Lush, completely imaginative fantasy-adventure
By EA Solinas
Possibly one of the greatest fantasy adventures of our times, Garth Nix's first novel is a lush, magical, dark-witty adventure about a young woman's battle with the hideous Dead.
The story starts with a flashback in which a special necromancer named Abhorsen saves his baby daughter Sabriel from a creature called Kerrigor, in the spiritual river of death. Many years later, at an English-esque boarding school, Sabriel must take up her father's magical sword and bells and try to find out what has happened to him. To do so, she must leave her relatively high-tech home for the Old Kingdom, where magic rules and evil things are stalking her.
Along the way, she is accompanied by the guard Touchstone and the menacing/funny cat-spirit Mogget. They must try to defeat the evil Kerrigor, who wants to blast the Charter which keeps all things from descending into evil.
Sabriel is the best fantasy hero I've read about since Lord of the Rings. Too many fantasy heroines are either damsels or warrior women--Sabriel is neither. She acts and thinks precisely like a young woman in her position. Strong, intriguing, and no slack with a sword in a bad situation, she is a wonderful role model.
Touchstone is a darling, but Mogget really is unique. Is he evil? Good? Or some peculiar mix? This ancient spirit forced to live as a cat is enslaved to the Abhorsen family for the good of everyone (we get a glimpse of how dangerous he is). The world that Garth Nix dreamed up, a mixture of Tolkien and WW2 England, is unparalleled in the fantasy genre. It's populated by animated ghouls, ghastly Mordicants, the almost-human sendings, Charter ghosts, the inhabitants of the river of Death, where only Abhorsens go, and so on...
His writing style is lush and hypnotic--you can actually see the events unfolding in front of your eyes, in this wintry but inviting world.
Thankfully, Mr. Nix appears to be writing a pair of sequels--I can hardly wait. Anyone else think this should be made into a movie?

Overall great with some minor issues
By Kristijan Sašilo
Some spoliers ahead

Well, I'm glad I've put up writing the review for book 1 before I passed the 50% mark of the book 2. :) Why? Simply because book 1 alone had, for me at least, some elements that didn't quite click, but I decided to Elsa it and move on to the second book. And I'm glad I did.

So what bothered me in book 1? Not much, to be honest. But the stuff that did bother me threaten to make a decision for me not to buy the second book. First thing, Sabriel. From a schoolgirl to a stoic badass in a blink of an eye. There are some doubts in her, here and there, some "oh, dear, why me?" moments, but overall she seems to be taking her new role in life quite without any difficulties. Not to mention mastering every new situation without any obvious effort. There are solutions to her seemingly unsolvable problems just popping up all around her. And that leads me to the second minus I discovered, and that's the technicalities.

When I'm reading fantasy novels, I'm judging the author's proficiency by the way they handle the technical matters of their worlds. Either the mechanics of their worlds aren't important that much for the storyline, or mechanics are an integral part and should be explained. For example, we have Harry Potter and the world of UK magic in which it is not THAT important how the wands work. They are using magic in same fashion as the muggles use electricity - who cares where it comes from and how it's made. And only later, when needed, Rowling stepped into the mechanics of the wands and explained how they worked.

Here, on the other hand, we have a world where, from the start, it is obvious that every single thing can be magical, has a name (rod of that, stairs of this, the great branch of whatever, deep lake of whocares etc...), and does something. From the start we are faces with a lot of magical objects and places and their properties are thrown at the reader all at once, without any explanation, or any deeper explanation. I have spent the first half of the book trying desperately to memorise which bell does what, what the hell is Charter and the stones... Perhaps it's just me, but I LOVE fantasy novels where authors explain the mechanics of their world. Here this wasn't the case. Eventually I just gave up and continued on, hoping that things will be resloved in the book 2. And they did, fortunately. So, if you start with book 1 be prepared for almost "deus ex" magical solutions on every other page. And every bloody thing has a name and is important (this esspecially goes for book 2 and the beginning of it) somehow. But please, authors, if the place or an object in fantasy novels isn't important for the storyline don't name it and don't make it a Thing. There were moments when I felt like I was in a Winx episode. You know the cartoon, every episode features someting along this: "Oh, we have to climb the Stars of Tomorrow, to grab the Stick of Remembrance, to force Ultrimatrionix to surrender the Gem of Lightning so that we could vanquish the Cold Maiden of Yesterday who will give us the Key of Truth and finally peace will be restored to Alalilavia and The Flow will flow and Gronix will be able to return from Sittixises..." And you try desperaterly to catch all that, only to realise that it's not important at all, but it's too late...

So, fortunately, everything else about the book 1 was great, I enjoyed the premise and where it was going, and book 2 helped a lot to form my opinion of the book 1, hence four stars. The above complaints weren't such a big deal for me, more of an slight annoyance. I have only three options when rating and judging books: hate it, like it, LOVE IT. And I like this one :D I'll probably love the second one :D

The first book in Brilliant series by the talented Garth Nix
By Dan S. Tong
Sabriel is the first book in the brilliant Old Kingdom series and draws you in with it's creative use of exotic names and world building. The writing is splendid and evokes chills in this reader, and it is easy to imagine this story would be amazing on the big screen if directed by someone truly talented such as Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, etc). The times that Abhorsen or Sabriel struggle against the currents of water passing through the gates of death are especially horrifying, and so brilliantly painted by Nix that, I for one will always see, feel and hear the struggles and the peal of the bells as described in these passages.

This book and the sequels in this series are really unique and highly recommended reading, as are all the books written by Garth Nix.
Don't let any of the negative reviews dissuade you from reading any of them.

SS-GB, by Len Deighton

In February 1941 British Command surrendered to the Nazis. Churchill has been executed, the King is in the Tower and the SS are in Whitehall...For nine months Britain has been occupied - a blitzed, depressed and dingy country. However, it's 'business as usual' at Scotland Yard run by the SS when Detective Inspector Archer is assigned to a routine murder case. Life must go on. But when SS Standartenfuhrer Huth arrives from Berlin with orders from the great Himmler himself to supervise the investigation, the resourceful Archer finds himself caught up in a high level, all action, espionage battle. This is a spy story quite different from any other. Only Deighton, with his flair for historical research and his narrative genius, could have written it.

Review
'A brilliant picture of Britain under German rule' Sunday Telegraph 'One of Deighton's best. Apart from his virtues as a storyteller, his passion for researching his backgrounds gives his work a remarkable factual authority. With Bomber and Fighter he established himself as an expert on a period... the authority of these books seem absolute.' The Observer 'Len Deighton is the Flaubert of the contemporary thriller writers... there can be little doubt that this is much the way things would have turned out if the Germans had won the war.' Michael Howard, Times Literary Supplement 'Deighton is a tremendous weaver of tales... action is all, and splendidly done.' 'A master of fictional espionage.' Daily Mail 'The poet of the spy story.' Sunday Times 'For sheer readability he has no peer' The Standard

An interesting 'what if... tale'
By Mrs S M Fox
'SS-GB' is now over 20 years old, but the story doesn't date, and it's worth reading especially if you've also read Robert Harris's 'Fatherland' as both speculate on a life post-1945, with Britain invaded by Nazis and the Third Reich well established throughout Europe. Good detective stories with unusual settings are rare, and both authors have meticulously researched the period, arriving at a scenario which is chillingly plausible. Deighton has the edge in showing how well the British class system would accommodate the Nazi bureaucracy, and his portrait of collaborators and those forced - by dint of their occupation - to work with the new masters is sensitive, exploring uncomfortable moral questions.

As our world might have been and perhaps nearly was
By Roger J. Buffington
SS-GB is a gripping, tough, and imaginative novel about our world as it might have been. At the opening of the novel, Great Britain has fallen to the German invaders, its army defeated, its cause lost. The novel centers on Scotland Yard, which is now commanded by a German Police General, who is in a power struggle with Himmler's SS. The main protagonist is Inspector Douglas Archer, Britain's top crime-busting homicide detective. Archer is ambiguous about the Germans, and this ambiguity makes Archer a complex and fascinating character, who gets caught up in plots-within-plots involving German infighting, American plans, and British conflicted hopes for either liberation or a more tolerable existence under the Germans.

SS-GB has an amazing gothic feel to it, a distinct nightmarish flavor that is hard to describe. The reader never doubts that this is how things might have been had Hitler gone through with the invasion of Britain. But this is far from a predictable story. No spoilers here, but the ending will rock any reader.

This one is one of Deighton's very best novels and no Deighton fan should miss it. RJB.

Kind of like mashed potatoes - in a good way
By Lady Minstrel
Eddings is one of my "comfort" books. His style makes you feel warm and fuzzy, there's nothing much you need to worry about, and it's great light or bedtime reading. I have noticed that the reviews here are quite polar. People seem to love it or hate it. I'm in the very-fond-of-it section. I do see why people have complaints with it, though. It is similar to the Elenium, with different races and characters subsituted in. Personally, I like the Elenium better but Tamuli is still good fun.
For the record, I don't believe that a book needs to be dark, complex or even make you think too hard in order for it to be labelled a success. Perhaps a writer like George R. R. Martin might produce a more complex plot and more realistic adventures, please understand that this is a matter of style. While I do appreciate that Martin's books are of a more detailed and possibly more thought-out nature, it is still Eddings that I read more. This is for the simple reason that Eddings is fun, funny and easy to read. It doesn't depress and it's quite catchy.
I recommend the Tamuli series if you enjoyed the Elenium. (I haven't read the Belgariad/Mallorean yet). If you found the Elenium tedious, I suggest that you probably not enjoy the Tamuli.
However, Eddings does rate 4 stars for me because it is such a readable book. I find the characters are chasrismatic, even though they might be slightly two-dimensional. There are, however, separate characteristics for separate characters, if you care to look. Even if they become slightly blurred (they start to resemble each other) in the Tamuli, that's not enough for me to despair over the series. While the Tamuli does rely on the success of the Elenium, it is an excellent series by itself. In fact, I accidently read it before the Elenium, and I still loved it.

One of the best books out there today!
By A Customer
The Shining Ones by David Eddings is a New York Times best seller published by Del Ray Fantasy. This book is about a Padion Knight named Sparhawk who travels all over his world with his loyal companions. His traveling companions consist of the child goddess Aphrael, Queen Ehlana, Talen a young knight (a thief in his own time), Sephrenia (a Sytric Socceress), Khalad (Sparhawk's Squire), Tynian, Ulath, Kalten, Biver (who are all Padion Knights from different orders), and Mirtiai a giantess just to name a few. Oh, and a couple thousand soldiers.
These people must fight many strange creatures such as Trolls, Drawn-Men, and long dead soldiers raised from the grave. They must also learn about the elusive and mysterious "Shining Ones".
Here is a quote from this wonderful book. "That fog's moving straight toward us, and it's bringing the light with it. I don't like the feel of this, Sparhawk," Kalten said, drawing his word.
The glowing fog-bank divided and flowed around the hill upon which they stood. And as it drew near, Sparhawk could make out the shapes of bodes within the blur of light.
Sehrenia shrieked, "Defiled ones! Foul and accursed!" But the lights in the fog never faltered as they continued their glowing, inexorable advance.

Amazon.com Review
Jack Higgins is the Ebola virus of thriller writers: his prose is so contagious that it makes you read along feverishly until the bitter end. Since there's no known cure, you might as well lie back and enjoy his latest attack, a compulsively readable story about an alliance between the New York Mafia and Irish Loyalists to recover 50 million pounds worth of stolen gold bullion from the bottom of the Irish Sea. It pits Sean Dillon, one of Higgins's trademark superheroes, against a variety of villains--none more frightening than a young woman driven mad by hatred.

From Publishers Weekly
Sean Dillon, master of disguise and steady Higgins hero (Angel of Death, etc.), returns for another go against political mayhem in the author's latest action-fest. A 1985 hijacking of gold bullion, masterminded by Irish Protestant terrorist Michael Ryan, ends with the ship that's carrying the booty sinking off Ireland. Ryan and his niece Kathleen flee to America while their presumed henchman, seemingly a sailor but actually a disguised Dillon, then an IRA enforcer, ostensibly returns to sea. Ten years later, Ryan is sprung from an American medical prison by a Mafia lawyer intent on retrieving the bullion. Soon the gold is the object of desire of the mob, a retired IRA chief of staff and British Intelligence, for whom Dillon now works. The cheeky, pint-sized Dillon tends toward occasional stage Irishness, and the other characterizations aren't much deeper, but readers riveted by Higgins's mastery of plot and pace won't mind at all. Winding up with a jaunty noir bounce, this is splendid high pulp-in other words, vintage Higgins. BOMC main selection. (June) ~ FYI: Two Sean Dillon novels, On Dangerous Ground and Eye of the Storm, will air later this year on Showtime as TV movies, starring Rob Lowe as Dillon.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
The fifth Sean Dillon adventure (the last was Angel of Death, LJ 3/1/95) finds the former terrorist involved with a group of Irish Protestant paramilitaries in 1985 as they hijack a truck carrying #100 million in gold bullion. Ten years later, Sean is working for British Intelligence when he is ordered to go after the gold again. Now he is to prevent the bullion from disrupting the peace between the Catholics and Protestants. Dillon, boss Brigadier Ferguson, and partner Hannah Bernstein must also deal with the Mafia. They ask 85-year-old Liam Devlin for help, and the IRA legend of past Higgins books is only too pleased to participate. The excitement never lags as each side double-crosses the others. Sean is too perfect, however, and the surprise ending is not a surprise. Even so, it is fun getting there. Recommended for popular collections.

Old Fashion Yarn - we need more like it on the bookrack
By A Customer
Higgins has been around for so long and has developed an endearing style for spinning tales that can only hook the reader. The types of adventure stories he tells had gone out of style long ago. I lament the passing of those times. For that reason, I often find myself reading material from the 60's and 70's, transporting myself back to a time when geopolitics and detailed knowledge of technical hardware didn't gum down the pace of a good novel. It was a less informed time, but fun, non the less.
Drink with the Devil is a rare novel that transports me back but yet remains refreshingly contemporary! I think that's why I like it so much. Sean Dillon, Higgins's weathered hero, does all the time travelling for me. The novel opens with a gold heist gone awry a decade ago. Fast forward to today and a treasure hunt ensues throughout the rest of the novel.
Mafia, Ulstermen, angry IRA types, and many others find their way into the novel. Like most Higgins fare, the pace is very quick. All subplots, there aren't many, are attended to; Dillon sews up all loose ends, as he usually does.
A fine read. Or, a fine listen. Patrick McNee does the audio version. He relies on his cockney accent to bring realism to the text. Very enjoyable

This book is much deeper than you might think.
By A Customer
In 1985, IRA terrorist Sean Dillon is assigned to infiltrate a renegade Loyalist terrorist group led by Michael Ryan. Posing as a Protestant named Martin Keogh, Dillon saves Ryan's niece Kathleen from rape (and probably worse) at the hands of a group of Catholic thugs. Dillon joins Ryan in his plan to hijack a British armored car carrying 50 million pounds to fund Ryan's campaigns. The heist goes off successfully, but the captain of the boat ferrying them across the Irish Sea tries a double cross, and pays with his life. Dillon and the Ryans survive, with Michael maintaining an electronic device which will lead the user to the wreck and the money. Dillon has an opportunity to kill the Ryans and take the device, but (perhaps in his first pangs of conscience) chooses not to, and they go on their separate ways.
Ten years later, Michael and Kathleen Ryan have immigrated to the U.S., where Michael is imprisoned for shooting a police officer in a botched robbery. Michael's health is failing, so he is often transported from the prison to a nearby hospital for treatment. One of the henchmen of Mafia Don Antonio Russo gets wind that Ryan knows the location of (now) 100 million pounds sitting at the bottom of the Irish Sea. Russo confers with IRA chieftain Jack Barry (the man who assigned Dillon to infiltrate Ryan's group) and offers to split the booty. Russo will break Ryan out of prison in exchange for the location of the wreck. The Ryan's are thus forced into assisting the IRA and the mob.
Stalwart British Intelligence guru Brigadier Charles Ferguson gets wind of Ryan's resurfacing and sends Detective Chief-Inspector Hannah Bernstein and Dillon, who's now working for British Intelligence (read "Thunder Point" if you want to know why,) after the gold, to stop it from falling into the hands of either the IRA, the mob, or the Ryans.
Another Dillon classic, with the added bonus of shedding some light on what Dillon did when he was with the IRA. Kathleen Ryan is easily the most compelling character in the book. At the end of the book, when you find out what has happened to her in her short life, it makes her actions that much more tragic and also much more understandable. I defy you not to feel for her when her trauma is finally revealed. One wonders how many real Kathleen Ryans there are in Northern Ireland today, both Protestant and Catholic, and if they'll ever manage to find peace.
If you like Higgins, and especially Dillon, buy this book. But it's a lot deeper, and raises a lot more questions, than most people are willing to admit.

It will just come down to my limited memory and also what I think will look the best in my artistic abilities
By Amazon Customer
On the third day of the sixth month in the year of 2016 at around 10:15 AM The Chronicles of Narnia Coloring Book was delivered to my address and I am thrilled but the only small problem is that I am not sure of what colors to use in each drawing. It has been many years since I saw the animated movies or even the live versions that were made. It will just come down to my limited memory and also what I think will look the best in my artistic abilities. This could be a brand new look for what C. S. Lewis had in mind for the art for a story written so many years ago. One thing that has always fascinated me that when these books were being written right along with Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. There were three authors that got together at a local pub while writing there books. C.S. Lewis, Tolkien and one other but I can't remember the name.

Review

‘Iron kings and strangled queens, battles and betrayals, lies and lust, the curse of the Templars, the doom of a great dynasty – and all of it (well, most of it) straight from the pages of history, and believe me, the Starks and the Lannisters have nothing on the Capets and Plantagenets. Whether you are a history buff or a fantasy fan, Druon's epic will keep you turning pages. This was the original game of thrones’ George R.R. Martin

‘Blood-curdling tale of intrigue, murder, corruption and sexual passion’ The Sunday Times

‘Dramatic and colourful as a Dumas romance but stiffened by historical accuracy and political insight’ The Sunday Times

‘Barbaric, sensual, teeming with life, based in wide reading and sound scholarship…among the best historical novels’ The Times Literary Supplement

A savory bouillabaisse of intrigue and power politics
By Laurence R. Bachmann
Maurice Druon is something close to an HF miracle. He attends not only to the detail of the period, but the minutiae as well. Who else would bother to dust off Clovic custom and explain the implausibility of trumped up Salic Law? Or rummage through 14th century Reims bursar records to determine the number of dishes to be used and livestock to be slaughtered during the three day coronation festivities that crowned Phillipe the Long? Many might have the patience, but few the talent to make it all so fantastically engaging. In this, the third of the Accursed Kings series, there is marvelous attention both power grabs and to pomp and circumstances Most importantly though Droun is a keen student of human motivation and psychology--specifically the greed and ambition that motivate the powerful.

Indeed, in 14th century France even the highest born aren't high enough to suit their sense entitlement. Everyone seems to believe the world would be a much better place if they moved up a rung or two, and oh, yes....if their enemies were disposed of post haste by any means. All of the above are the ingredients that spice up this splendid story of Phillip the Fair's ill-fated offspring. Characters like the Comtesse d'Artois are delicious sociopaths. Minor characters in the story like pieces on a real life chess board were the least powerful are dross to protect a king's most valued pieces. And there are wonderful, delightful chapters that imagine the election of Pope John XXII (the pope who didn't believe in hell). Droun's brilliant narrative is surely what folks mean when they say fiction is more true than biography.

If you are unfamiliar with the series, become acquainted as soon as possible. It's the best historical fiction since Robert Graves's I Claudius, and Claudius the God. This is HF that is both meaty and savory. Enjoy!

The Royal Succession (The Accursed Kings)
By robert seth jucovy
Druon's series "The Accursed Kings" in well written and fun to read with a jaundiced view of the great and powerful during the period in which the series is set. It does take some liberties with possible hidden actions and incidents behind the documented history of the times portrayed but as far as I can tell from the perspective of a somewhat serious student of the period the series is, with the exception of one or two factual slips, quite accurate in following and effectively incorporating documented information.

"The Royal Succession" cover the period from the death of Louis X to the succession of his brother Philippe to the throne of France as Phillipe V. Phillipe was the one capable son of Philip IV and is an interesting figure in his own right. Other significant and well portrayed characters in the book include Mahut of Artois and her great enemy Robert of Artois as well as Cardinal Jacques Deuze the future Pope John XXII. The politics of the French Succession are at the core of the book when in 1316, King John I the Posthumous died and the female claimants to the succession were passed over in favor of Phillipe, the uncle of John I. This legally doubtful decision which was later described by French jurists as an appropriate enforcement of the long-defunct Salic law was to be a supreme example of the law of unintended consequences as it led to the succession of the Valois kings and the beginning of the Hundred Years War. The politics of the papal succession provide a counterpoint with the conclave that elected Pope John XXII.

The Royal Succession (The Accursed Kings, Book 4)
By Elspeth G. Perkin
The Royal Succession (The Accursed Kings, Book 4) is another brilliant example of superb writing that to this reader is the pinnacle of historical fiction and literary entertainment. This series takes my breath away every time I open the pages on another reign of the House of Capet and needless to say The Royal Succession did not disappoint. The Royal Succession is the fourth installment of The Accursed Kings series and enfolds history and vivid descriptions of French chronicles to create a harrowing saga of intrigue, destiny, murder, revenge and loss of innocence. Each novel continues the saga of the previous installment and I would strongly encourage those interested to please read the previous three novels (The Iron King, The Strangled Queen and The Poisoned Crown) before attempting The Royal Succession; however each novel does contain a review of previous novels and events so the decision is yours to make.

This novel's timeline only spans from June 1316 to January 9 1317 and follows the absence of a sovereign, the anticipated birth of a posthumous heir and detached manoeuvres of church and court. What transpires behind the empty throne is a succession of events that will ultimately throw the country of France and England into a bloody struggle for power. In The Royal Succession more imaginative drama is presented to the reader than the previous novels, history of course is kept in mind and follows events as close as possible but shocking counterplots are sure to keep readers up late trying to guess what will happen next. I highly recommend The Royal Succession and The Accursed Kings series to those who have a passion for history and a desire to discover a refined collection of novels that are sure to amuse and haunt the reader.

Tour Climbs: The Complete Guide to Every Mountain Stage on the Tour de France, by Chris Sidwells

The first book to cover in detail every major climb ever used in the Tour de France, including detail on the actual route (with maps and profile), length, height, list of winners and route descriptions of how to emulate the King of the Mountains and get from the bottom to the top. Every year the Tour de France is said to only really start when it reaches the first mountain stages: the drama of the race only really begins as the climbers take over in the Pyrenees, Vosges or Alps. The Tour is also the most famous classic in cycling and draws huge audiences to the TV and internet coverage (the official web site holds the world record for number of hits excluding search engines). But the route of the Tour is not just for professionals. A growing number of people now take their bikes and actually do a stage of the Tour (the Etap - for amateurs, which this year attracted 8,000 people to climb one of the hardest mountain stages in the Tour) or spend a week doing some of the more notorious climbs (Ventoux - where Tommy Simpson died in the 50s). This book is for everyone who watches the Tour and has even the slightest of an inkling that they'd like to do at least one of the climbs. Packed with information on each climb, this is the ultimate guide to the Tour climbs, which will remain important for many years to come (the Tour only uses a set number of climbs, which they return to every couple of years). Contents - Eastern Pyrenees, Central Pyrenees, Western Pyrenees, Vosges & Jura, Massif & Cevennes, Northern Alps, Central Alps and Southern Alps

Not Quite the "Complete Guide"
By Domestique
The potted histories, background notes and the overview of each climb make this a nice book to have, but if you're planning to have a crack at one of the famous ascents you'll need to look elsewhere for the gritty details such as the all important kilometre by kilometre breakdown of the gradients.

There is a good introductory section, then each climb gets it's own well written narrative alongside some nice photographs and sketch maps. Each climb is also given a 1 to 5 star ranking..and I'm afraid it's here that I slightly fall out with the book. How the ranking system works isn't clear from the text but the star grading seems to have been arrived at by some mysterious combination of climb difficulty and climb fame (especially in the English speaking world). The bizarre result of this is that some of the supposedly lowly "3 star" climbs in the Pyrenees are in reality just as brutal, nasty and long as some of the "5 star" climbs in the Alps. Not a big deal when the book stays on the coffee table but it's something which could come as a "leg breaking" shock to the tyro who, having read the book, sets out for a pleasant ride up the likes of the Plateau de Beille!

I'd still rate it as a very good book for the cycling fan, but a bit short of being a "complete guide" for a serious cyclist - nevertheless still worth having on the bookshelf.

An essential travel companion for cyclists visiting France
By David Henley
This book, with its historical anecdotes, route descriptions, photos, and rudimentary maps is a valuable tool for anyone planning to visit France to ride some of the famous climbs on the Tour de France. Of the climbs that I've ridden, I found the route descriptions to be accurate, including the all-important gradients at each stage of the climb. If I could wish for any improvements, I would like to see a much more detailed map for each climb, as well as more photos.

The Vagrant, by Peter Newman

The Vagrant is his name. He has no other.

Years have passed since humanity’s destruction emerged from the Breach.

Friendless and alone he walks across a desolate, war-torn landscape.

As each day passes the world tumbles further into depravity, bent and twisted by the new order, corrupted by the Usurper, the enemy, and his infernal horde.

His purpose is to reach the Shining City, last bastion of the human race, and deliver the only weapon that may make a difference in the ongoing war.

What little hope remains is dying. Abandoned by its leader, The Seven, and its heroes, The Seraph Knights, the last defences of a once great civilisation are crumbling into dust.

But the Shining City is far away and the world is a very dangerous place.

Actions Speak Louder than Words
By TOMunro
I bought this book at a book signing in the UK and am re-posting my review of it from the amazon.co.uk site here.

I note that the price tag on the e-book has put people off and I have no brief to bat for Harper Collins, on that. It does seem a bit steep. But I did enjoy the book and, seeing that a couple of reviews seem to be comments just on the price, I thought I'd add one that was based on having read the book.

At the Grim Gathering, Peter gave a short summary of his book "A one parent family in a post-demonic apocalypse." Look closely at the exquisite cover and you will see the key elements in this tale. A ragged man with a sword in one hand and a baby in the other walking a street of ruined buildings above a title set out in neon lights. Before the first page is turned, the book is challenging expectations.

I did not find it so plot driven as Starborn was. There is a story line, and a back-story line. By the end the latter has converged pleasingly on the former to explain all things that need explaining. But it is the spare writing, and the exoticness of the world building that carried me along.

In some ways it reminded me of the Gunslinger by Stephen King and its iconic mental image of an enigmatic hero on an unexplained journey through a blasted land. This is a world not so much stalked as comprehensively mugged by disaster on an epic scale. On a long walk the protagonist acquires a staggering variety of both allies and enemies.

However, it is more complete and self-contained than the first instalment of the Dark Tower series. At the Grim Gathering, the author said he always had a beginning and an end in mind and a misty patch inbetween where pretty much anything could happen. That overarching certainty guides the Vagrant's footsteps and reassures the reader that there is purpose in the present and resolution in the future.

The world building is broad and imaginative, in that not just one but two worlds are conjured up before the reader. There is the world that was. A world destroyed, the advanced civilisation where ships sailed in the sky and tanks like armoured trains went to war with demons, where knights still wielded swords in harmony and the mysterious power of the Seven, with their great champion Gamma, stood ready and on ceaseless and unchanging watch against invasion from the Breach.

Then there is the world that is. A world infested with entities which enslave the humans from without and within. Creatures of chaos flood north across a now benighted continent. Their power is constrained only by infighting between their factions and the necessity of finding ways to shield themselves from the toxic environment where they have won victory. These demons are unlike any others, creatures of essence and desire, rather than corporeal entities. More an infection than an invasion, they corrupt as much as conquer. A taint stains the land and its people.

My other reference point is a 1981 film Mad Max 2, the (original) road warrior. There is that atmospheric journey through a shattered civilisation in which little islands of humanity strive to eke out some shadow of their former existence. Broken technology is cannibalised by desperate people as the Vagrant travels North past a barren landscape of twisted plastic and metal on a mission both personal and professional.

The people have been crushed by defeat and by taint. Things that were, or could have been human, have been corrupted beyond recognition. But still sparks of humanity and honour reside in the unlikeliest of places and can be kindled anew in a world where there is hope for all, and tears for those that fall.

The story is told in the present tense, even the backstory flashbacks. It is an approach still unusual to my old eyes. However, I saw it done to great effect in "The Girl With All The Gifts," and here - as there - the present tense narrative lends an edgy uncertainty as we follow our hero through a tale augmented with a variety of minor points of view (including a goat's uncomplicated eye).

The writing is unobtrusively good. Like Mark Lawrence's writing, Peter Newman's avoids battering you with purple prose, or savouring its cleverness in convoluted gymnastics of vocabulary. But open a page at random and you will find lines that make you nod in appreciation. "mist leaking in wheezy clouds" "Busy clots of people move about"

The final departure from convention, or perhaps the first is in the protagonist's voice. For Newman has determined that for the Vagrant, actions must perforce, speak louder than words.

enjoyed the journey a great deal
By Sneaky Burrito
This book was just my style. I hate excessive explanation and description and background information, and far too often, fantasy is clogged with these. But here, you're thrown into the middle of events. Things are mentioned in asides about a taint, limb grafts, etc., and at first you're just along for the ride, but enough of these details emerge over time to paint a more complete picture of this book's society. I have heard Mr. Newman's prose compared to Glen Cook's, and I think if you like Glen Cook's writing, you will enjoy this book.

The atmosphere is bleak and the main character, the Vagrant, matches it. He has a singular purpose -- journeying with a baby to a city that has not fallen to the rot and corruption known in the rest of the world. He allows people to join him on his journey, but they don't always make it very far. When they betray him, become dangerous to him and/or the baby, are not strong enough to go on, or cannot be saved without sacrificing himself, he kills them or allows them to be killed. He is absolutely not trusting when it comes to the baby's welfare.

At the first instance of a relatively innocent person dying, I was taken aback. But just because the Vagrant allowed this to happen, doesn't mean it is easy for him. And, as the book goes on, we learn some of what led him to be this way (through a series of flashbacks). Further, there is a kind of honor in at least some of his actions that you come to appreciate as you approach the end of the book.

One thing that I have not mentioned yet is that the Vagrant is mute. You might think that this would make for an uninteresting book, but quite the opposite is true. When he is traveling with the baby, there is no need for speech. However, the Vagrant's actions speak loudly both in his interactions with the baby and with others. And he does acquire a mouthpiece of sorts as the book goes on. The book still moves along, even without much dialogue, or with one-sided dialogue from other characters.

I was not as happy with the ending -- it seemed anticlimactic after the journey leading up to it. I hesitate to say more because to do so would be to drop some pretty major spoilers. There was also one aspect of the main character I am still puzzled by, but seeing as the world outside of the Vagrant's destination is still pretty messed up, there is definitely room for sequels where perhaps the reason for that aspect will be revealed.

I won't say this type of book hasn't been done before. I can think of a half dozen parallels off the top of my head. But the particular combination of details here kept my interest, I thought the pacing was appropriate, and I liked the terse prose. (I also loved the goat...) I will definitely read more from Peter Newman.

A great tale of a lone knight, a baby, and a goat

A sword-wielding mute, a baby, and a goat cross a post-apocalyptic landscape, heading for the Shining City. But will they reach their destination before the demonic horde on their trail overtakes them?

After reading about this book on Chuck Wendig's blog, I couldn't wait to dig in. However, at the time, Harper Voyager wanted $20 for the e-book. Since everyone knows that's a steaming pile, I held off until I found a new hardcover and I'm quite pleased with my treeware purchase.

The story of the last of the Seraph Knights is quite good, though on the surface doesn't look all that original. At first glance, it reminded me of Jay Posey's Three and Peter Brett's The Warded Man, with heavy doses of The Gunslinger. However, The Vagrant kicked me in the junk.

The way the story unfolds is masterful. You don't notice how much of the text in a lot of novels is dialogue until you come across a book where the three lead characters don't speak. As a result, it seemed like I wasn't making any progress in the book a lot of the time. The reading experience was a rewarding one, though.

Peter Newman's writing was superb and having to infer the Vagrant's nature and motives from his actions elevated the reading experience quite a bit. I never thought I'd get this attached to a nameless baby and a goat. The worldbuilding was interesting, mostly through the dialogue of the characters around the Vagrant and his gang. There were some infodumps in the form of flashbacks but they were easily digestible.

I don't really have anything bad to say about this book. It's a more difficult read than most fantasy books out there but it's also more rewarding. Four out of five stars.
