, just what occurred at these meetings, and what the effect was on those who participated.
Actually, this book is more of a biography on CS Lewis than on the rest of the members. Carpenter, who wrote a separate biography on Tolkien, does not elaborate much on the creator of "The Lord of the Rings", but rather spends most of his time on Lewis, who was, after all, the life of the group. Despite the focus on Lewis, however, there is a large section devoted to the life and times of Charles Williams, another principal member of the group. By using Lewis's life as a narrative, Carpenter is able to explore the composition and disposition of the Inklings as a group, as well as discuss their collective impact on the world of literature, fantasy, and criticism.
This biography is well-written, and covers its subject well. The Inklings were a fascinating group of men, and this book provides much information and detail about the group as a whole that is difficult to glean from a biography which focuses on just one of the members. Unfortunately, this volume is not currently available in the US, and must be obtained either from Amazon.uk or from a used bookseller. Despite the difficulty in obtaining the book, however, this is a fascinating and worthwhile look at the Inklings.

The first point I have to make is to paraphrase a comment that Tolkien made about "The Lord of the Rings" - it's too short. Not so much that it's sketchy, or leaves anything really important out, but that it is such a nicely written, warm yet at times sharply critical, and compelling work that I just wish there were even more to it.

The book functions in some ways as a sequel to Carpenter's earlier J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography, published the previous year (1977). Essentially this volume is a history of the informal Oxford literary group from which the title is taken, which was active from sometime in the 1930s (accurate records weren't kept) through 1963, the year of C.S. Lewis' death. As Lewis was the "founder" of the club, more or less (though it had it's origins earlier in a society that he did not belong to, which ended in 1933), the book begins with and is more largely concerned with him than the other members. The club was never a formal institution, merely a social group that met for most of it's history twice a week - Tuesdays at an Oxford pub called The Eagle and Child (aka The Bird and Baby), and Thursday evenings at the quarters shared by Lewis and his older brother W.H. (Warnie). It wasn't a group that expounded any particularly significant literary theories, and it can't be said as an institution itself to have been particularly influential, so it is really only through the fame of Tolkien, Lewis, and (to a much lesser extent) Charles Williams that it has been remembered, even immortalized.

There are four parts, each divided into a few chapters. The parts are not titled but are easily and simply described: the first part mostly describes the early life and education of Lewis (generally called "Jack") and his meeting Tolkien at Oxford; the second, the early life and entrance of Charles Williams into the society; third, the "height" of the Inklings, which coincides exactly with the Second World War, ending with the death of Williams in 1945; and the fourth part describing Tolkien and Lewis as their literary fame grew (with Lewis' Christian writings and "Narnia" books, and Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings") in the 1950s, Lewis' late marriage to a divorced American poet and novelist named Joy Gresham, and finally the deaths of Joy and shortly afterwards, of Jack. It's the last part that is the least-developed and shortest, and though I wouldn't have minded seeing more space devoted to this period, I can understand that in the context of "the Inklings" as a whole, it's less important.

There are short sketches of other members of the group - men now almost totally forgotten - including Warnie Lewis (a career army officer, and later the author of a half-dozen books about 17th century France), Owen Barfield, David Cecil, Neville Coghill and Hugo Dyson (who achieved some odd cultish status as an actor in PETULIA late in life) - but the bulk of the book is concerned with biographies of Lewis and Williams, and their literary careers and relationships with each other and Tolkien. I'm not sure that Carpenter ever quite solves the question of what made this group so special, what each had to offer the others, and how they influenced each other and why two have remained world-famous while the other has languished in obscurity since his untimely death; but it's not necessarily his intention. This is more history, and to some extent an account of the emotional and spiritual journeys of these men - all conservative Christians though all quite different in their faiths.

It's a fabulous book overall, essential I think to anyone interested in any of these figures; it's definitely spurred my interest in the obscure Charles Williams, whose Arthurian cycle Taliessin Through Logres is reputedly one of the odder and more challenging epic poetry cycles of the past century. Carpenter really paints a beautiful portrait of the often tortured and morose Lewis, his struggles with faith and with his own irascible nature and the reactionary and progressive sides of his very divided nature. The book doesn't come off as being written from a particular religious perspective - I couldn't tell you if the author was a man of faith himself or not - and Carpenter is quite detached when viewing the battles between this group of generally conservative Oxford dons with their changing society - he never takes sides with either the old-fashioned Lewis or his (for a time) mortal enemy, the high modernist T.S. Eliot, for example, preferring often to let the participants in the various squabbles have their say in their own words. But he does do an excellent job of describing Lewis' religious journey (if such a thing really can be described), and Williams' fairly odd interests in the occult and a more "ecstatic" form of Christianity.

Obviously this will only be of interest to anyone passionate about any of these writers, but to all such people I would recommend it very highly. There are several pages of photos (black and white), of all the important participants, brief biographical sketches and a bibliography of Lewis, Tolkien and Williams, and an index. It's unfortunate that this book is out of print in the USA now, but used copies can be gotten fairly easily, here and elsewhere, in a range of prices. I have the hardcover American first edition (red dustjacket) and it's a nice one to own.

I didn't particularly care for any of the characters - so that makes it difficult to give a high review. I personally would have ditched these so-called friends long ago and been on the look out for some others. And I find it hard to believe that thirty-one year old women still talk and act like silly teenagers. Hmmm. So many 5-star reviews. I guess maybe I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud. The reason I even gave it 3 stars is I liked the idea of the way each chapter begins and ends. I'll let you read the book to see what I mean by that.

Good But Incomplete

I built a log cabin in the 1980's using this book and two others. The cabin is still dry and clean and will probably stand for another 100 years, especially after adding a steel roof 8 years ago.

There is some very good information on various parts of the cabin. The book falls short in a few areas, however, because of newer technologies and available materials that can help keep a cabin strong and insect free for much longer. For instance, the use of "oakem" and mud for chinking which would always need replacing, perhaps yearly. A much better lifetime product would be PermaChink which you can find on the internet. Another example would be the building of cement piers without instructing about the use of a termite shield. A simple piece of angled flashing will keep termites from ever touching any wood of the cabin as long as the sill is at least 2 inches from the soil.

But these are things that COULD be added in an update. The info that was used looks like something from the 50s, so it's no surprise that the book is dated. However most of the log construction methods are solid. The tools may have changed but the concepts are basically the same.

If you are truly interested in the grueling-yet-fun experience of building a log cabin, I would also seek out "How to Build Your Home in the Woods" by Bradford Angier, as well as "Building a Log Cabin From Scratch" by Dan Ramsey. Each of these would help round out your education and the latter is the most modern and complete of these.

NOTE: Be prepared for HARD WORK over several months. This is not something to be attempted by lazy people!

Not impressed at all

I paid less than $3 plus shipping for a used copy of this book and it was not worth it. It is so sketchy in its instruction that it is less than useless. It advertises itself as a guide to building a cabin with nothing but hand tools and the trees on property and then instructs you to get a contractor, use cement, milled lumber, nails, etc. For instance, when it discusses chimney construction, it instructs you to hire a mason. There is no real instruction in the use of the arcane hand tools, such as an adz, broad axe, or froe. If you are a neophyte, this is not the book for you. It is a poor introduction to the subject. In fact, I can't imagine anyone who would benefit from this book. Foxfire volume 1 is a far more comprehensive and instructive guide to cabin building. If you have that book, don't buy this one. I give it two stars because some of the instructions concerning furnishings, the second half of this "pamphlet" (it's pretty short), are useful. However, you can find all of them in different editions of Foxfire so if you have the set, don't bother with this book.

A C.S. Lewis "Hidden Treasure"

This is a far cry from anything else C.S. Lewis wrote, including the Narnia Stories. And I found it remarkable that he really does "hold his own" even in this Science Fiction Genre! If you haven't read these stories yet, you are in for a treat. They are enjoyable, fantastic, joyful and sometimes even frightening. "Jack" at his most outlandish best!

Early high school is a good time to discover them

These 3 books are some of my all-time favorites--worthy of being read every 7-10 years minimum. As life goes on and the reader matures, new treasures are uncovered with each reading. Early high school is a good time to discover them, and my 9th and 10th graders are reading all 3 this year. I replaced my worn out paperbacks with this single volume and am pleased with the new format. Also pleased with the good value. Caveat: The paper is thick, which makes the book even bigger than it might have been. Individual paperbacks may be preferable for reading away from home or at school.

David Linvingstone takes us on a journey through her life from the very beginning to when this book was published. He has one of the best pictures of Anne Murray and her Family that you will never see anywhere else. It is a book you will never forget, and documented reveiw on a woman the world have loved since the beginning of time.

Sequencing: 128 photos are divided into 17 four-step and 10 six-step functional sequences familiar to everyday life. Six stimulus items are presented on the back of the first card in each set.
