About the Author

John Lenahan is a popular TV magician who became the first person in 85 years to be expelled from the Magic Circle. He has had a prime time BBC1 TV show called ‘Secrets Of Magic’ and also a BBC2 series ‘Stuff The White Rabbit’. He was the voice of the toaster in ‘Red Dwarf’ and has made guest appearances on numerous variety shows. He has toured with Jack Dee, Lenny Henry and Victoria Wood. I first discovered the Shadowmagic books through Librivox where I was able to listen to this wonderful author narrate his own books. It was awesome :) I loved how the books were written, how they were told by Conor as if he were having a conversation with you instead of writing things down to be remembered later. I fell in love with the books but there was a problem. Only the first two books were available on Librivox. I had to find out what happened!!!! I was so pleased that all 3 books were sold as a set and I have not been able to put them down for the past three days :) It's fun, heartfelt, dreamy, actiony, and has the awesomeness of a dragon who won't be used as a taxi, and a mermaids who falls in love with a non-speaking Imp. I love it :D I highly recommend these books to anyone who likes a good story :)

loved it, and waited for the second and third ...

My family just loves these books. It is not the typical genre I read but I picked up the first book when it came out, loved it, and waited for the second and third to come out and bought them right away upon their release. I am currently reading them out loud to my kids (editing the language as I read) and they can't get enough of it. The books are witty and a great adventure from beginning to end. We are currently on book 3 as a family, and my kids will be so sad when the adventure ends.

The Shadow Magic Trilogy by John Lenahan is a fantastic book.
I have at least 6 people in my life that I am sure will enjoy this fantasy.
You are never too old to read this book. It would be a great "family read'.
You'll laugh and gasp out loud. I actually cannot wait for the movie.
This trio of books have a great premise, Irish lore, teenage and familial drama, action, emotional clout and it is FUNNY.
John captures teenage reactions and asides, perfectly.
The proper English spelling in this book took me even further away from my personal reality. Obviously I loved this magical book.

Masterpiece

A small town is nearly drown by continuous heavy rain. Once before it was some kind of resort, a decent sunny place to get away from it all. But not now. Viktor Banev, who is a popular writer, poet and bard, is sent to exile to his rainy native town after having a dispute on "cultural matter" with the president of the country, who long ago was a hero of some sort of liberation war, but now he is just an old, arrogant, corrupted, authoritarian ruler. Banev is a product of his time. He adores bohemian live style. He drinks heavily, he is prone to overeating delicious food, likes women. However he has strong objection to injustice, lie, oppressions.
He arrives at his dismal native town only to find out that the place has become some sort of stage for eery, disturbing events. The children of the town no longer belong to their parents. They don't want to have anything in common with them. They have become frighteningly smarter. At the age of 12 they already read and understood most complicated books on philosophy, mathematics, ethics, physics.
The old good citizens blame the Leprosorium and its inhabitants for all their disasters. Many scientist and just prominent people, who happened to visit the town at some point in the past, all of the sudden became infected by an unknown decease, which resembles lepra, and then they got confined behind the walls of the Leprosorium. Soon afterwards the Rain began and children became strangers to their own mothers and fathers because the sick people from the Leprosorium taught them something preparing them for a new life. Now army, secret services and many dark forces are involved trying haplessly to understand what's going on and to control it.
Banev himself has a teenage daughter, born in unhappy, ruined marriage, and he doesn't know how to deal with her now. He hates the country he lives in but unable to get rid of his own wicked habits. He doesn't know if what's happening to the children is bad or good.
This book is about the conflict between the old and the new, about evolution and progress. It vividly describes the decadent world of ancient superstitions, hatred, intolerance and other people's sins and suggests a new wave, which overcomes all these in one unexpected powerful sweep. The central character of Viktor Banev strives to resolve his inner conflict. Being lethally corrupted by the old world he grew up in, he clearly understands the need for the changes but sees no place for himself in it.
One of the most prominent and profound books, yet neglected, written by Strugatskii bros, which can be compared to theirs "The Roadside Picnic" and "It's hard to be a God."

A Soft Apocalypse

I'm a fan of many types of speculative fiction and, one of the most interesting, is science fiction that came out of the Soviet Union during the U.S./Soviet cold-war-era. Two real masters in this period were the brothers Akady and Boris Strugatsky. Science fiction was sometimes the only way writers could slip something past the censors - the subtext is always worth closer scrutiny in these books.

My favorite book of the Strugatsky brothers, The Ugly Swans, is not their most well-known but, every time I re-read it, I walk away with a new, valid insight into human nature and how it interacts with inherited Culture within the confines of imposed Government. No, really. :)

On the surface, the story concerns what may be a new race of humans evolving beneath our very noses but shunned as if they were lepers as they are seemingly victims of a chronic malaise. For most people, these "Slimies" as they are called are out-of-sight/out-of-mind. While most adults take no notice of these "poor souls", the children however are attracted to them and begin to learn from them just how flawed all the driving factors of the adults actually are. At some point these children, who have become all too bright, have no use for the adults anymore with their passion-driven actions, their hubris and ignorance. The children hold no hate for these flawed, very human adults, only pity - for they are merely slaves to their desires, fears, hopes and lust for power, only partly tempered by their intellect.

The Ugly Swans is a strange cautionary tale of a slow, subversive change from within that may end up being an unexpected kind of cultural as well as physical evolution. It's an ambiguous change, neither malignant nor uplifting in any usual sense and the reader is left to ponder much of this out alone.

If you can dig up this beautiful novel in the back of some dusty bookshop, its well worth the effort. The style is a little odd as the authors' voices have to shine through the lens of translation but fortunately you can hear the brothers loud and clear. While Russian idiom and some of the sentence structure is a little alien, even in translation, to me these quirks are both attractive and novel at the same time. The characters are all deeply envisioned as three-dimensional people by means of a sympathetic omniscience I found refreshing. There are more interesting things at play here in the subtle ways writers of this era found to talk about freedom of speech, or the lack thereof , in an environment where all media is controlled by the government to quash subversive or dissenting voices. Even the title is redolent with multiple meanings and I always grin at its humor. You can even hear echoes of Clarke's "Childhood's End" here, though it's a very different approach viewed through the eyes of a very different culture - much more subtle and subversive is this memorable "Soft Apocalypse".

Subversive, twisted and dark. One of the victories of between the lines literature of the late soviet union. The Strugatsky brothers were masters of wrapping social critique in sci-fi in order to get it past the censors. Highly recommended, see also Roadside Picnic (the world that allowed Tarkovsky to create his masterpiece, Stalker) and Monday Begins on Saturday.

Anyone who is interested in John Harrison would be proud to have a book of this caliber. Not only do we have Dava's wonderful retelling of the challenges that he faced, but her collaboration with William J.H. Andrewes in the production of this illustrated edition has indeed produced a work of art, in every sense of the word. In addition, this book includes the autographs of both authors, which makes it unique indeed! This is a treasure, and well worth the price.

Great Piece of Fiction. Period.

From the first few pages, I was drawn into the world of this book. There's a brief prologue, then the reader is swept back into the past. The highly charged and uber-emotional culture of fledgling adults with one foot in the door of adulthood was compelling to me.

The Best Thing I Never Had features a "gang" of friends at university, tightly knit as a group but struggling to find individual identities. Most of the characters rely heavily on the safety of the home base, and face highly ambivalent feelings as they push out of the comfort zone of the group's approval. This set-up allows the author to draw the players well. As in a comedy of manners, they are bound by their culture but have their own motivations.

Before I comment on the plot, let me say that I was initially wary as multiple characters were introduced. I've recently had the experience of finishing a few books after which I couldn't delineate one character from another, or remember their names, or characteristics. Not so with this book, which to me is a triumph on the part of a debut author. I can recall physical traits, flaws, and backgrounds about the guys who room together in the boys' house and the girls who room together in the girls' house, down to what they drink and what they study.

As a woman who lived through this phase of life, I found the friendships of the girls (women, really, but barely) the most poignant. The central focus of all the emotion is the bond between Harriet and Leigha, best friends with wildly different styles who compete for the same guy. Each wants what she wants, each wants to retain the love of the other, and each is resolute in the feeling that she is right and morally justified in her actions and judgements. This makes for rich story fodder as the surrounding characters align and take sides, and hold the two accountable from the up-close sidelines. This is no simplistic YA or Chick Lit book. I even hesitate to categorize it as Women's Fiction or Romance. It's just fiction and good fiction at that.

Surrounding Harriet and Leigha are Nicky and Miles. They are the "adult" couple; Miles is slightly older than the rest, and has his eye on the prize of earning a PhD and having a real job. Nicky, his girlfriend, is a peacemaker. She doesn't like to rock the boat or see it rocked. Johnny is a simple, sweet, lovestruck lad who falls for Leigha's practiced charm. While I wanted to shake him and tell him to move on, I also pitied him. One's late teens and early twenties are a time for foolish love, and advising someone that he or she could do better is a useless pursuit. He finds his feet, but after considerable heartache. Next up: Sukie. She's sharp and no-nonsense with a strong tie to her family. She faces her own troubles, but I blame her because her alliance with one of the key girls heightens the tension and bad feelings in the group. She seems grounded, but she goes for the drama — like many young women of this age do without realizing the impact of their words and actions. Adam is the object of the main girls attention. He softens as the story progresses, and I remember the appeal of that type of casual and confident young man. Still, he is as laddish as they come, and doesn't think through the consequences of his choices.

Reading the first section of this book was like living it, and I felt all of the push and pull right along with the characters. I experienced all of it with a kind of dread. Like the young, inexperienced characters, I didn't know if things would work out of if anyone would find relief, freedom, and happiness. Again, well done on the part of the author. It was anything but simplistic.

The story jumps forward to the present day (what one could call the 3rd section), and the reader has the benefit of hindsight. The parts surrounding the wedding, and watching the characters reestablish their relationships was rewarding. I liked seeing their growth, and looking through their eyes once they'd had the benefit of some life experience. As with any good novel, I'm left wondering what the characters are up to now.

I think this book is part of a juicy new movement in the "ghetto" that used to be called various names such as Women's Fiction, Chick Lit, Romance, etc. This book, like so many others I've enjoyed, is just a good book with its finger on the pulse of realistic fiction that appeals to women (who are the biggest purchasers of books) but could be read and enjoyed by men.

This book is worth your time. Period.

Clever but the sample does not do the book justice by any stretch...!

There is no way I would have read/purchased this book had it not been by recommendation. I am glad I soldiered on! At the beginning my head was spinning with the number of characters and amount of pieces I had to lay out to try and gather what was going on. Somewhere around 30% I was enjoying it and by 50 % I was commending the Authors talents. I was mentally popping this book on my 'top ten' for the year and my 'clever writing' shelves.
However... I have to retract both praises. Don't get me wrong, it was fantastic, but I was so sure the ending would be dealt with well. The many threads (and a few timelines) that had been woven through the bulk of the story was so clever and well done that I was excited to see how the Author would deal with the ending. I don't need happy glossy endings, I don't do predictable. This was not predictable nor sad, but I felt it did not do the story justice. Such a phenomenal story deserved a better conclusion. I also felt there was some unresolved or unclear meanings. The three birds?
Would I recommend this story? For sure!
Do I like this Authors work? I would read ANYTHING by this Author!

A DELIGHT TO READ, ONE TO REMEMBER FOREVER.

I think I just read the perfect love story!

There is nothing I can say that would describe the sheer beauty of the writing, the imagery and the delightful protagonists - you need to read it for yourself. Keep a box of tissues and some chocolates handy...

The pace is fairly slow but that is acceptable in this novel, because Ms North takes time to show the reader great depth in characterisation of all the cast, including the children - even the dog who is a very special service animal. The storyline is uncluttered with drama - thank goodness - and devoid of contrary women who take umbrage (love that word!) at the slightest hint of things not going their way. The sexual events are not overdone and what there is, is tasteful. I found no jarring notes in the script, nor in the plot.

Imagery in modern novels tends to be overlooked, but in this work, the beauty of both Canada and rural England become part of the story, not "just" background to the main events.

Lindsey Kelk FUN!!!!

Angela is really in her element when it comes to Christmas. However, it does not turn out the way she planned it.

Louisa turns up unexpected, her parents want to visit over Christmas and Alex finally wants to settle down. He buys them a house, so the stress already starts with having to move in Christmas time, and how are they going to move the Christmas tree?

Louisa has trouble in her married life and tries to escape it. Angela has difficulties to find out why she came to NY and then wants to help Louisa, but she is blocking.
And then there is Jenny of course. The drama between the three girls creates new turns in the story all the times. They have such different personalities and that’s not always a good thing. However, in the end I really admired their friendship.

Alex and Angela have some real troubles and fights in this book. He really wants to have a baby, but she doesn’t and there is more…
I still don’t like Angela not telling him everything. They way they take after everything is so adorable though and again I love Alex being so caring and cute. He exactly knows how to treat Angela and only wants the best for her.

This story is full of drama, a lot of funny incidents and Christmas of course. The book really got my into the festive mood. Lindsey’s writing is so sparkling and dynamic.

Amazing Christmas Story - Must Read!

It's been far too long since I have read a Lindsey Kelk book! My return to her work, I Heart Christmas, did not disappoint! What a fun read to finish my holiday books.
Angela has always been one of my beloved characters. I loved her in I Heart New York, I Heart Vegas just to name a few.
This poor British girl can never seem to keep herself away from drama or out of some sort of trouble! I thought once she married Alex maybe she would settle into life and things would run more smoothly, BOY WAS I WRONG!
Angela is hoping to have the best Christmas ever in Brooklyn - but that may not be in the cards this season!
The tree was a little bit of a surprise, she has had several surprise guests and Alex has surprised her as well.
And what word has Alex brought up? The B word! You guessed it! BABY! He is ready to go, but what about poor Angela?
There are twists and turns around each corner and you will love our beloved characters that join us in this fun Christmas tale - Jenny Lopez, Louisa, Alex, James and many more (oh and did I mention an evil character from her past may return, MY LIPS ARE SEALED)!
Grab a bottle of wine, sit back and enjoy this wild and crazy ride! Lindsey does not disappoint!
